25.01.2022 Happy birthday to the amazingly wonderful Lesley Ikin from Rescue Cats Safe Haven, to whom so many of us owe our beautiful fur families. From abject misery and abandonment they are transformed by rescue and love - we can never thank you enough. Many happy returns dearest lady
25.01.2022 We are Siamese if you please.... interesting Siamese facts .... Siamese cats have CROSSED EYE because of Strabismus. This condition causes the eyes to not line up with each other, and is a genetic condition. The center of the retina is shifted for both eyes, causing them to naturally not see straight.
24.01.2022 A very Merry Christmas to you and yours
24.01.2022 It took a few days for gentle 20 year old silver chinchilla Subi to settle in but we got there - as opposed to his outgoing brother Chewie featured last week, who made himself immediately at home - it just takes the time it takes

22.01.2022 Sarah and Reggie Every now and then we come across really sad cats, there seems to be nothing else wrong with them other than that they are extremely sad. Le...t’s tell you about these two girls who need your help. Reggie arrived to us back in July as a trapped stray cat from Rosevears, she certainly wasn’t a feral cat but defiantly one who needed TLC After being Desexed we placed her into foster care but she never really became happy, she’s not angry she’s just not happy in life and probably feels extremely insecure. Life as a stray cat can be tough, always having to defend for yourself and most have a colony of cats that they belong to, we figured that Reggie seriously needs a friend to bond with and she prefers cats over people which is understandable (some of us are the same) Sarah Do you remember the saga that unfolded when someone left a cat in a trap out the front of our adoption centre with no letter or no phone call? Yep well that’s Sarah. What we didn’t tell you is this poor girl who was left out there so frightened was infact pregnant and 48 hours later she went into labour. Little Sarah who was a kitten herself gave birth to one tiny kitten. Sadly for Sarah after this ordeal her little one deteriorated and didn’t survive. Since the loss of her kitten Sarah has been very depressed, she’s friendly but just not happy. We haven’t had success with either of these girls in the way of having them purr or play like a happy content cat would. So hence we need assistance We think they should go to a home on a foster to adopt program for approximately 4-6 weeks, there is no fee associated to this and any medical needs if they occur will be covered by Just Cats, all you need to supply is the home, your love, and your time. This is so the girls can feel secure in one home, bond with the same people, and not have to deal with changes which occur in the shelter. If things work out then they can be adopted, if not then perhaps we learn more about what home will be best suited moving forward They are both great with cats, need a secure indoor home, no dogs and no children under 10 years old A quite home where someone is around lots. With someone who is understanding of their needs, someone willing to talk to them even though they may not talk back Both girls are young and under 12 months old, Desexed, vaccinated and Microchipped Could this be you?

21.01.2022 Commiserations to our clients who have had their holiday plans dashed due to the Sydney outbreak. What a year its been! A good news story after our post on Friday seeking a new forever home for Pippi. Unsurprisingly there was a great deal of interest in this gorgeous young boy and by the next day he had found his new family. Upon meeting, all parties fell in love. It was simply a perfect match. A few minutes after arriving at his new home, he was already making himself ...completely at home which comes as no surprise as confidence is one of Pippi's super powers. A beautiful home, a loving family, a lovely fur friend called Bertie to pal up with once they settle in and a new name to start his new life. Podrick formerly known as Pippi has found feline heaven. Have a great life Podrick and many thanks to his lovely new family for giving this utterly gorgeous boy what will no doubt be a fabulous life. . Thankyou Just Cats and to everyone who enquired about offering Podrick a new home.
