25.01.2022 Building a Destination Recovery Squad PART 2. Purpose, Focus, Action. So how do we survive and thrive beyond C-10? ... We must adapt and move through the phases of our current reality together and engage our airport communities and destinations. These strong relationships we form now will carry us into the recovery phase and ensure a more united destination. Objectives of Recovery Squad: Ensure everyone is on the same page and engaging (important to look out for eachother as human beings as well as professionally) Sense of weekly communications to replace monthly networking events Collect two-way information between the greater destination and the airlines/airport and government Who should be on the taskforce? Select key local opinion leaders two can act as a two-way communication portal between the recover taskforce and other operators (ensure a mix of visitor info centres, local tourism organisations, tour operators, accommodation, chamber of commerce and airport representatives) Airport members should pass info on about what is going on in the greater destination onto the on-airport community (ie. Ground handlers, retailers, car rental companies, security and airline staff). Example focus areas: 1. Establish a barometer for tracking recovery with forward occupancy rates. * Encourage operators to submit each week their forward occupancy rates to the airport/LTO for the next 3 months (ie. 10% April, 20% May, 20% June). * Collect this data each week and keep it aggregated and confidential. * By tracking this each week from now to the end of the year, we can have a focus on watching as a group how industry recovers and share this info regularly with key partners (such as airlines and councils/boards). 2.Build a recovery strategy ready for execution * Including an events calendar * Short-stay itineraries ready to roll 3. Share what individual businesses are doing to steady the ship and build stability among their teams to maintain productivity at these uncertain times. * How do we keep teams engaged and centred and feel destination connectiveness?

25.01.2022 Today Team Lime had a great afternoon of cooking and packaging meals at FareShare for hundreds of struggling Aussies in need of food. Amazing to learn how much food wastage there is and how organisations like FareShare are turning quality produce destined for landfill into tasty and nutritious meals. Thanks Team Lime for a fun afternoon for a good cause!... #limeintelligence #fareshare #teambuilding

25.01.2022 Keeping connected and sharing stories can be such a positive and powerful force. Today Carly Wieland, Lime's Joint MP interviewed Trevor Wilcock, CEO of Mildura Airport in Victoria about how Mildura has navigated COVID. We shared stories of positive leadership and a strategy all around engaging staff and keeping them feeling part of the team. While its been tough, Mildura Airport is optimistic about the 'silver lining' of COVID and the future as capacity starts to return, caf...e's are opening (and expanding!) ready for Christmas. This is part 1 in a series of regional airport interviews from Lime. Sharing the love, the wisdom and experiences of our amazing airport community :) https://youtu.be/61NHyun5DW0

25.01.2022 Local Love and Loyalty Lets focus on the feel good factor. With peoples mindset and needs changing every few days, how do we be relevant and real to our local communities and build genuine long-term relationships?... Capturing local community support for your airport and tapping into outbound demand is definitely our lowest hanging fruit when it comes to airport marketing. It is also the most economical! How can we build local loyalty and support in this time where a sense of community is more critical than ever? That feeling of belonging to something bigger than yourself and evidence of giving back is highly desirable with long lasting benefits. Human values are coming more to the fore right now. How will you be remembered when COVID-19 becomes a case study in history? What can we do? Some ideas: 1. Identify local businesses and share their stories of how they are pivoting at this time. 2. Talk to local produce providers what are the icons locally that your communities love? Is there any opportunities for new partnerships and making these products available in the terminal? 3. Can you plan to host an airport dinner to celebrate the reopening once it happens. A money cant buy experience what local produce would you serve? 4. Maybe its a one time market in the car park or airport open day? Doubling as an opportunity to capture an increased database for the future! 5. Which local Instagram Icons or Celebrities can you partner with? There has never been a better time to focus on brand values and harnessing the power of local loyalty for future outbound travel and community support. Demonstrating humanity, generosity and warmth. Build local engagement and genuine connections with those around us. It will pay you back in months to come!

