20.01.2022 The LIME Network acknowledges the passing, and pays our deepest respect to Professor Dennis McDermott, and we recognise what will be his lasting legacy on our shared work. Dennis has been central to the LIME Network for nearly two decades. Dennis exemplified Leadership in Indigenous Medical Education. His keynote presentation at LIME Connection V in Darwin in 2013 with the late Prof. LC Chan on Medical Humanities challenged us to think about the world outside of ‘hard science...’, and how that often fell short of the humanity which exemplified Dennis’ approach to life, his work, and his relationships with us. We will miss Dennis’ characteristic ‘radio voice’. His advocacy, and his own cultural humility. Our thoughts and prayers are with his immediate family, and with the many communities who recognised Dennis as one of their own.

19.01.2022 The Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM), together with Tumu Whakarae, the National Reference Group for Mori Health Strategy Managers for Distric...t Health Boards and Te Ohu Rata o Aotearoa (Te ORA), New Zealand's Mori Medical Practitioners' Association, acknowledge the devastating threat and damaging generational impacts that COVID-19 presents to Mori communities, iwi, hap and whnau. Drawing on data from influenza pandemics in 1918 and 1957 and the H1N1 Swine Flu pandemic in 2009, we know that Mori suffered significantly compared to non-Mori /European populations, with death rates among Mori seven times more compared to non-Mori2. This reality is also acknowledged in the New Zealand Government’s worst-case scenario modelling on COVID-19 and potential health impacts report3. For more information please click on the link below.

16.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE: Indigenous Doctors warns that racism will cost lives Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients must be treated ethically and equitably in ...relation to testing and treatment for COVID-19. The Australian Indigenous Doctors Association (AIDA) was very disturbed to receive feedback that, in a New South Wales regional hospital, a patient who identified as an Aboriginal person was denied testing because priority treatment would only be offered to real Aborigines. AIDA has also received a message that in a Western Australian hospital, a comment was made that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients only get it because they don’t wash their hands. Such blatant racism can never be tolerated - least of all at this crucial time. Read full media release here: https://www.aida.org.au//Indigenous-Doctors-warn-that-raci

08.01.2022 Tn ttau katoa e tama m, e hika m, Kia kaha ttau It’s at this time of great consternation for our whnau, for our friends and for our patients - that I w...ish us all the best in the days, weeks and months ahead. Along with others, Mori doctors are involved at every phase of this COVID-19 response in disseminating messages, in public health planning, in organising hospital readiness, in the front line response and in our own homes keeping whnau as safe and as well as we can. We have all noted some parts of this COVID-19 situation that are particular to us as a Mori community: the impact upon our customary practices; the difficulty of being among the least well resourced communities in Aotearoa; the literacy levels that might not see us among the best informed; and the likelihood that outcomes will be worse among those we love. And for us as Mori doctors it is equally pertinent: the disproportionate burden that we will see in our practice(s); the lower level of resourcing for Mori services; the higher expectations that will be placed on you and the shape of your response to COVID-19; and and the likelihood of inequitable outcomes for Mori whnau that you are taking care of. All of us are being called upon to work actively and, on a daily basis, to fight this epidemic. You have seen many of your colleagues taking a public stand on many COVID-19 related issues including Papaarangi, Sue and Rawiri who are leading the Mori Pandemic Coordination Group, Te Rpu Whakakaupapa Urut, and countless others are following the lead and contributing to the effort. So, be kind to yourselves find a sweet spot and spend some time in it take a breather when you can!
