02.01.2022 By now, I assume you have heard the news, 191 new active cases in Victoria and the decision to reimpose Stage Three restrictions from midnight tomorrow night. B...efore discussing my take on the large active case number, the restrictions and where we are at as a State, I firstly want to again bring our perspective close to home, so that each of us can appreciate our personal risk. Knoxs active cases remains at 4. This includes the 3 active cases within the Lysterfield / Patterson Lakes family cluster. Our neighbouring municipalities where we may work or have family & friends are as follows - Casey - 18 Whitehorse - 6 Manningham - 5 Monash - 3 Maroondah - 3 Yarra Ranges - 2 Greater Dandenong - 2 Cardinia - 0 Overall, the number of cases in our region, in the context of the volume of testing continues to be slow and steady - the testing is showing the virus exists in the outer east however the number of new cases are not occurring at a rate faster than those recovering, so by all accounts the virus if we lived in an outer east bubble is containable and can be suppressed if people follow the rules. The fact is we dont live in a bubble. We also know that as restrictions were relaxed and our communities were getting comfortable, so too did many people start to be selective as to what government guidelines they would follow and under what circumstances. It became easy to let certain practices slip. It is really important not to blame, judge or point the finger as to who did the wrong thing and who didnt. Its not helpful and it wont make you feel better. Actually, blaming, judging and finger pointing are likely to generate frustration and anger. All our energy is needed to get on top of this situation, so please do your best to car park any such feelings if you can. ** PERSPECTIVE - through the looking glass ** I havent had a chance to read the many posts made earlier tonight, however I am guessing that there will be questions as to why all of metro Melbourne has to revert to stage 3 restrictions. Having listened to todays press conference and now digested the media release and data, I am 100% supportive of the Outer East being part of the Stage 3 restrictions, for the following reasons - > Of the 191 new cases today, 37 could be linked to previous outbreaks, 154 are "under investigation". This is 101 more "under investigation" than yesterday and the number of cases in this category is growing rapidly. This worries me. > The number of active new cases per day is significantly more than the number of people recovering, which means we are not close to flattening the curve. > Test results are taking up to 5 days to get results (longer for some). This means, 191 is not "the peak" - the worst is yet to come. We will likely see high numbers for the next few weeks. > Today, the Premier and Chief Health Officer advised that despite the 1000s of staff they have contact tracing, the sheer volume of work required is no longer manageable and they have reduced confidence that they are going to be able to fully track, trace and isolate contacts. There are 645 active cases which using the Chief Health Officers formula equates to a minimum of 5,800+ people they have to try and contact, test and isolate. Then they also need additional resources to monitor those with the virus and close contacts are doing the right thing in isolating. This task is proving beyond immediate capabilities and the turn around times between doing the tracing and testing is much slower than the spread of the virus and insufficient to turn this rise in cases around. > Probably most concerning of everything I heard today, was the acceptance that some of those currently in hospital are going to die. Not may die. The Chief Health Officer was very clear - they are of the view that a number currently in hospital will die. How devastating for families, waiting, watching, praying, knowing this. It is heart breaking. And so if the virus has past the point of being manageable, or able to be suppressed and those in Government and the Health Department can now predict that individuals will die, then we need to do whatever it takes to make sure this doesnt become a tragedy beyond our comprehension. There is a lot to talk about following todays announcement and many questions I am sure. I will try my best to answer them tomorrow. What I do want you to take note of before I end todays post is - I have not at any time above mentioned the word "Lock down". We are not prisoners. We still have the freedoms we need to get through this. We are being asked to reduce our personal risk to a small containable geography - our home, our neighbourhood, our municipality. - You can still go to the shops for your essentials (there is no need to stock up). - You can still grab a coffee or takeaway from your favourite cafe. You should still attend medical appointments if you have them. - You can still enjoy the many wonderful open spaces within Knox (or your own spaces for those in other municipalities) There will be hardship. Many businesses will have to temporarily close again. It will hurt economically. However, if we can stick to the restrictions and support each other, we will work our way out of this mess and back to a a better form of new normal. *This is serious, please follow the stage three restrictions.
