25.01.2022 It is essential that all students be prepared for learning every day. One of the easiest things Parents and Carers can do is work with their children each day and check they have the correct equipment. For incoming Year 7 students, there is a specific list of equipment in the Year 6 to 7 Transition Handbook that students have already received - please refer to the picture below. This package of equipment can be purchased from Seaton’s Newsagency who will have all items ready for purchase. For Years 8-12 please refer to the individual list for each year. In relation to scientific calculators, they can be purchased at the school via the office. In addition to this package of equipment, students are expected to bring their laptops every day.

24.01.2022 Ridge Kids can do anything! Georgia Kafer, a former student at Lightning Ridge Central School was featured in an online article during #nationalscienceweek for her outstanding research in the Genome Integrity team for Jeans for Genes Australia. #jeansforgenesaustralia #scienceweek Dr Georgia Kafer is the Senior Research Officer at Children’s Medical Institute, Sydney and a typical day for her is:... In the morning I usually start my day with feeding by stem cells. The stem cells grow in little plastic dishes inside a special cell oven. I feed them by changing the liquid media that they grow in. I must do this every single day (even weekends!) at around the same time. Some days I then have a lab meeting (I have 3 x 2-hour meetings a week with different research teams) where members of the different research teams and myself present our recent data. Everyone provides feedback on how we have interrupted our results and on what we plan to do next. During the day I will do my experiments. Some experiments may take 5 days, while others can be done in a single day. Some examples of the experiments I do include ‘Immunoblotting’ where we run protein samples on a gel and use antibodies to determine how abundant a protein is; ‘Immunofluorescence this experiment requires cells to be stained using antibodies that glow different colours (blue, green, red etc). I use a high-resolution microscope called an Airyscan LSM 880 to visualise the colours in the cells. The colours can give us information about the localization of proteins to different parts of the cell. (The picture of me is me using the Airyscan, and you can see an image of a cell stained with these different colours on the screen). Using the Airyscan we can see things that are very small as small as 0.000014 cm! I usually leave work in the late afternoon. I take the dog for a quick walk before sitting down to do another couple of hours of work at home. This work is usually writing grants to try to win research funding from the government or writing up my experimental results (sometimes writing research articles for publication) or planning out my next series of experiments. Every day is different when you are a scientist and as a scientist, I am lucky in that I get to plan my own days and work schedule around my lifestyle. Thank you Dr Kafer, We look forward to connecting with you again soon. You might see Dr Kafer in this week's Throwback Thursday Picture.. (Hint front row, seated)

13.01.2022 ALERT: ASTHMA AND AEROSOLS Some members of the Lightning Ridge Central School Community suffer severe allergies to aerosol sprays or perfumes that can act as a trigger to an (often) serious asthma attack, or bring on a medical complication in a sensitive individual. The allergy can be sufficiently serious to put staff or students into anaphylactic shock if an aerosol can has been used anywhere in their vicinity. This can be a life threatening situation, resulting in the st...aff member or student being transported to hospital in an ambulance. * Roll-on and stick deodorants are permitted at school. * Aerosols are banned from school premises, excursions, sporting events and all events where students are in confined spaces. * Students are encouraged to follow correct hygiene procedures by applying deodorant at home after showering: a good deodorant will last all day if applied to clean skin before dressing. Let's Help to Create an Asthma Friendly school. This means that everyone needs to be aware of their own: * Right to a safe learning environment. * Responsibility for the health and safety of others in their shared spaces. Remember: No student is to use or bring aerosol deodorants or sprays to school. Teachers have been asked to confiscate any aerosol products found at school and bring them to the Deputy Principal. Parents will be informed that the products have been collected from their son or daughter and that they can call into the school and collect the product. Thank you for considering the health and safety of others.
