18.01.2022 BOARDING KENNEL REMINDER This is a reminder to be very careful who you leave your beloved pets with over the Christmas New Year break or indeed at any time you ...go on holidays. A number of people have contacted Lawyers for Companion Animals after their pets have died or received substandard care at boarding kennels or indeed to alert us to issues occurring at boarding kennels. Some of the horror stories we have heard about come from kennels with very flashy websites and describe the kennels as a resort or hotel. Some of the information we have received has come from ex-employees who have told us what really goes on behind the scenes at some of these places. Some of the cases we have dealt with include: Death at boarding kennel from heatstroke Death at boarding kennel dogs and cats burned alive Death at boarding kennel from attack from other dog Dog coming back from boarding kennel very timid, scared and afraid. Dogs traumatised, trembling and cowering. If only these poor creatures could tell their story. Cattery giving the wrong black cat back to owner (of another black cat). Cattery losing a cat. Cat not being fed the proper diet resulting in severe health problems and almost death. Cat’s collar being embedded in neck of cat (how the cattery did not notice this is a mystery). Some of the things to watch out for include: Poorly maintained kennels Kennels with poor ventilation Kennel operators over-stocking animals and taking in more than their permits allow. Does the kennel have a 24 hour vet on call? If in the bush, does the kennel have a proper bushfire plan? Please be very careful who you leave your pets with and if you have a gut feeling at the place is not good please trust your intuition. Your pets life could well depend on it. I have attached some news stories that are in the public domain that relate to deaths or injuries at boarding kennels.
