24.01.2022 Lava Lamps A classic lava lamp contains a incandescent or halogen lamp which heats a tall (often tapered) glass bottle. The lamp consists of a special coloured wax mixture inside a glass vessel, the remainder of which contains clear or translucent (coloured) liquid. Common wax has a density much lower than that of water, and would float on top under any temperature. However, originally carbon tetrachloride wass added to the wax to make its density at room temperature slightl...y higher than that of the water. When heated, the wax mixture becomes less dense than the water, because the wax expands more than water when both are heated. It also becomes fluid, and blobs of wax ascend to the top of the device where they cool (which increases their density relative to that of the water) and then they descend. A metallic wire coil in the base of the bottle acts as a surface tension breaker to recombine the cooled blobs of wax after they descend. However, lava lamps made in China since 1970 do not use carbon tetrachloride, because its use was banned that year due to toxicity. The manufacturer (Haggerty) stated that their current formulation is a trade secret. The bulb is normally 25 to 40 watts. Generally, it will take 4560 minutes for the wax to warm up enough to form freely rising blobs, when operating the lamp at standard room temperature. It may take as long as 2 to 3 hours if the room is below standard room temperature. Once the wax is molten, the lamp should not be shaken or knocked over or the two fluids may emulsify, and the fluid surrounding the wax blobs will remain cloudy rather than clear. Some recombination will occur as part of the normal cycle of the wax in the container, but the only means to recombine all of the wax is to turn off the lamp and wait a few hours. The wax will settle back down at the bottom, forming one blob once again. Severe cases can require many heat-cool cycles to clear. In 2015, a new design was introduced into the market that uses ferrofluid in place of wax.

23.01.2022 Light colour or Temperature Have you ever noticed how lighting can affect your mood? Natural light can make you feel energised while you feel sleepy when the lighting is dim. Harsh light can make you feel uneasy or romantic candlelight make you relaxed. The reason for this effect is the colour temperature of the lighting. Colour temperature refers to how warm or cool the light provided by a light bulb is . Light therapy studies have found that different light colours affect... moods and heart rates. Different intensities of light cause the body to release different hormones. A high colour temperature triggers the release of Serotonin which effects our mood and energy levels. This is referred to as blue light or a cool temperature and occurs naturally from the sun during the day. If you want to increase productivity and promote a positive environment, short blue wavelengths are the best. A low colour temperature triggers the production and release of Melatonin which causes us to unwind, relax then become sleepy. Low colour temperature is often referred to as warm, red light and occurs naturally at the end of the day. Until recently, the introduction of fluorescent and LED lighting had meant a restriction in light colour with only high colour temperature lighting available in this form. In the last few years however advancements in this technology have been made. LED lighting is now available in a whole range of colour temperatures. Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin and can be anywhere between 1000K and 10000K - with residential and commercial lighting generally falling between 2000K to 6500K. Warm white: between 2000K and 3000K Cool white: between 3100K and 4500K Daylight: between 4600K and 6500K Depending on the brand the reference cool white and day light are often switched around.

21.01.2022 Federation In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Federation-style architecture was a symbol of Australias budding national identity. As architects and builders fused influences from France, Britain, and America, they created a uniquely Australian style less formal than its Victorian predecessors and far better suited to the countrys subtropical climate. Federation interiors drew a great deal from Edwardian Era Interiors. The invention of electricity ushered in a new... era of enlightenment and style. Arms and glass shades could be positioned downwards or on an angle, which was not possible with older gas lighting. The era also saw the rise of table and floor lamps which often featured unique fabric and paneled glass lamp shades suitable for decorative or functional light. Federation lighting is a combination of styles and designs which features fine glass, metal work and castings. See more