21.01.2022 EDIT - thank you everyone she’s on her way to us Urgent transport required for a sick cat in Devonport to be brought through to launceston ASAP Can anyone help
21.01.2022 This divine gentleman has achieved the venerable age of 19 years young but you’d never know it to meet him... Chewie is a young at heart beautiful golden Chinchilla who enjoys several servings of breakfast, lunch and dinner.. incredibly social and sweet, he has shared all his life with his best pal and older brother by a year Subi - a silver Chinchilla who is much more reserved than his brother and presently snoozing on his heat pad. Chewie’s adorable tongue trait has been a lifelong habit since kittenhood - pretty cute
21.01.2022 PLEASE HELP The story about Tomas We had an urgent call on the weekend from the After Hours Vet in Hobart about a cat named Tomas who was hit by a car and susta...ined some serious injuries Sadly his owner is not financially in the position to go ahead with his surgery but no one wanted to end Tomas’s journey on life yet either. So of Course Just Cats said yes to taking him on and covering the costs of his urgent survival needs. We sat up Saturday night waiting to hear how Tomas went and at 1am Sunday morning the message came through that he survived surgery and was in recovery. We couldn’t be happier with the outcome so far. He has a long road ahead of him to recover from this but the After Hours Vet and other local clinics who are looking after him during the day are really doing an amazing job We hope he will be fit to travel to Just Cats later this week. Now we need your help though For us to take in these cases we need to ask for financial assistance So please if you can help us help Tomas we would seriously appreciate it We gave the go ahead for Tomas to receive emergency surgery as we don’t want funds to stop us saving lives but his account alone is close to $3000 If you can donate any amount large or small it all adds up Please donate to Tomas today Via CC https://donation.giveeasy.org/just-cats-tasmania Via Westpac Just cats Bsb 037608 Act 579574 Even $5 (the cost of a coffee) Will help Tomas today
20.01.2022 A MESSAGE FROM GRANDPA TRIPOD ABOUT RESCUE ANIMALS Tonight, I sit here thinking about how lucky I am. Someone... Actually a few people cared about me when I wa...s taken to a high-kill [for cats] pound. Arrangements were made for my safety and for that I will be forever grateful. So many other cats, kittens and dogs are not as lucky as I am. Why? 2 reasons. 1. Some people breed animals and don’t desex their pets, often not ‘purposely’. Then they breed, adding to the dog/cat overpopulation problem which inevitably results in more homeless animals going to pounds that are already overcapacity. Or they take up a spot in someone’s home which could’ve been taken up by a rescue animal. 2. People choosing to buy an animal from a registered or a backyard breeder instead of adopting one from an animal shelter or rescue group. Most rescue animals aren’t abused, ‘broken’ and most aren’t old nor have lots of medical issues like I do. Most were loved at one point before being discarded or ending up at a shelter through a series of unfortunate events (note: there are certainly some genuine reasons for animals to go to shelters, such as owner passing away etc). When you want to bring an animal into your life, ask yourself, ‘if I was at an animal shelter, would I want someone to pick me or buy an animal from a breeder?’. Visit your local animal shelter to adopt or foster and I can guarantee the animal you choose will be grateful that you have given him or her a second chance Thank you for listening to my little voice on behalf of all the rescue animals. - love Grandpa Tripod
19.01.2022 Have you noticed that your cat has a saggy belly? Kitty hasn't eaten too many treats; it's actually a normal part of your cat's anatomy! The technical term for this belly flap, which can often be seen swaying from side to side when a cat moves, is called the primordial pouch. This loose skin and padding at the belly provides extra protection for the abdominal area during fights when bunny kicking with their hind legs. It insulates and protects internal organs and allows a ...cat to store extra food in its belly. (Important for our ferals who sometimes go days without eating.) It also allows a cat freedom of movement to fully stretch and extend the back legs when running at high speed or jumping. Some people believe that spaying or neutering causes this primordial pouch. This is a myth. All felines, regardless of their size, shape, or sex have this extra flap of skin (including lions and tigers). Even cats who lose weight due to diet or illness still have these belly flaps. (Many thanks to My Feral Fix for sharing this information).

