24.01.2022 As a former international and local community development worker now orienting myself in the health and wellness space, I view this as a really important discussion to be had... Please join in to this free offering by Yoga for Humankind and Fierce Calm if you can. ‘Co-facilitated by diverse members of the @yogaforhumankind & @fierce_calm community, together we aim to create a safe and brave space to learn, unlearn and unpack. Exploring core concepts, mindsets, practices and ...action towards decolonisation and anti-oppressive practice - for a world of equity, love and collective wellbeing ’ Love it.

24.01.2022 I want to be guided by older-ups. I want babies to be born where old people die. I want to be sandwiched in the middle of a messy togetherness. I want to be war...ned before I do something stupid. I want to be forgiven when I do it anyway. I want wisdoms to be tapped out on my eardrums and not Googled. I want transitions to be recognized by fire. I want gifts to be educed from children. And teenagers and adults and I want to mean something to my community. I want to get drunk on substance morning and night. I want to hear your dreams. I want to raise a revolution for gentleness. I want to call out the bullshit on consensus reality. I want to get rich so I can billboard the highways with validations. I don’t want to be another faker. I don’t want to show you my good side and hide my humanity. I don’t want to dole you out my Self in digestible status-chunks. I want to challenge you in long, drawn-out rituals and still find you interested. I want to feed you seventeen course meals made with spices I crushed. I want to recite you circular poems, each beginning cutting a deeper grasp. I want to make you feel something, even if it’s awkward. I want to sing you songs which are ancient and new. I want to carve stories in trees with tools my elders fashioned. I want to keep sharpening them. I want to find places we’ve never been. And then, I want to return there, but backwards. I want to shuffle up words so we don’t sleep through them. I want to learn things and then be splashed into never forgetting. I want to make you feel seen. I want to hold your pounding heart in my gentlest of hands. I want to make your thing feel like my thing. I don’t want to miss a moment. I want to dig at the bottom and find it false. I want to turn up unknown depths. I want to stand in this hurricane and sing the sweetest, most naked song you can bear. I want to be alive with you. ~ Toko-pa Turner, excerpt from Belonging: Remembering Ourselves Home www.belongingbook.com Art by Molly Costello Art & Design www.mollycostello.com

18.01.2022 : , & The Ayurvedic concept of involves setting out and performing daily self-care rituals. The routine and consistency of performing these practices at the same time and in the same order each day (usually first thing in the morning) helps to regulate our body-mind system and can improve sleep, digestion, mood, concentration and increase our overall feeling of vitality. ... We are all unique and varied in our constitution and some people thrive and find it very easy/comforting/necessary to have consistency in their day, while others may find it harder to stick to a set routine or may not feel the need/benefit/inclination as much - and that is ok - in fact it is great - but everyone will probably find some benefit from thinking about and implementing some routine in their life. Behind the immediate physical benefits of cleansing and self-care practices such as brushing your teeth, washing you face, oiling + massaging your body, cleansing your digestive tract, having a good bowel movement, warming up + stretching your body and clearing your mind, there are a myriad of phycological effects related to easing into and preparing ourselves well for the day ahead - most notably and profoundly for me has been the acknowledgement and commitment to the fact that my own self-care matters, that looking after myself is not only good for me, but it is also good for my family and the work that I do in the world. It is a small reminder and self practice daily that I matter, I really do. 18.01.2022 : , & One thing I love about ayurveda is that it offers us so many options and so much guidance for bringing ourselves back to balance and whole-of-being good health. ... There are three core principles which guide us in deciphering what any body needs at any given time - the first is to take into consideration a person’s individual constitution - their prakruti - literally original creation - the unique combination of the three dosha incorporating elements (earth, water, fire, air, either) in the physical and psychologic make up of a person. Second is the nature of the imbalance - the vikruti - here is where the real art and science comes in gathering information, reading symptoms and considering a range of factors that have an influence on how someone is feeling on any given day. And third is an understanding of the nature + effects of various treatments which may be offered. But there is one treatment which can be administered by an Ayurvedic practitioner or by the self which to me sits above all else in relation to self-care an oil massage - known in Sanskrit as abhyanga. Scroll through for a simple self-massage practice you can do at home. Look up which oils (carrier and others) would best suit your dosha and any issues/emotions you wish to focus on and be sure to give yourself plenty of time to really enjoy it. This beautiful act of care and kindness is the ultimate gift of self-love and can do so much to help bring healing and restore health at any moment, but is particularly wonderful if performed as part of your morning routine - and while it may take a little bit of time + effort, the benefits of this beautiful ritual are so worth it! ps: how gorgeous is my model?! only 3.5yrs and so obliging! I’m so glad and proud she is learning from such a young age about how to care for her body+mind in these ways. it was so beautiful to share this practice with her x #selfcare #selflove #ayurveda #ayurvedaaustralia #ayurvedstudent #ayurvedapractitioner #ayurvedalifestyle #abhyanga #abhyangamassage