20.01.2022 Rustic-yet-urban style reminiscent of old factories and roughly renovated inner-city spaces. The industrial look is not just a metropolitan or urban look. It is for both coasts and everything in between. Industrial chic is a comforting look with deep roots in nostalgia. Rough and rusty metals soothe our modern tensions by reconnecting us to the past while vintage looks remind us of simpler times.
20.01.2022 Lamp Shades Since lampshades and lamp bases are often sold together, we usually don't give much thought to the shades. Yet when you think about it the lampshade will inevitably have as much impact on the room as the base. Lampshades are a valuable opportunity to add to the decorating story of your room through the size, shape and even the colour or pattern of the shade. The Room... Think about the color and style of the room the lamp will be in and decide whether you want it to stand out or blend in with the surroundings or make a statement. The Light How much light do you need and where should it be focused? Dark shades don't usually allow light to filter through while light shades do. If it's a reading lamp you'll want a fairly wide lampshade base so that you get plenty of light. The Bulb You need to make sure that the globe you choose will give the right amount of light for the area required. If it is reading you will need a stronger globe than if for ambient lighting. LED vs Halogen. LED bulbs are now widely used as they have greater energy efficiency and a longer life span. As they produce little or no heat they also do damage the shade and are much safer around children. The Lamp Base Decide if you want to call attention to the base or the shade. If the base is unique or bold use a more subdued lampshade. If the base is very plain and simple you might want to consider a shade with some decorative embellishments or colour. Shape When choosing the right shape you need to consider both the lamp base and the room and position of the lamp. Match the shape of your base and shade square with square, for example for a cohesive look. Rounded lampshades are generally more popular, but one neat advantage that square shades have is that you can place them right up against a wall, so they can be useful if you have limited space for example, on a narrow side table in a hallway. Size This is the tricky part. Some lamps call for shades of unusual sizes, but there are some general rules you can follow. Generally, the height of the shade should be about the height of the base. The bottom of the shade should be wider than the widest part of the base. Keep in mind that these are guidelines only. Occasionally you'll come across a lamp that will call for an oversized shade or even a smaller-than-usual shade. Assess what will look best in your space and then choose the appropriate one. When coming into buy a new Shade often it is better to bring the base into the store so you can try different style, size and colour to find the perfect match.

18.01.2022 Understanding common household light bulb shapes, sizes, and styles is important. Every light bulb has identifying characteristics that are represented by a letter or series of letters and a number; The letter or letters in a bulb code indicate either shape or special features such as reflector type. For every light fixture or application, theres going to be a specific bulb or light bulb shape that will fit best and provide the right type of light. Type of bulb...Continue reading
18.01.2022 LampShades A lampshade is a fixture that covers the light bulb on a lamp to diffuse the light it emits. Usually conical or cylindrical in shape, lampshades can be found on floor, desk, tabletop, or suspended lamps. The term can also apply to the glass hung under many designs of ceiling lamp. Beyond its practical purpose, significant emphasis is also usually given to decorative and aesthetic features. Lampshades come in a huge range of designs, shapes, colours, sizes and mate...rials. So you have to be careful when you choose the right one for your room. It has to match the rest of the décor just right. Actually there are too possibilities: the lampshade can either blend in, in which case it has to match the rest of the room, or stand out so it needs to contrast with the surrounding décor. Consider proportion and scale. The size and shape of the lamp base will determine which shades will work. Just go for a shape that works, the lamp shade that you like is usually the correct one. Although the choice is personal, you should keep the three Ss in mind when choosing a lampshade: Shape, Size and Surface. The shape of the shade eg bell, coolie, drum, empire, hexagon, square is usually determined by the size and shape of the lamp base. While there is no simple formula a basis is: The height of the shade = 2/3 the height of the base; width of the shade = 1/2 inch wider on each side than the widest point in the base. The material the lamp shade is made of is a little trickier, as that decision is based on both function and room decor. For example, if the purpose of the lamp is to provide accent lighting or to create a diffused effect, then a dark coloured shade or a dense material is ideal because it will project light from the top and bottom but not much through the shade itself. On the other hand, if the purpose of the fixture is to provide illumination for ambient light, then a translucent shade is recommended this can be soft or bonded, and most commonly would be an eggshell, natural fibre or off-white colour. Other than functional constraints, there are no hard and fast rules governing what materials work best for which shades. Generally, you may want to match furniture finishes, wall colour, window treatments or floor coverings but its a fashion statement.

17.01.2022 Chandeliers Also known as girandole or candelabra lamp is a branched ornamental light fixture designed to be mounted on ceilings or walls. Chandeliers are often ornate, and normally use candle shaped globes in either halogen or LED. Classic chandeliers have arrays of hanging crystal prisms to illuminate a room with refracted light.... Contemporary chandeliers assume a more minimalist design that does not contain prisms and illuminate a room with direct light from the lamps, sometimes also equipped with translucent glass covering each lamp. Modern chandeliers have a more modernized design that uses LEDs, and combines the elements of both classic and contemporary designs; some also equipped with refractive crystal prisms or small mirrors. Industrial or Rustic chandeliers use wrought iron, wood, and others in a rustic yet urban design. Reminiscent of factories and farmhouses. Chandeliers are distinct from pendant lights, as they usually consist of multiple lamps and hang in branched frames, whereas pendant lights hang from a single cord and only contain one or two lamps with fewer decorative elements. Due to their size, they are often installed in hallways, living rooms, staircases, lounges, and dining rooms. However, miniature chandeliers also exist, allowing them to be installed in smaller spaces such as bedrooms or small living spaces. Chandeliers evolved from candelabra and were invented during the medieval era. They originally used candles as their source of light and remained in use until the 18th century, when gas lights, later superseded by electric lights, were invented.