18.01.2022 It’s that time of year, and just like us, sweet Mimi can’t believe school holidays and Christmas are just around the corner. Undoubtedly everyone is happy to have the freedom to travel again and bookings reflect a very busy holiday period. Over the next couple of weeks we will be in touch to reconfirm current bookings and at the same time, invoicing for your fur persons visit will be forwarded - payment is requested and appreciated BEFORE checkin via direct deposit, credit ...card payment over the phone or eftpos on dropoff to streamline the checkin and checkout process for everyone’s convenience. Importantly, please ensure all vaccinations are up to date and if flea treatment or worming is required (optional), may we recommend that this is administered at least one to two weeks before arrival as these treatments can on occasion upset tummies. If your fur person requires medicating while they are visiting, please provide us with clear written instructions. For highly anxious cats, we recommend Zylkene capsules 75mgs for cats - this is available from your vet or online at the Pet Chemist or Vet Shed. We suggest that Zylkene is started two or three days before bringing your fur baby into boarding as this will assist with any anxiety they may be feeling before coming into boarding. If your fur baby is extremely anxious we further recommend a supply of Zylkene is provided to last for the duration of their visit which we can administer daily in their food. The benefits of Zylkene can be researched online. Please note we continue to practice strict covid protocols and precautions including social distancing for everyone’s safety. Many thanks for your kind assistance in these matters to ensure an efficient and stress free process for all parties over a busy period. Please feel free to call and discuss any aspect of the above or otherwise
17.01.2022 Please help if you can - any amount will make a difference - Kate has given many hours as a volunteer and foster carer for Rescue Cats Safe Haven and now her own beautiful boy Didak has been seriously hurt by a dog attack and has had extensive surgery - it would be great to give back a little to someone who gives so much Lesley xxxxxx
16.01.2022 Don’t forget Zander Please even if you can’t adopt - come visit and let him sit on your lap It’s pretty much the only time he stops crying... Actually here’s an idea Come visit us and have Zander on your lap for 20 min and we will give you a free Just Cats Bumper sticker
15.01.2022 LillyPilly mascot, Pompi is an extremely chillaxed guy. His nickname is "nanna" so named as he is always trying to play "nanna" to cats that he senses may be a little upset. Naturally we don't let our cats mix with our feline clients but it does highlight the very relevant problem of anxiety when taking cats out of their normal routine and environment. Below are a few helpful suggestions that may assist your feline companions in the lead up to, and drop off boarding proces...Continue reading

14.01.2022 At this time of year many of our clients use the grooming services of our recommended professional groomer, LIANE, who provides a convenient in house grooming service for our feline clients whilst they are boarding. You can find and like Liane's Grooming Service on Facebook. Liane’s expert, caring and gentle approach not only provides a positive grooming experience for our feline clients but the end result is a beautifully groomed cat. Regular grooming is very important and e...xtremely helpful for the health and comfort of your feline companions. As the weather warms up, it is important to remove your cats thick winter undercoat, and even more so for our long haired friends. Stripping out a cat’s winter undercoat prevents a number of issues from arising. Quite apart from excessive shedding of hair all over carpets and furniture, regurgitated hairballs are reduced due to less ingestion of loose hair as cats groom themselves; it also prevents matting which over time diminishes blood flow to the skin, can be painful and restrict movement and may then require clipping. Trying to brush out a matted coat is very difficult and can cause discomfort. During hot summer months, many of our clients prefer to have their cats thick coats clipped for comfort and to prevent matting. Generally speaking, the majority of cats tolerate grooming extremely well. On occasion however anxiety medication such as zylkene is helpful. It must be noted that there are cats that require sedation by a vet for grooming and in these instances, it is best to contact your preferred vet. Liane has 20 plus years of experience in the care of cats and grooming and her services include: removing undercoats, matting, all over clips (lion cut), nails, bathing for skin issues and many other grooming requirements. Liane’s business card is attached for your information or appointments can be made via LillyPilly.

10.01.2022 In loving memory of George Williams who sadly crossed the rainbow bridge yesterday Dear George was a beautiful ginger gentleman and was adored and greatly loved by his family - it is doubtful he could have found a more loving and caring family, when 8 years ago, he together with his tiny shy sister Georgina, were discovered as abandoned kittens in the backyard. How they got there is a mystery but notwithstanding the circumstances, it was a lucky day for them both. Their n...ew family including their older Siamese sister Pixie adored them both and they lived a wonderfully happy life together for many years. In 2018, George was hit by a car and sustained severe brain injuries that in reality should have killed him. Incredibly he survived this severe trauma due to intensive vet care and in the months that followed, the devoted nursing care of his family 24/7. George required intravenous feeding and constant care to recuperate - his every need was tended to by his loving family and eventually he did recover after many months of care, although his injury did leave a lasting effect on his health. Despite it all, he continued to live a happy life with his family. Tragically yesterday morning George became extremely ill while with us in boarding and was rushed to AMC where he lost his battle with brain injury, suffering a devastating stroke. Despite how ill he was, dear George's purr motor never stopped. His family, who are still in the process of relocating to Launceston, are naturally devastated. So are we. This post is in honour of this truly beautiful boy and his loving family. George spent his life completely loved for who he was; his family battled valiantly to save him and give him a wonderful life and in this they succeeded and can take some comfort. George will always be remembered for the beautiful sweet gentleman he was and the joy he brought to his family. Sincere condolences to George's family on the loss of their beloved ginger boy.