17.01.2022 : & When I run workshops on self-care I like to give people some frameworks for thinking about self-care - different ways of identifying, categorising and exploring what we might do to look after ourselves better. ... The first is to think about what we might do daily, weekly and/or seasonally. Daily self-care practices might include things like your personal hygiene routine (shower, brush teeth, brush hair etc). They might also include things like daily exercise (run, walk, swim, yoga etc). And, it might include things that you do to help relax, calm and nourish your mind and nervous system (meditation, mindfulness, breathing exercises, reading a book). Or they might just be other random things that help you feel good, on top of things, that give you a moment of rest/time to self/or to help bring you back to balance and presence (a cup of tee/coffee/chai, phoning a relative or friend, journaling, a gratitude practice). Weekly self-care practices are often things which may take a little more time or which we don’t feel like we need/want to do daily but which help keep things in check and which nurture and nourish our body/mind/soul and we know are really good for us so we try hard to find time at least once a week to do them. It might be things like cooking/baking, creative or artistic projects like knitting, painting, drawing etc. Perhaps they are more active hobbies like hiking, riding a bike, surfing, going to dance class etc. Or maybe they are practices which are good for your body like self-massage, a hair treatment, taking a warm bath. Seasonal practices for self-care are much more varied and for me this category represents things that we might do repeatedly throughout the year such as going camping for some time in nature each holidays or they might be individual things that we do which more match the season we are experiencing such as a spring detox or a winter warming retreat. And of course, as this diagram suggests, there are some things that might fit into all categories for you which is great! Have fun exploring!

15.01.2022 : & Howwe spend our daysis of course howwe spend our lives. Whatwe dowith this hour and that one is whatwe aredoing. | Annie Dillard... I first heard the quote above a few years ago and at the time it hit me hard - i think it shocked me in that moment into realising that everything I do, everything I fill my day with is an expression of the life I am living. The simplicity of it captivated me and the directness catapulted me into action. I go back to it often to check in with myself that I am in fact living the life I wish to be living. I recognise that we all have obligations and that not everything is within our control 100% of the time, but really, when you stop and think about it you probably do have more choice and control than you often think I have made some big, radical changes in my life over recent years which have completely altered what I ‘do’ with my days - I assure you there are ways and means of getting closer to what you desire to be doing. What has this got to do with healthy habits & nurturing hobbies and self-care? Well, if you stop to think about the activities that you do that fill in your time - especially the down-time outside of home/family and work/community commitments - that is of course how you are filling your days and your life. Are these activities supporting or hindering your physical, mental and emotional health? Have you ever tried to break a habit or introduce a new hobby? Are there things you know you would like to do more of but never find time to get to it? For those playing along at home, here is your first challenge this week identify one thing you would like to integrate into your self-care routine/life right now. Write it down as a goal/intention and stick it on the fridge as a reminder to work towards (remember to make it a SMART goal: specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound) Here’s mine: I will find 1 hour every day to sit down and read a book. Good luck! + follow along for tips on how to align your habits and hobbies for better self care #selfcare #selflove