24.01.2022 Build your local tribe! I think we have all found ourselves dreaming lately * what restaurant would we go to first when restrictions are lifted? ... * Where would be the first destination Id travel to? * What local coffee shops would I organise a coffee date with friends? Why not post these questions to your airport community and build your local tribe? Ask them to share their favourite thing to do locally that only locals may know about. Local secrets! Do they have a pic they could share? Lets get a two way conversation going. Building on the theme of local engagement, lets encourage locals to comment on your social media pages and share their local hot spots. Where would they take their family if they came to visit? Most tourism entities I have spoken with in the past week are strongly of the opinion that the VFR market (aka visiting friends and relatives) will be one of the first markets to rebound when restrictions are lifted. Lets use this time to get a list of local tips and ideas together we can share with tourism stakeholders and airlines in building authentic itineraries (designed by locals who know the destination best!). How can we capture these ideas for future VFR digital marketing campaigns? Meet your customers where they are right now. One of the opportunities we have during COVID-19 lockdown is to enhance our brand and share of voice among the 100s of daily advertising messages. While many organisations have stopped or dramatically reduced their marketing spend, how do we stand out? Capture ideas with a human element and talk to locals about the things they miss the most and what they are dreaming of! Bring on the dreamers, the hope, the positive focus and loyal tribes! .....and dont wait until everyone else is doing it!

22.01.2022 Airport Communities Keeping Kids Busy at home (and building thankful parents / future flyers!) I think we all agree that COVID-19 has driven us into a spin with trying to cope with working from home and now home schooling! Yikes! I can only speak for myself when I say the idea is rather frightening!!... With the reality now setting in that we are going to be in this situation for a few more weeks (my fingers are crossed!!) yet to come, how can we maintain our sanity and engage with our local airport communities to keep in touch and relevant at this time? My business mentor said a few things to me this week which really resonated: 1) Pay it forward what can we do to help others right now? Whether it be ideas, acts of kindness, information or just being there and keeping in contact. 2) Work life balance sets you up for failure yes its true! Aiming for a work life blend is more achievable in our current juggle of family and work life being thrown in to a virtual snow globe and shaken up. More about this one tomorrow! But for now, what can we do as an airport to continue to show leadership and lean in to our local communities? Today we are talking kids (which is very real for me right now!) and how to entertain the little darlings :) Building on outbound social media messages and communication content, you could target a week of ideas for families locally with an airport theme. How to be relevant now? Give parents ideas on what they can do with their kids and at the same time get across airport messaging and build loyalty. * Idea 1. Run a competition and ask kids to draw their best pic of the airport terminal or runway in action for a prize (maybe a hamper of entertainment goodies including board games sent to their house?). * Idea 2. Get kids to design their perfect holiday itinerary again with the winner being posted on the airport social media site with a prize. * Idea 3. Who wants to be an airport manager for a day? Get kids to send in a short 60-90 sec video via Youtube of them being a pilot or airport manager (any aviation role they aspire to!) and again ask for permission to show on social. This prize can be a VIP behind the scenes at the airport day when it reopens. Plus the glory of winning and sharing their glory on social (again to capture more locals onto your FB page!). Keep it real, keep it relevant and stay sane yourself! Carly

20.01.2022 Freight Demand Study Successfully Engages Airlines for Nelson Airport. Lime Case Study. In late 2019/early 2020, Lime Intelligence was commissioned by Nelson Airport to complete an air freight demand study. The purpose being to collate relevant secondary data available and combine this with primary research of key primary producers in the region. This report has been a key enabler for the airport to actively engage with airlines during COVID-19 and how to focus energy on... potential freight growth. Being well received by airlines, Nelson airport team has been able to assess air freight potential and understand the supply chain networks and key players in various primary producer groups and share this with airlines. David Scott, Manager Infrastructure and Assets at Nelson Airport commented, Everyone who has seen the report has raved about its quality. It is a comprehensive and well structured report which delivers clear insights into the drivers of air freight and how Nelson as a region is positioned in the New Zealand Market. Our airline partners have equally complimented the quality of the report and the relevance of the information. Moving forward, having an in-depth understanding on the current freight flows and potential for growth, the airport is well equipped to look at future commercial opportunities. Contact us if you would like more info on how to build a freight study designed to feed straight to airlines for commercial growth. [email protected]

