24.01.2022 The self confidence this woman must have had despite everything We stand on the shoulders of giants.

24.01.2022 A truth universally known...

23.01.2022 It’s an enormously busy time at my school and most others, and it’s been a long year. Hang in there wonderful teachers!

23.01.2022 Oooooo. I just got home from holidays and on my front step were these little wonders. They are the latest books from Michelle Mitchell - Author, Speaker, Educator. This is one of my areas of passion- that we have open, frank conversations with kids about their bodies and sex. Let’s not leave it to Google! I’m really looking forward to jumping in and exploring. The books are written in kid language and have great illustrations. I’ll let you know how I go soon.

22.01.2022 It was my 30th first day of the school year as an educator today. Strewth! Even after all this time I get a little nervous in the couple of days leading up to ‘the first day back’. I have nothing to worry about: I know what I’m doing, I have friends at school and I like my job. No problems... but still anxious. ... In me anxiety is ‘quiet and reflective’... read moody! I know it, I recognise it and I can manage it. Now think about kids. A few days off a new school year. New teachers, subjects, maybe new kids or even a new school. If they are nervous or worrying, how is it presenting? It might be irritable, tired, sore stomach, OTT behaviour, quiet, shouty, avoidant, defiant, lethargic...anything out of the ordinary. You don’t have to fix it for them, but do help them recognise and label it. Normalise whatever it is they feel at this time of year. Let them know they have everything they need to cope inside of them. .. we all do. Mums and dads and teachers too!

21.01.2022 Channel 9 News reports that a Sydney school is offering HSC students cash incentives to perform well in their subjects. Al-Faisal College, in the western suburb of Auburn, gives out $500 cheques to high-achieving students who score more than 90 in their subjects. Some argue that many parents offer their kids cash incentives or the promise of a car after graduation if they do well, so why shouldn't schools? What are your thoughts?

21.01.2022 Teaching sexual consent is absolutely vital, but how do we go about it? Here is some great advice from an expert in the area.

20.01.2022 Emotional skills develop slowly via modelling, coaching, brain development, and experience. Until those skills are developed we need to co-regulate. That means sharing our calm. https://lindastade.com/the-emotional-skills-every-teen-nee/

20.01.2022 Hi Parents and Teachers, I'm currently planning blog posts for the coming year and would love your input.

18.01.2022 I could not agree more.

15.01.2022 This applies to our kids, our partners, our families, our friends, those at work, our politicians, and especially those who stay powerful and comfortable by keeping us in our place and compliant. Great reminder image Glennon Doyle

13.01.2022 "Unless you were born under a particularly lucky star, there are going to be times when things go awry for your child at school. They might start underperforming or land themselves in trouble. They might act in ways that are counter to the values and expectations of the community. Young people are not socially or emotionally skilled, so challenges will inevitably arise. When this happens, the best advice I can give is, have open conversations with the school; work together w...ith them. Sometimes, parents go into tiger mode. They instinctively come out roaring at anyone who speaks ill of their child. It’s understandable as children are the most important thing in a parent’s world. Similarly, when teachers are challenged, they take it very personally. Teachers aren’t there for the moneytrust me on this! They’re there because teaching is a vocation. It matters to them. When you criticise their teaching, you’re calling into question a big part of who they are. In poorly developed school cultures, this could be the making of a perfect storm. In a conversation school, it doesn’t have to be." (What's a Conversation School? Read the article here: https://www.inspiringgirls.info/post/conversation-school)

13.01.2022 It's true, living with teenagers can sometimes feel like you’re living with a ticking time bomb. You never know when the bomb is going to go off, how big the blast is going to be or what kind of damage your relationship might sustain when the blast is over. There are some good tips here for minimising damage. What is triggering your teen at the moment?

10.01.2022 Stop and take in some joy

09.01.2022 Parents and teachers of teens in WA, this is an opportunity you and your kids shouldn't miss. I went last year and it was tremendous. The keynote speaker is Karen Young - Hey Sigmund whom I share all the time on this page. If your school isn't sending kids, ask why not :-)

07.01.2022 If you're not American, do your kids trick or treat? If you are American, how much has it changed with COVID?

07.01.2022 Springsteen and Obama talking about family and particularly being fathers. I haven’t listened yet but I have a 9 hour drive ahead of me tomorrow so I’ve downloaded it ready to go.

03.01.2022 Sometimes the rules simply don’t matter. First priority is our mental health and the mental health of our families, friends, and students.

03.01.2022 We all hear the message, it’s just so hard to internalise. Especially when you’re a teen.

02.01.2022 "The problem is that any response that disconnects us from our children also kills our influence and their capacity to learn the lessons that will grow them. If we’re looking to support our children and teens towards a better way to be, the only way to do this is through connection." Good read Karen Young - Hey Sigmund