11.01.2022 : , & Have you ever stopped to think about your natural inner rhythm and routine?... Are you a ‘get out of bed and go, go, go’ kind of person or are you a ‘wake up slowly and ease into the day’ kind of soul? Do you work hard + play hard all week and then rest + replenish over the weekend or do you move in daily cycles of work, rest, play or perhaps play, work, rest is more your style? Becoming better acquainted with our own natural inner rhythm and routine helps us to better schedule in self-care practices and rituals around everything else we have on the daily to-do list. Knowing when your body/mind will most feel like and benefit from a particular activity allows you to optimise and get the most out of it. Recognising what kind of person you are in the early morning/evening helps you to work out when is best to put aside time for self-cleansing and nurturing practices such as bathing, eating, exercise, meditation, breath-work, sleeping etc - without it feeling too much like a chore or out of place to what your whole-self wants to do and how it wants to move at any given moment. I distinguish them in this way: routine - your daily ‘to-do’ list, dot points of every activity you do in order as the minutes tick by eg; after I wake I 1.go the loo, scrap my tongue, 2.brush my teeth, 3.wash my face, 4.drink a warm lemon, ginger, honey drink, 5.have breakfast and so on rhythm - more the feeling or ‘flow’ of how your day unfolds eg; I tend to move/be/do things slower in the morning then feel more productive and ‘on’ in the late afternoon ritual - practices or behaviours which have a slightly special, more spiritual, deeper intention behind them and which connect me more fully to self, others and the world around me eg; a warm bath with oils + salts to help my body and mind relax vs a quick shower just to get clean and start the day I invite u to get curious and start to map your daily/weekly routine, rhythm and ritual practices - it’s sure to be illuminating and will hopefully allow you to integrate even more self-care into your life. #selfcare #selflove

10.01.2022 : , & When we prioritise self-care + self-love we are prioritising health, healing and wellness above all else. ... We are prioritising living our best life, being our best self and giving our best to others. In the busyness of the day-to-day that many people find themselves in, constantly balancing competing priorities and regularly feeling like there isn’t enough time in the day, how do we find time for self-care? - a thing that feels a bit like a luxury, is often devalued by our dominant culture and seemingly takes up more of our time? Schedule it in. Make a date with yourself. Block out time in your calendar - just like you would a meeting or deadline. Let people around you know what you need and when and try as hard as you can to not compromise. Planning out looking after ourself as we would plan out tasks for work, parenting and other commitments helps to make time for it and ensures you get it done. With time and practice you get better at it - at saying ‘no’, at putting yourself first, at making it part of your daily/weekly/seasonally routine, but first we get intentional, first we plan, carve out time, set goals + practice achieving them. Then, when you start to see results, when you feel the benefits of doing life a different way then things slowly start to shift, your rhythms change, your priorities shuffle and you’ll find you engage with yourself, others and the world around you in a whole different way. I promise you x #selfcare #selflove #lookingafterme #lookingaftermyself #prioritiseyourself #prioritiseme #prioritisehealth #prioritiseyourhealth #prioritisewhatsimportant

09.01.2022 : & Friends, in this final week of reflections, encouragement and tips for integrating more self-care into your life I want to introduce you to a few different ways that I like to look at and think about self-care - or as you know I like to term it self-love - because that is what self-care actually is, it is a practice, an expression, a gift from ourself to ourself of LOVE in whatever way we need it in any... given moment. It is the gift of listening deeply to ourself and meeting our needs without judgement or resentment or shut-down but with compassion and understanding and action. and when we learn to be able to do this better for ourselves we learn to be able to do it better for others too - we learn to extend care and love to others and that in turn builds and contributes to collective care - a felt sense by the collective, (hopefully the majority) that we are all ok, that we are resourced, that there are people out there who have our back, that there will be someone there to hold us in times of need, that when i feel down/depleted/warn out others will feel spacious/energetic/with capacity, that I can rely on others while I attend to my own needs and that this relationship of give and take is reciprocal and cyclical in nature, and that in it’s essence, is a beautiful thing it is life, it is living, it is love. sending warmth and hugs, x Ali #selfcare #selflove #collectivewellbeing #collectiveconsciousness #care #kindness #love #compassion