10.01.2022 After spending 8 weeks at LillyPilly while waiting for a flight home in these tricky times, Cuddlepie headed of on a very big adventure for a little girl, all the way from Launceston to her home town of Geraldton in WA. Cuddlepie is aptly named, wrapping her arms around you and giving big smoochy cuddles. We were very happy to see she arrived safely in Perth and then a mere 5 hour drive home to Geraldton and her doting mum. We miss you and your cuddles gorgeous girl which no doubt mum is catching up on

08.01.2022 It has been a very stressful and expensive week here at Brightside. We have taken in so many high needs dogs recently. Dogs with nowhere else to go. The vet bi...ll for the week will be over $17,000. Hoot is one of those dogs. I’ve known little Hooty since he was a puppy. He was surrendered at 8 weeks of age for a ridiculous reason, he had an underbite. Hoot was adopted by an older couple who are very special to me and they have given him a wonderful life. Sadly his human mum passed away recently and only weeks later Hoot lost the use of his back legs due to spinal problems that suddenly appeared. Hoot was very pleased to see me when I dropped in to his home this week. He was so happy and seems totally unconcerned by his dragging back end. I bought Hoot home to Brightside to live (as the physical layout of his home isn’t suitable for a disabled dog) and on Thursday he had spinal surgery. There is a chance he will recover and a chance he will need a dog wheel chair. There is sadly also a chance he may become incontinent. I am feeling positive as are our wonderful vets at Hoot will need intensive hospital care for ten days before we can get a good idea of what the future holds for this dear sweet little dog. I am starting a fundraiser to help with our vet bills for Hoot. If you feel you would like to donate I would like to thank you in advance. We could not do the work we do for animals without our incredibly kind supporters

07.01.2022 In loving memory of dear Lily Donaghy - it was a true delight to get to know and love Lily and her brother Charlie after they arrived from New Zealand and spent over a year at LillyPilly while waiting for their dad to relocate. No doubt relocating to a new country was a slightly terrifying adventure for two 12 year old Maine Coones who had led a very quiet sheltered life in Auckland. However the two siblings settled in very quickly and made themselves very much at home. They... loved to lounge around all over the facility, usually up high where they had the best view to keep a close eye on what was going on. In due course, their doting Dad arrived and they started a new life together in Launceston. After moving into a beautiful new home, Lily’s favourite spot, apart from dad’s lap, was sitting on the balcony with a wonderful birds eye view of the Tamar sunrises and sunsets and spectacular rainbows. Lily loved affection and attention and showed her great pleasure by excessively drooling all over your hand, a sure sign she was blisfully happy... A few months ago it became obvious something was amiss with Lily’s health and sadly this week her dad had to make the most difficult decision of all - the last act of love for his dear Lily. Deepest condolences to Dad and Charlie on the loss of your beautiful Lily, a most beloved companion, beautiful soul and friend. Always remembered See more
05.01.2022 Happy Father’s Day to all the great cat dads out there... remembering Freddie Mercury who would have been 73 yesterday - a great cat dad, he adopted cats from shelters and rescues and had over 10 cats who were his family each with their own bedroom. His favourite was Delilah and he famously wrote a song about his special girl

04.01.2022 Moochie Update - Moochie had her surgery yesterday with eight teeth removed. She is recovering well and hopefully in the next few days she will be feeling much better without constant pain. As the vet explained, oral and dental disease at such a young age is a hallmark with brachycephalic flat faced breeds. It's very difficult not to feel upset on behalf of the breeds that suffer so greatly all because they have been bred to have "the look" irrespective of the negative ef...fects on their health. Moochie is only 3 years old and her friend Munchkin, who had such a deformed face and severe breathing and eating difficulties was only 2; the only kindness we could offer dear Munchkin was to gently help her over the rainbow bridge. Thankfully Moochie now has a clean bill of health and will hopefully go on to lead a long and happy life. She has been through so much over the past month; for the next few weeks she will have time to just rest and recuperate and at some point we will be looking for the perfect forever home for this lovely sweet girl who has so much love to give. A very special mention regarding the generosity of everyone who donated towards Moochie's surgery. $400 was raised, which went a long way towards the vet bill. Thank you for your incredible kindness towards this dear sweet young lady. It is so greatly appreciated.
