08.01.2022 Hey lovers it’s been a awesome few days on the road. It’s so good to finally get the van out and hit the train. it’s only been 4 days but we have visited ...some amazing little towns and met some crazy people. This craziness has led us to Lightning Ridge. Now this place is very quirky but unique at the same time. You see things you wouldn’t see anywhere in which makes this place legendary. Right in the middle of town you will find Lightning ridge pies on opal Owner Russell Steadman has had this place for 3 years. Originally from QLD Russell has been working in bakeries since the age of 11 !!!!! Born in Mitchel (western qld) Russell’s family lived right behind the Bakery so at the young age of 11 he hit the owners up for a job and hasn’t looked back. After spending years working and operating bakeries in QLD a opportunity came up for him to move into enemy territory and Lightning Ridge is where he ended up. As I pointed out in one of my recent videos Covid has hit this little community hard. With no travelers and tourists plus council restrictions only allowing 1 person In the bakery at a time, it has been very difficult times. Russell decided to shut the shop for a few weeks and change things around and re-brand. Post Covid and a new problem has popped up !!!! a serious shortage of staff or willing people wanting to work. The travelers are back and demanding ’s but Russell only has himself and another worker Michelle working the shop. So if anyone is looking for work get in touch with Russell !!!! These guys need extra hands ASAP. Anyway enough of the sad stories let’s get down to the review and most importantly choosing a smash. Choosing a was a very quick decision. Michelle insisted I try the Steak Diane . As soon as she mentioned the word Diane I was sold. THE REVIEW 1. Value for Money Every in the joint is $5 !!!! This is bloody great value. They are all decent sized ’s and well worth the prize tag. Plus it’s not very often I’m reviewing a square . 9/10 2. Meat Ratio This bugger was almost filled to the top as photos indicate. Plus the was filled with huge chunks of meat !!!! 8.5/10 3. Meat Flavour For me this was the best part of the by a country mile. Chunky Steak and I mean huge chunks of tender meat. Then add mince, creamy garlic Diane sauce, a little pepper and topped off with Worcestershire sauce. The whole thing was bloody unreal and I absolutely loved it. 10/10 4. Pastry The pastry was really good. Made with butter milk there was plenty of flavor and held together perfectly. The bottom was quite firm while the top had flakes but not the normal I was used to. Russell mentioned there was a reason why his ’s are not super flakey. A huge percentage of his clients are tradies & travelers who eat the ’s on the go and most of the time in their cars. So his tops are created to minimize the spillage that normally happens when you smash into a and the flakes fall everywhere throughout your car. Now that’s looking after your customers !!! Overall this pastry was very good. 9/10 5. Temperature - Almost perfect, while a tad cool for my liking overall very good. The wasn’t going to get any colder cause I smashed it very quickly. 8.5/10 Overall 45/50 This was really really good. Russell must have thought i hadn’t had a feed for a while cause I smashed this thing in record time. The 2 standouts were the flavor and price. This wouldn’t be my normal first choice but man it was good. I’ve gotta mention the sauce again it was a great choice and tasted so good. This was my very first steak Diane Review and hopefully not my last. Apart from bread !!! This place has everything you need and more. The ’s the cakes the coffee’s are amazing. Beware this place does get very very busy so to avoid disappointment get in early. Parking isn’t a problem the main part of town whist can get very busy has heaps of parking available. Huge thanks to Russell for having me on one of his busiest days. The place was so busy yet his was more than willing to take the time to share his story and let run amok in his shop. He’s a ripping fella and I really appreciate his time. Lightning Ridge is one of those places you have to visit once in your lifetime. The whole place is a experience and you will see things and people that will blow your mind. So next time you make travel plans make Lightning Ridge and Lightning Ridge ’s on Opal the top of that list. Trust me you won’t be disappointed. Don’t forget we still have the Gisler ’s mega prize still running !!! That’s right 10 people will be winning a $100 voucher. I cannot thank the Man Jon Gisler enough for his generosity. So keep liking and sharing. The tour rolls into Dubbo next so stay tuned for a few more videos and another review. If you live in any of the towns I’m visiting please do not hesitate to message me and let’s catch up for a at your local. As always stay safe and keep supporting your local businesses #PIES #SUPPORTLOCAL