09.01.2022 This is why I'm dedicating 6 weeks to focussing on my own and other's self-care. No matter how this pandemic is affecting you, what we are currently living through is strange, confusing, destabilising and prolonged. Here is a gentle reminder to keep looking out for yourself, looking after yourself and to cut yourself some slack - it's ok if you're not doing ok. As suggested in the article here are some key areas to focus on: sleep, nutrition, exercise, meditation, self-compa...ssion, gratitude, connection, and saying no (setting healthy boundaries) The pandemic has demonstrated both what we can do with surge capacity and the limits of surge capacity, says Masten. When it’s depleted, it has to be renewed. But what happens when you struggle to renew it because the emergency phase has now become chronic?"... "While the phrase adjusting to the new normal has been repeated endlessly since March, it’s easier said than done. How do you adjust to an ever-changing situation where the new normal is indefinite uncertainty?"... It’s important to recognize that it’s normal in a situation of great uncertainty and chronic stress to get exhausted and to feel ups and downs, to feel like you’re depleted or experience periods of burnout.... We have to expect less of ourselves, and we have to replenish more, Masten says. I think we’re in a period of a lot of self discovery: Where do I get my energy? What kind of down time do I need? That’s all shifted right now, and it may take some reflection and self discovery to find out what rhythms of life do I need right now?... "The malaise so many of us feel, a sort of disinterested boredom, is common in research on burnout, Masten says. But other emotions accompany it: disappointment, anger, grief, sadness, exhaustion, stress, fear, anxiety and no one can function at full capacity with all that going on."... https://elemental.medium.com/your-surge-capacity-is-deplete

07.01.2022 This is me two days into my Ayurveda yoga teaching practical with the wonderful Sarah at Aligning Health Retreat & Day Spa. It might be much less then we had hoped and signed up for in terms of not being able to be together in person and is much much shorter than we had originally planned but it has me feeling happy happy! My body, my mind and my soul are all feeling shiny and new. More supple, fluid, grounded, strong, clear and cleansed yet also full of ideas, inspiration,... creativity and courage to start putting what I am learning into practice. Today I am feeling immensely grateful to have found this ancient philosophy and practice which makes so much sense to me and the way I make sense of the world. I am also feeling proud of myself for finally stepping up and making time to study this year something which has been a desire in my heart since I travelled to the incredible land of India 15 years ago. To me, Ayurveda is so much more than a practice or a diet or a concept - it is a way of life and a way of living which calls us to be deeply aware of all the things going on all the time within ourself and in the world around us. I find it to be deeply healing, beautifully balancing and something which strengthens and stretches me at the core of my being... all while teaching me to accept who I am, what I do and what is happening around me simply for what it is. It is profound in its simplicity yet deeply complex and layered and adaptive all at the same time. I truely believe it has something for everyone and I feel blessed to be on the journey of learning and deepening my knowledge and am giddy with excitement to start working with more human bodies once again after these bloody restrictions ease. Life is a beautiful thing.

06.01.2022 I don’t support the fact as this article and report suggest that we should be measuring the impact and only acting on the issue of mental health because of the negative economic consequences but if that is what it will take to make those who need to listen then I’m glad the research and modelling has been done in this way. Sitting here reading this, letting the numbers really sink in and asking myself - where have we gone so wrong? why are we collectively in this predicament...? and how the hell do we change our ways fast? To put it bluntly we are not coping with the society we have built, the systems that are designed to support us clearly are not doing a good enough job, and though I try in my own little way to support the health and wellbeing (thriving) of those I can, I worry not enough people know how to/are able to prioritise their own mental health and wellbeing and I fear we are up against something so big and with more and more force behind it every day (worsening climate emergency, global economic recession, disintegration of democracy and democratic institutions designed for and by the people just to name a few). ‘The report estimated mental ill-health and suicide in Australia directly cost the country between $43 and $70 billion in 2018-2019. The cost of disability and early death due to it is estimated to cost a further $151 billion a year.’ ‘One in five people experience mental illness every year, and half of all Australians will be diagnosed with a mental health condition over their lifetime. In 2018, 2.4 million people over the age of 18 experienced high or very high levels of mental distress.’ ‘Every year 65,000 Australians attempt suicide, and last year more than 3300 died by suicide, he said. Suicide remains the leading cause of death in young people.’ "In reality, where we live, learn and work in our communities is where we experience most of our mental health and wellbeing challenges," she said. "This is where the system response needs to be met with the right levels of coordinated and affordable support and care, and a focus on early intervention and prevention." https://www.theage.com.au//big-challenge-mental-health-ref