13.01.2022 WHAT DOES SOCIAL DISTANCING MEAN FOR AIRLINE LOAD FACTORS AND MEASURING DEMAND? Its been great to see some positive announcements this week about restrictions lifting on travel. Woo hoo! In Australia we have set some dates around the start-up of interstate travel coming back and for New Zealand, Level 2 Alert status came into effect yesterday and with it multiple new domestic routes on sale. ... And while we still face a long road to full recovery, I think we are all in the mood for some positive moves! It is Friday This week Ive had many chats with airports and tourism folks around what does this all mean for demand? And while airlines are adding back frequency (thank you!), what can we expect in regard to load factors and creeping back to pre-COVID passenger numbers? A key consideration is what are the airlines in reality allowed to sell how many seats onboard are available per flight? Load factors wont be operating at some of the high 80% full of pre-COVID levels. So for the fly market, even if we return to pre-COVID capacity, the flow on effect of social distancing will mean less passengers in airport terminals for the short term. That is unless we can add frequency! In an attempt to quantify what social distancing onboard means in one spot, Ive pulled together the below table which estimates the number on seats by airline and aircraft type. Logic used is based on: * Airline advice around not selling middle row seats (Ive estimated what removing these would mean for capacity); * A caveat around these estimated capacity levels is that if large family groups or folks from the same household are travelling together then the number of seats sold would go up. Airlines have said they will aim to seat family together; and * Every airline is treating the situation slightly differently so these estimates could change. These are designed as a guide/estimate only to aid forecasting and it will be interesting to see how long these restrictions stay in play. Most folks agree its likely to remain until at least September.

11.01.2022 Building a Destination Recovery Squad PART 1. I have observed lately that we as humans are more than ever blending our authentic selves and our professional selves in everyday business. And now more than ever in a time of great uncertainty and isolation has connectedness and communication become more critical to our future business success and mental health. ... And lets face it, a clear and strong mind generally enables and leads to success! So how do we survive and thrive beyond C-19 and maintain productivity? Leadership Clarity Stability Engaging with partners Pivoting A future plan (the recovery plan) In the coming months we will continue to go through weekly changes to our current reality. Talking to some of our airport partners, they have said people around them have moved from: dismissiveness to panic to focussing on predicting impacts reporting internally to instability and waiting to see what Government directives were to now a focus on staying connected to their teams and mental health. What phases of thinking have you noticed at your airport? Most of us are currently in survive mode! HOW DO WE MOVE TO THRIVE MODE? One idea is to take the leadership on setting up a Destination Recovery Taskforce. More details in my next post. Collaboration is no longer a buzz word this s**t is getting real! #limeintelligence

09.01.2022 Raising Staff Spirits - The Force is Strong With You! The consistent theme that keeps coming up is ensuring that your team feels connected and valued in this time of uncertainty. How about a double benefit idea of asking staff to write 150 words or less about their favourite work experience at the airport and then taking the best answer to share with your community Facebook page?... Airports are always emotional places filled with excitable hellos from friends and family. Do your staff remember the best and most memorable greeting or farewell from one of your passengers? Do you have an internal Facebook page for staff or extend this to the larger on airport community? Even using internal email communications and asking folks to cc in all with a response. Maybe offer a small prize for the best answer! Then share this with the greater public community for your airport show them how staff are staying positive and why they should continue to love and support their local airport. Turn fear into focus with a little of what we all love our working at airports