14.01.2022 Beautiful Glass Lighting Lighting is no longer simply about bringing light to a space its about making a statement. Glass pendant lights have a timeless design and are bound to make a statement in your home. Glass pendant lights also help to bounce natural light around so whether youre trying to make a space appear larger or brighter, they can be a really clever addition. What is especially great about glass pendant lighting is that they complement traditional and contem...porary design. Simple, clear glass pendant lights make a statement without being over-the-top intricate and decorative. Pendants which allow you to see the warm glow of the bulb within or reflect the light in dazzling arrays, look amazing, but the best part about them is their neutrality. They complement a wide range of interiors, from industrial, to minimalist, to coastal, to art deco. One of the best things about modern pendant lights is that many of them can be hung in clusters or rows. This can be particularly effective in the dining room, kitchen, or entryway. In particular, hanging a row of three or more pendant lights above a kitchen island has become a popular interior trend.

08.01.2022 Lighting or illumination is the deliberate use of light to achieve a practical or aesthetic effect. Task/Directional Directional lighting simply means lighting that travels in a specific direction. Directional light is the light coming from a singular direction that is stronger when it hits a surface head on and weaker as the angle becomes more gentle. This kind of illumination is ideal for task lighting because it can provide a strong, uniform light on a work surface. ... Ambient/General General or Ambient light provides even, overall illumination and is intended to create a uniform light level throughout a space, independent of any special lighting that may be needed in targeted areas of a room. Considered the base-level of lighting, it makes a room more welcoming by eliminating strong dark-light contrasts. Accent/Highlights Highlighting or accent lighting draws attention to a particular object, such as artwork, sculpture, plants or bookcases. The brighter light from the accent lamp often creates visual interest to a room. Accent lighting is often used outdoors, to highlight a beautiful tree, plant or water feature, or to draw the eye to a particular area of the landscape.

03.01.2022 Although historians now agree that Thomas Edison didnt actually invent the light bulb but rather just patented it, he remains an important figure that will forever be associated with the light bulb. The light bulb is more than just a source of light inside our homes. Its also become a part of interior design. Light fixtures that let the light bulb stand out and be visible instead of hiding it can be quite stunning. Theyre particularly spectacular when used to add an indust...rial or vintage element to a room. Antique filament light bulbs, Edison light bulbs, and vintage light bulbs all refer to carbon- or early tungsten-filament lamps. Most of these bulbs are reproductions of the wound filament bulbs made popular by Edison Electric Light Company at the turn of the 20th century. They are easily identified by the long and complicated windings of their internal filaments, and by the very warm-yellow glow of the light they produce. While the intricate filament design never fully left, innovations in energy efficiency outpaced the highly inefficient design. Still, years after more efficient designs had come into play, Edison-style or vintage lights saw resurgence in restaurants wanting atmospheric lighting or vintage themes. Modern "Edison light bulbs" are designed to replicate the same light color and bulb shape to offer a more energy-efficient version of the popular vintage bulbs. The desire for more efficient reproductions has led to the development of LED filament bulbs, which recreate the appearance of multiple light-emitting filaments within the glass envelope. LED filament bulbs are substantially more energy-efficient and produce less heat. Modern LED filaments can reproduce the same vintage style but with more variation in colour and strength. NOTE: Original filaments are restricted to a maximum 25Watt due to energy efficiency regulations.
03.01.2022 Night Lights A perfect night light for your little one. Put aside the fear of monsters and darkness by using a comforting night light to illuminate your child's room . For comfort. ... Having a night light on for your toddler could be that added reassurance when things start going bump in the night. Nightmares can begin as early as 2 years of age and when nightly fears develop, adding a night light could provide some comfort to your child. Understand why they need it: what is scaring them and be sure to address the core issue first. If your child needs the night light for comfort, let them have it. If it means helping them feel safe and secure in their environment and promotes better sleep for all, then its not a battle you need to have. For newborn nightly visits. Many families of young babies use a baby night light more for them than for the infant. It helps them see what is going on in the room when they are checking diapers or giving those nightly feeds. As long as you dont turn on the overhead light and the night light isnt too bright, its fine. But try to turn it off once your child is sleeping through the night. For potty training. Arming your newly night trained child with their own night light or flashlight is a great way to encourage some independent potty trips to the bathroom. Equipping the hallway and bathroom with a small night light so they can see the way to the potty is also a good idea. And sometimes just for a fun and cute addition to a childs décor.
