25.01.2022 Amazon Prime Scam Alert There are internet, email & phone scams everywhere these days so I will only post about every 10th scam I see from now on We have had a number of reports about emails pretending to be from Amazon Prime which only have a chance of working if you are actually an Amazon Prime member, so, if you are........ The scam email notifies you that your credit card associated with your Amazon Prime account is no longer valid and invites you to login and update your payment details. if you follow the scammer's advice you will give up your contact details, your Amazon Prime login credentials and your credit card details, none of which will end well. If you use Google Gmail (or Google G Suite) for your email, you will see a warning about the email itself and then another warning if you visit the scam web page. If you keep clicking you may as well take all the money you have and throw it into the ocean.... I know, there are so many signs that this is a scam email that nobody should ever be tricked, but it does happen! If you need to double-check the validity of any email you receive, make sure you check with someone you know personally, or give us a call at Lincoln Computer Centre on 08 8682 1666
23.01.2022 This is URGENT. I have never posted a more critical scam warning and that is saying something. If you receive an email with an attachment which lokks like this, do not click "Access Document" and especially do not enter your email address and password as you will be giving that information straight to a scammer and that will be bad. If you have already clicked the link and entered your email address and password, change your password now and contact your usual IT support peo...ple. The file will be delivered via Dropbox which is being used to perpetrate this scam. Next minute, you are at risk of paying an invoice with bogus bank details. Call LCC on 8682 1666 for more info or post here
23.01.2022 OK, I have had enough, and so have our customers and the wider Eyre Peninsula community. I have created this group to call out banks every time they open a bank account for a scammer and enable the scammer to try to steal our money. Australian Banks have lax online bank account application identity checks yet they will all tell you they meet federal Government regulations. Oh, the emails I have received! The big problem? Well, when you open a bank account online, you will ...have to give them some details from your driver's licence or passport etc, you may even be asked to upload said credentials, but there appears to be no bank which actually checks to make sure the face of the person making the bank account application online actually looks like the person on the credentials supplied. Identity theft has been around for a long time, and that's how the scammers do it. They steal someone's identity, which is getting easier and easier to do, they open a bank account online where all the banks use data matching services to compare the information supplied with various databases around Australia. If the data matches, the account gets opened. Take those same stolen credentials into a bank branch and see how you go..... Yes, this is staggering! So, if you have encountered the False Billing scam where the bank details on the invoice were bogus, and particularly if you still have the BSB and account number used by the scammers, tell me your story. Email [email protected] and I will publish your story here, no names, no pack drill, of course!
22.01.2022 I know, I know, this is a dumb email scam attempt but the consequences of falling for it can be disastrous. Google Gmail is all over it and won't let me click the "Verify" link but not all email software will do this. Logging in to anything based on email advice is fraught, always get a second opinion from someone you know personally, or just ignore them completely. Clearly, robots are not allowed to have email accounts, go figure :)
22.01.2022 The reporting on these fake invoice scams is quite frustrating It's not hacking, it's trickery. Somebody had their email account compromised but the article doe...s not mention whether it was the conveyancer or the purchaser What on earth was the conveyancer thinking? Sending bank details via email is a disaster waiting to happen for any high dollar business transaction let alone conveyancing transactions. The conveyancer had to be aware of the risk and should have cautioned the purchaser about the potential for email compromise. And there is no comment in the article as to how the scammer opened an Australian bank account to receive the funds. It happens over and over again, Australian banks have big holes in their online account opening procedures, it's just too easy for scammers The purchaser was very lucky to get his money back, that almost never happens. It would be nice to know why the scammer did not scarper with the funds, all banks keep this information to themselves so it is very difficult to use that information to protect future scam targets This type of scam is real and it's happening on Eyre Peninsula. If you operate a business, or you are involved in a real estate transaction, you are a target and you need to triple-check bank account details with verbal confirmation at least. Trust no emailed invoice. 21.01.2022 A tax deadline is the last thing we are thinking about at the moment, amidst a veritable tsunami of phone and email scams across Eyre Peninsula this past month or so. But this is a good article which covers a lot of what we are dealing with at the moment. Be alert. https://au.finance.yahoo.com//ato-gives-tax-deadline-scam-
19.01.2022 Quick update for our customers * we are trading normally * our shopfront is open * we are following standard Covid-19 protocols with regard to social distancing and hand hygiene * we have tables outside our front doors with antispectic wipes for computers and other goods both coming and going... * we are doing a higher percentage of remote support work as you might imagine * we are receptive to any concerns our customers have with regard to Covid-19 and reviewing our protocols and practices each day * some products are getting tricky to source because a) a lot of what we sell is made in China and b) freight delays are now common * we have better stocks of laptop computers than we usually hold, we are shopping our suppliers hard so that we have laptops available locally to enable people, including students, to work from home * the mid-priced laptops (say between $900 and $1500) are really hard to get, we have some good lower cost options and there are good choices above that range * $3,000+ laptops are readily available * we have good stocks of desktop computer components, again we have increased our stock levels and are shopping our suppliers with vigour, the good news is the price points have not changed * printers are also tricky, it seems everyone working from home also has to print at home * we have good stocks of printers at the moment but the supply chain remains a challenge * our service department is fully operational * we are upgrading computers more than usual where our customers would rather not buy a new computer right now * we are working on, and repairing, and upgrading older computers than usual * so where we would normally expect a good computer configuration has a useful life of 6 to 8 years, we have expanded the range to 6 to 10 years * internet security is even more important than usual with more people working on their own devices at home where free internet security (let alone no internet security) will not be good enough for most organisations * email security is also more crucial than ever as any breach can then impact on the organisation you work for * internet access is also more crucial with work and study from home, we are thinking that existing services will work fine even with the increased load but all bets are off if everyone is watching Netflix at the same time! I have more, but that will do for now we are fortunate that our IT services are still in demand but we are dismayed that many of our customers, our friends and members of our own families are doing it a lot tougher. If you need a hand with your IT needs, give us a call Keep your distance and your hands clean! Greg
17.01.2022 As you may have noticed, we are big fans of Google here at LCC, but sometimes they send me emails which a Rhodes Scholar would have trouble interpreting. Needless to say, this email is moot because we do not operate in the European Union. Now, if some of you could read through this email and tell me what it means that would be great! Wrong answers only please!!