06.01.2022 : & There are so many ways to incorporate just a little bit of self-care into your day. ... As adults, many of us let go of our hobbies - the things we love doing ‘just because’ - or struggle to make time/prioritise them in our day/week. Thinking about what you do in your ‘down-time’ and making sure that it is an activity that will support your holistic health and wellbeing goals is a great way to intentionally build a little more relaxation, soul deepening, nurturing and personal growth into your daily routine + you may even learn a new skill or two! Here are some ideas: find a sit spot in nature put on some music and dance draw, colour, paint a picture spend time in the garden/planting in pots read a book read/write some poetry look up at the clouds and learn to classify them by type write in a journal write a letter to a loved one do a jigsaw puzzle go for walk/run/ride take a bath listen to a podcast watch a movie learn a musical instrument cook/bake/preserve grow, pick, dry and mix your own herbal tea bake sourdough bread make fermented food and drink like sauerkraut or kombucha create some pottery sew clothes take up knitting make your own candles build model rockets/trains/planes/houses try basket weaving make jewellery - macrame/crochet get creative with origami do crosswords learn calligraphy grow bonsais/succulents make terrariums dry and press flowers try slack lining climb a tree do woodworking take up photography mix your own aromatherapy oils/skin care/soap make flower arrangements - learn to juggle research your family history collect shells/rocks/leaves/stamps/stickers anything.... or, make unicorn cookies like I did with my little one this arvo. Would love to hear of other hobbies that have your heart at the moment.... #selfcare #selflove #hobby #healthyhobby #healthyhobbies

03.01.2022 It’s R U OK? day, and while I sometimes poo-poo days like this as I think these are practices and states of being that we should inhabit every day of our life, this year it feels particularly important to take some time to stop and check in with myself and others in an intentional and proactive way. So here are 3 things you might like to try today to mark the occasion and more importantly, to bring some deeper connection and a little more love into the world: 1. check in wit...h yourself - make some time to ask yourself R U (really) OK? and make sure you hold the intention to hear and really feel the answer and dedicate time to respond in whatever way feels good for you. ^tending to self is the first step in creating a more loving, caring, deeply connected world 2. check in with someone you love - but be willing and ready to go deeper then just sending a text or an email with R U OK? - pick up the phone for a chat, invite someone along for a walk and ‘check-in’ (whilst adhering to social distancing, wearing a mask, within curfew times and a 5km radius of course!) ^opening up and holding space for others is a gorgeous gift but we need to be genuine in our offering and be willing to go deeper in the questioning and the holding a quick somewhat aloof question - how are you? of course will most likely only illicit a quick and somewhat aloof response - All good. Yeah, fine. I’m OK. rather than really opening up. 3. think about how you might be able to deepen this practice of checking in with yourself and others on a more regular basis - could you host a circle or instigate a regular social catch up with friends? or have you thought about starting a journal or creative practice to help you identify, articulate and map your emotions on a daily basis? ^developing greater self awareness is the first step in any healing journey, is key to sustaining health and wellness and is crucial to developing our capacity to sit with, hold and work alongside others in their full range of emotions - in their humanness. If you’re not feeling ok today or any other day that is ok. If you would like to check-in and chat please let me know. I’m here for you. #ruok #ruokday