04.01.2022 AND SO THIS IS CHRISTMAS ...... Christmas for us means more sick or abandoned or stray kittens, mums and adults .. It means surrenders of the saddest cats hav...ing to leave what they have called home. It means bottle feeding orphan kittens every 3 hours night and day over and over. It means litters and litters of kittens handed in after being found or trapped. It means so many stray or dumped scared adults coming in after being left at rentals, or found in bushland and streets It means sick kittens filled with worms, covered with fleas and ticks. Why would this Christmas be any different !! Like little ginger baby Rudolf in our photo who was found in a paddock yesterday morning in the pouring rain - starving, skinny and so so scared. Twenty four hours later he is snuggled in his igloo with a heat pad and his heart-beat Lambikins and being syringe fed every few hours til he gains strength - this is just one tiny life you will be helping to save This is what we are currently dealing with this Christmas and it’s hard. But we need to be that safe place for all these cats and kittens , we need to wipe away our tears, manage our frustration and focus on getting each and every one back to health and in to wonderful forever homes So on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and Boxing Day and beyond think of our volunteers and foster carers giving up some of that special time with their families to care for all these little ones. This Christmas we ask for your help to help us continue doing all of this into the new year , any amount from as little as $5 from all our supporters can make such a difference in helping us help these needy cats and kittens. (And remember it is tax deductible for you. ) This Christmas make it special for these sweet babies by donating for our Christmas Kitty Campaign and sharing this far and wide You can donate either via our GiveEasy platform : https://rescue-cats-safe-haven-inc.giveeasy.org/default Or via our Wetspac bank account : Rescue Cats Safe Haven BSB: 037012 Account: 353881 Reference: Christmas
04.01.2022 The Adventures of Grandpa Tripod - for those not following the Adventures of Grandpa Tripod on Facebook, you are in for a treat. A heartwarming testament to the fact that all animals and in this instance, cats, can be easily adopted at ANY age - even in their very senior years. They adapt and thrive in new homes with age appropriate care and love and go on to live some of their best years. I hope you enjoy Sir Grandpa Tripods narrative about his daily adventures.
02.01.2022 Behind the scenes at Just Cats Orphans and stray cats This time of year finds us travelling around rescuing orphaned kittens that stray cats have birthed in p...eoples gardens, under houses, sheds or barns. It’s always sad when mum cat takes off to hunt and in the mean time her kittens have been rescued without her - of course it’s important to collect them for a couple of reasons 1- she may not return 2 - she’ll take them somewhere else and now we have more stray cats roaming the streets Sometimes we can catch mum and reunite her with her babies but sadly most times this doesn’t happen So far over the last couple of weeks we have taken in 46 orphaned kittens and 6 mum cats with a combination of 19 kittens between them. And let us tell you that this is just the very start of kitten season Just this Saturday we had a call at 4.30pm regarding two kittens found at the back of a shed under some tin in Mayfield, mum cat had been spotted but not approachable - we collected the kittens and set a trap to catch mum. At 8.30pm the call came that mum cat was in the trap so off we went to collect mum. She’s young only maybe 7 months old, scared but understandable- she’s now reunited with her babies, safe, warm and no need to go hunting as she’ll have food served on tap At 11pm another call came in - 4 kittens found in the front yard at a property in Youngtown, mum cat had been spotted but again not approachable - we collected these new born kittens and set another trap to hopefully catch their mum. You can only image the work that goes into looking after neonatal kittens - these little ones need to be fed a bottle every 3 hours (including over night) Therefore last night was an all nighter for myself as I’m already feeding 10 orphans that are now 4 weeks old but their bottle is 4 hourly Foster carers are vital for our organisation and we are always searching for more to help with the load during kitten season, we do hands on training for neonates or you could help with older kittens or take on mum and bubs If you would like to know more about fostering for Just Cats please email us at [email protected] The four new borns have not been reunited with mum yet, however we are still trying. In the meantime they left today to join Naomi who is fostering them. It’s amazing what happens at Just Cats while most people are sleeping, our carers are up feeding and saving lives - of course we love it - it’s what we are here to do - but it’s tiring at the same time. If only we didn’t have so many stray cat’s left alone to defend for themselves. Let’s get them off the streets - if you know of a stray cat please call us to report them on 63889202 Please continued to donate to Just Cats - this helps us continue to fight for those less fortunate Via Credit Card or PayPal https://donation.giveeasy.org/just-cats-tasmania Via banking Just cats Bsb 037608 Act 579574 Reference orphans