08.01.2022 What are airports talking about today? Topics in focus. As we move through the evolution of COVID-19 each week airports have a different focus (or different take on where the attention internally needs to be!). From the initial shock and scramble to get together some impact forecasting, to then throwing this out the window when travel restrictions ramped up, to them being faced with closing airport terminals all together! ... Its been a serious rollercoast for all of us. Who knew Zoom calls would be part of our daily lives? If theres any upside its a mute button and getting around in shorts and t-shirt most days. Weve all been more engaged than ever in webinars, info gathering and tuning into our industry associations. This again is a positive. It would be great to think that we could all be this collaborative post COVID-19 imagine what we could achieve?! In discussions Ive had this week, the current phase of thinking is all about whats next. Some key themes from this week were: 1) Forecasting is somewhat futile but needed * What could a recovery look like and phasing in of schedules? * Most agree schedules are likely to be at about 50-60% of pre-COVID schedules by end of 2020. 2) Schedules likely to be re-designed * Many also agree schedules will not the same as before how could a phase in look at your airport? * What were the best performing flights previously (these could be your initial winners). * Do you have data to back this up and present a recipe to an airline for a realistic phase in? 3) Consumer Confidence to Fly * How do we encourage demand by assuring our customers the airport and flying is safe when restrictions are lifted? Opportunity for a coordinated industry campaign? * Can our industry associations play a role in developing this on behalf of airport members for consistent messaging to the public? * Traceability and visible safety for the public using temperature scanners and tracking passenger movements for COVID case reporting? How do we do this cost effectively and consistently across industry 4) Destination Collaboration * Most agree the focus will be on domestic travel to kick start * How are our destinations positioned to market to domestic flyers? * Airport role clarity We cannot accurately predict when and what schedules will look like but we can stay ahead by looking at the next logic steps to recovery at our airports. There is still lots we can do!

08.01.2022 Airport Cafs When should I open? Shared airport experiences around Aus/NZ With more flights already operating in NZ and Australia starting conversation about getting back to 50% of the domestic pre-COVID network from July (as long as the borders open!!), many airports are focussing now on changes to their commercial space. In particular, re-opening cafes and F&B options.... This week I spoke to multiple airport folks and caf operators who are open about their experience during COVID. Overall, there were a few consistent themes: * Customer response has been positive and when asked should we open the answer is yes! *Not only is it positive for staff morale and customer experience, but it can still be profitable on a limited menu and with reduced operational costs. * Operating on a reduced menu is key with a focus on grab n go options packaged up with drinks. * Peoples attitudes are changing. And where at the beginning of COVID 19 they were fearful of purchasing food for fear of contamination, now they are more relaxed and keener to buy again. Ballina Byron Airport Experience - Beach Bar and Grill Talking with the lovely Nerida Baker (owner and operator) of the Beach Bar and Grill at Ballina Byron Airport, she is super happy to be back in business after experiencing a period of shut down over early April. We have had to adapt with more of a grab and go offering and ensuring only limited fresh ingredients compared to those with a longer shelf life as we currently only have 2 Jetstar flights a week, said Nerida. Its just about thinking differently and instead of bulk orders from supplies, we have one employee now pick up the bare essentials from the supermarket on the way to the caf that day. This keeps a core offering of fresh products without food waste and keeps costs down. One of the best kickers for promoting passenger purchases at the airport caf is the regular announcements by airline check in staff that there is no food on board the flight due to COVID 19. Alerting passengers to buy before they fly has certainly helped said Nerida. Another benefit of being open for business is warming up staff before we kick off again with an expanded schedule. Its great for staff morale and keeping their skill sets up before we get busy again. We are also finding on airport staff coming to the caf to show their support, it gives hope its working for us. 02.01.2022 WE ARE 100% CONFIDENT IN OUR PREDICTION . This is the year of Re-forecasting Frustration Syndrome (RFS). Lets face it, demand forecasting is going to be a volatile exercise in FY21 and 100% of us will do a re-forecast at some stage!!! ... Unpredictability is the new norm! Forecasting is always a mix of science and intuition at the best of times, and FY21 is the ultimate year to release the inner gambler in all of us. Given the difficulty in forecasting, weve compiled a few ideas on how to have some fun with forecasts in 2020: * Cocktail making and forecasting session (Dry July is nearly complete so im a bit excited!) * Bingo or lotto numbers (everyone pics a number) * Looking at a crystal ball for magic answers (tea leaves optional) ... Or you can always contact us at Lime! With nearly 15 airport forecasts completed so far this year, we can give you some advice and support on how you are tracking with forecasting and insights. All our customers can have the flexibility of uploading as many re-forecasts as needed with multiple scenarios to track the changes in thinking over the next 12-18 months. Let us help (leverage our 50 years of combined airport experience!). Happy cocktail making!