16.01.2022 We often get asked "How did the scammer get access to my email account/computer/bank account" etc. So here is a refresher by way of a classic scam email which has so many scam hallmarks you would wonder how anyone could get done. It happens when you are busy, or under pressure, or you are distracted, we see it over and over again.... Here is the latest scam email deconstructed 1: Someone? Trouble right from the get go, if "someone" had sent you a link, you would at least be able to see their name, not that it would be any safer to open, but still.... 2: I am not adam 3: I don't know who the user email address belongs to of course, and I am certainly not expecting to hear from anyone who lives in France which is what the "fr" indicates. Now if I did live in France they would have more of a chance of convincing me. 4: Never ever, ever, ever, ever, ever open ZIP files, they nearly always contain files which will badly compromise your computer and cost you money, perhaps a lot of money. Nobody should send ZIP files for any purpose these days so it's an obvious giveaway. 5: Why do I need a certificate for signing documents? 6: DO NOT open email links. Especially when they are sent by scammers. Trouble is, lots of businesses send links to their customers and often to legitimately open invoices on-line. Xero is a classic case in point, when you send an invoice to your customer from Xero, they get the PDF file which is appropriate, but Xero also includes a link to open the invoice. Nek minnut, you get a scam email pretending to be from Xero which does not include a PDF file so you open the link..... 7: Oh the irony! pCloud might be trustworthy, not that I was aware of them until today, but even if you trust pCloud, that does not mean you would trust any email purporting to be from them! Same same as getting a call from "Telstra", we trust Telstra (OK, that is debatable!) but just because we trust Telstra does not mean we believe everything we see or hear with the Telstra logo on it, it so easy for scammers. So that's seven clues in one email, sometimes you only get one clue, so be alert. We need more Lerts As always, if you are ever uncertain about a phone call, an email or a web page, call a person you trust for a second opinion. Hang up, shut down your computer, make a pot of tea and consider your options. And by all means call us, it's what we do!
14.01.2022 Stunning news from the State Government just now, 6-day shutdown as of midnight tonight, we are having a staff meeting later today to plan for the shutdown, looks like we will be working remotely but we will confirm this evening. https://www.abc.net.au//coronavirus-australia-liv/12893146
11.01.2022 Just got an email from Tina who runs the St Ann's Motel at Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada! https://stannsmotel.com/ It appears that our scammy friend "James Patrick" from "Travel Agency Europe" is still using the same name and email address as he did last year when I published this accommodation scam attempt last year. Remarkable.... https://www.lincolncomputercentre.com.au//accommodation-sc
10.01.2022 Our power will be off for the next hour or so while we have a new import/export meter installed which means our phones and internet will be off the air. Email [email protected] in the meantime or message me here, should be back on the air by 10.00am
10.01.2022 This credit card scam is an oldie but a goodie, Scamwatch has had advice for businesses about this scam since at least 2009 https://www.scamwatch.gov.au//credit-card-scam-targeting-s I have been leading on my new scam-friend, Frane, for a few days now, he will eventually give me at least one stolen credit card, you will find below a blow-by-blow description of how the scam is perpetrated
05.01.2022 Another demonstration of how nimble scammers are, they recognise new opportunities very quickly and take particular advantage where they fill information gaps with mis-information, trickery and outright lies. So if employers are fullying informing their employess as to the detail of how Jobkeeper works, this scam cannot succeed. Jobkeeper is paid to employees through their employers, if you are not clear on how it works, talk to your employer. https://au.finance.yahoo.com//ato-jobkeeper-scam-041056329
05.01.2022 Mrs Mean might be new to the scamming business, this would be funny if it were not so serious!
05.01.2022 Sometimes, scammers just bring a smile to your face
