19.01.2022 We farewelled him in an official capacity last week, but today Israel in Australia's Ambassador Mark Sofer and his wife Sara are returning to Israel after an in...credibly successful stint as Ambassador here in Australia. We thought we would share with you the speech that ZFA President Jeremy Leibler spoke about him while farewelling him last week as there are almost no words that we could write here that would do justice to Ambassador Sofer's time here in Australia! What we will see is that it has been a true pleasure and a privilege, and we hope it is not too long before the skies open and we can visit Israel! Safe travels home and Mazal Tov on a wonderful term as Ambassador! "It’s hard to believe that we are here today to farewell Sara and Mark from what can only be described as one of the most successful stints of any Israeli Ambassador to Australia. While I heard Mark comment from time to time that the Australian Jewish community is so proactive he wasn’t sure there was much for him to do, the truth is that he has achieved an extraordinary amount more than most people will ever read or hear about. Mark cultivated relationships with senior people in the Government and Opposition, which gave him ready access whenever he wanted or needed it. He formed relationships with Israel’s friends in parliament but also with her critics. He won the respect of leading decision makers, journalists and newspaper editors including those who vehemently disagreed with him. And regardless of the positions people took at the start of their discussions with Mark, they would invariable leave with far better understanding of the challenges facing the Jewish state. When Mark, Ginette and I spent 5 very intense days in Israel last October with John Howard, Wayne Swan and a number of other very senior former Australian politicians, I witnessed firsthand his extraordinary capacity to engage and inform people. Not to mention his diplomatic prowess in handling a few delicate situations that were bound to arise when former political adversaries were confined in close quarters over several days As they say - what happens on tour stays on tour! The thing is, Mark hasn’t only been successful in relating to people in positions of power. He has very much been the Ambassador to the Jewish community here in Australia. An Ambassador with a deep understanding of the critical role that the State of Israel plays in the life of Diaspora Jewry. The large turnout of friends and supporters gathered here this evening is testament to the profound impact Mark and Sara have had on the entire community. I know that Mark very rarely declined a request or invitation from within the Jewish community. From taking part in speeches, panel discussions and commemorative events, to joining a flashmob dance in Melbourne’s city square to bring in Yom Ha’atzmaut a couple of years ago no one would ever accuse him of having taken it easy Down Under. Nor did he ever shirk the tough stuff. There is no better example of Mark’s integrity than the leadership and empathy he has shown in relation to the ongoing challenge to extradite Malka Leifer. I know how much Dassi and her sisters have appreciated his considerable personal care and involvement. Mark also handled the shocking murder of Israeli -Palestinian student Aya Masaarwe in January 2019 with great compassion and sensitivity. Mark, though not specifically noted in your impressive biography, perhaps one of your greatest attributes is that you’re a true mentsh. And over the past, very challenging six months, as the entire world has been impacted in such a devastating way by the coronavirus pandemic, your experience of managing catastrophic events in India and Nepal, gave you the focus and resilience to roll up your sleeves and do what was needed. In particular, you worked tirelessly to repatriate Israelis from Australia and Australians from Israel. Ginette and I observed first hand how tirelessly you worked, sometimes through the night to get people home. Mark, there is no avoiding the reality that your departure comes at a strange and difficult time in world history. As a consequence, this is not the farewell we would have hoped to have given you you, of all people with much hand shaking, tearful hugs and the opportunity for everyone to personally thank you. But thanks to modern technology we are here online, and our sentiments of respect and gratitude and love are no less sincere. On behalf of the Zionist Federation of Australia, I thank you and Sara for all you’ve done for the Australian Jewish Community and the Jewish people. While it may be sometime until we see you again, there is no doubt that you will remain in our hearts and be a regular fixture on our future visits to Israel."

See more

15.01.2022 Very nice initiative for Melbroune residents before Rosh Hashana!

14.01.2022 79 years ago, on September 29, 34,000 Jewish men, women and children began a forced march to Babi Yar, a ravine north of Kiev. Once there, they were ordered to ...strip and then were systematically massacred by machine-gun fire. The dead and wounded were not buried, merely covered over with earth and rocks. Between 1941 and 1943, thousands of more Jews, Soviet officials and Russian prisoners of war were executed at Babi Yar, with an estimated death total of 100,000.
