24.01.2022 Just over 20 years ago, on September 20, 1999, an Australian led, multinational peacemaking mission known as INTERFET (The International Force East Timor) helpe...d to bring peace and stability to East Timor after years of unrest. In the days leading up to the INTERFET deployment, the Chief of the Defence Force at the time, Admiral Chris Barrie, said INTERFET would be ‘the most significant military undertaking we [Australia] have had since World War Two.’ To help commemorate this significant anniversary, RSL Victoria has published seven stories from servicemen and women, civilians and journalists who were in East Timor during INTERFET. Their stories are ones of service, resilience and hope. We encourage all of our followers to click this link: http://interfet.rslvic.com.au/ and explore our commemorative feature on INTERFET. 23.01.2022 It’s time for the Andrews Labor Gov to commit funds in next week’s Budget to duplicate the track between Mooroolbark and Lilydale. With construction works on b...oth level crossings, and the Kinley housing development underway, it doesn’t make sense to leave the outdated and inadequate single track on this major metro line. It will: create jobs fix the Hull Rd bridge improve frequency and punctuality for local residents and commuters down the whole train line to the city

19.01.2022 LIFE SAVERS: THE AUSTRALIAN NURSES WHO WENT TO VIETNAM Saturday, 20th March 2021 It came without warning. One moment, nurse Janet Glasson was preparing to clock off for the night from her shift at the ramshackle hospital in Long Xuyen, 190 kilometres south-west of Saigon; the next, she found herself staring at the hospital doors as they burst open, and a tide of broken, bloodied bodies surged towards her....Continue reading

17.01.2022 Today is the 102nd anniversary of the Battle of Montbrehain - the conflict for which George Ingram of Seville was later awarded the highest award for bravery on... the battlefield - the Victoria Cross. Lt. George Mawby Ingram, M.M, 24th Bn., A.I.F (Seville) - . Citation for the Victoria Cross - 'For most conspicuous bravery and initiative during the attack on Montbrehain, East of Peronne, on 5th October, 1918. When early in the advance his platoon was held up by a strong point, Lt. Ingram, without hesitation, dashed out and rushed the post at the head of his men, capturing nine machine guns and killing 42 enemy after stubborn resistance. Later, when the company had suffered severe casualties from enemy posts, and many leaders had fallen, he at once took control of the situation, rallied his men under intense fire, and led them forward. He himself rushed the first post, shot six of the enemy, and captured a machine gun, thus overcoming serious resistance. On two subsequent occasions he again displayed great dash and resource in the capture of enemy posts, inflicting many casualties and taking 62 prisoners. Throughout the whole day he showed the most inspiring example of courage and leadership, and freely exposed himself regardless of danger'. Hopefully this time next year we can all get together and pay tribute to George with a small ceremony at his magnificent memorial in Seville.

11.01.2022 It's R U OK?Day, a reminder that every day is a day to start a conversation that could change a life. Today we're calling on Australians to learn what to say af...ter R U OK? so they can keep the conversation going when someone says they're not OK. There's more to say after R U OK? Learn what to say when listening with an open mind Learn what to say when encouraging action Learn what to say when checking in Learn how to continue a conversation that could change a life. When we know what to say next we can help someone open up and find pathways to support long before they're in crisis. Learn what to say next and help us move closer to our vision of a world where we're all connected and are protected from suicide. Head to www.ruok.org.au/how-to-ask

10.01.2022 A public appeal on behalf of the committee and members of the Lilydale Sub-Branch for the safe return of this memorial and not be dumped. "Lilydale RSL is saddened and appalled by the senseless damage to the oldest and most sacred war memorial in the Yarra Ranges and one of the oldest in Victoria with the theft of the memorial plaque commemorating the Relief of Mafeking. Lilydale RSL is appealing for anyone who may have information that may assist in recovery of this most historically significant plaque to please contact the Lilydale Police on 9739 2300 at the earliest opportunity........"

08.01.2022 Confronting scenes were unfolding as Australian troops arrived in East Timor for the INTERFET deployment, and Professor Major General Jeffrey Rosenfeld (Rtd.) t...ook much of it in his stride. I joined the ADF to serve my country and when called upon to serve I had no hesitation but to agree to deploy, he said. Working as a consultant surgeon to INTERFET Professor Rosenfeld worked around the clock to look after military personnel and the local population’s diverse health needs. Sometimes, he would visit villages in the mountains to deliver remote health care, including administering antibiotics and vaccinations. Mostly though, he was based at the old museum of Dili which had converted into a hospital by the Australians. An average day at the hospital if there was one would start with ward rounds and patient reviews. Nobody knew how the rest of the day would unfold. Emergency cases ranged from draining abscesses to orthopaedic surgery, stitching up machete wounds and repairing gunshot wounds. What Professor Rosenfeld remembers most about his time in East Timor as part of INTERFET and Later with the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) is the camaraderie that developed while on overseas deployment. The very positive element of being on deployment is that you really do feel part of family. You know that everyone is looking after you, your welfare. Everyone has got everyone’s back and everyone has everyone else’s welfare at heart. We’re all trying to look after and protect each other. 07.01.2022 NEW BOOK COMING SOON!! 'A CENTURY OF SERVICE' To celebrate the club's centenary, the Lilydale RSL sub-branch have produced a history that details the story of t...he club over the last 100 years. Started in 1919 at a meeting in the Athenaeum Theatre by men who returned battered from the First World War, it was from the outset a non-political group set up to fight for their rights and benefits. The club continued decade after decade, helping many of their comrades along the way and eventually adopting their fellow ex-service members who served in the defence forces during the Second World War and in the years that followed. The first RSL in the Yarra Valley, today it is the oldest non-sporting or non-church related club in the Lilydale township and the fact it is still around, after a roller coaster existence of ups and downs, is a credit to the hundreds of members who believed in its values and principles of service. As the book shows, the sub-branch continues to serve, assisting former service members and their dependents, educating on and protecting our Anzac heritage and providing a social atmosphere, so important to the well-being of many in the community. Their annual Dawn Service has grown to become the largest single event in Lilydale's calendar. Available for sale soon!
