21.01.2022 The history of IRONMAN Cairns Really proud of being part of bringing this amazing event to Cairns. Those who know me know that I love my history so if you’re keen to find out the origin please read on . Early in 2010 I received a phone call from Michael Denton who, at the time, was the CEO of Queensland Events and they wanted to support bringing a major event to Cairns. He said there were a couple of men who were looking at running some kind of sporting event in Cairns and c...ould they contact me to arrange a site visit etc. Those guys were Darryl Herbert and Geoff Meyers from USM events. The original concept they were looking at was a backpacker ‘Olympics’ to be held at the start or end of the backpacker season to encourage backpackers around Australia to head back to Cairns. I spent 3 days with them, taking them to see different venues and to meet local operators. In the meantime, Felix Walchshöfer, whose family owned the Challenge Triathlon brand, had visited Cairns & was looking for an Australian destination for his Challenge event. He met up with Darryl & Geoff and, after negotiations with Council, announced in October 2010 that the inaugural Challenge Cairns would be held in June 2011. Of note, the original swim leg was off the Cairns marina, and there were a couple of times in the early years where there were a few late ‘stinger seasons’ that put a question mark over the event. Big pasta nights were held at the convention centre and cowbells were handed out to spectators. A couple of years on and the triathlon changed to the Ironman brand and it has been incredible to see this event transform into a Kona qualifier .... and is now one of the biggest triathlons in Australia. To all the competitors and supporters, have a brilliant time tomorrow and thank you for supporting our Ironman .
21.01.2022 Without a doubt, Kuranda is one of our magical places that has been decimated by COVID-19. Thank you to David Crisafulli - Broadwater MP, Shadow Minister for Tourism, for listening to a range of problems and ideas to support Kuranda. Until tourism is somewhat back to normal, the best way we can help, as locals, is to visit. Grab a coffee, an ice cream, some great artwork or jewellery. ... Locals supporting locals
18.01.2022 So excited! Very proud to launch the first episode in my series of conversations with Aussie icon Les Hiddins "Bush Tucker Man". I was so fortunate to be invited into his home for a fasincating chat about his early life as a Barron River resident. I absolutely love meeting people like Les on the campaign trail!... I hope you enjoy our first video chat and stay tuned each Friday for new episodes. See more
18.01.2022 Education is a key priority for the LNP and that's why we will: Deliver 3350 extra teachers Deliver 760 teacher aides Improve results by decluttering the curriculum and get back to basics, with a greater focus on English, Maths, and Science... Introduce phonics screening for year one students to boost literacy and to ensure no child falls behind. Improve classroom standards by air-conditioning every state school classroom in Queensland. A strong education system means a strong economy, and more local and secure jobs in Barron River!
16.01.2022 It’s World Cassowary Day . If you’re driving along the Kuranda Range please take it nice & slow - four new cassowary babies have been born in the past few weeks . Great work Dawn and Josette .
15.01.2022 Great Northern Clean Up this morning at Smithfield Sporting Precinct. The event is running until 11.30am so if you can pop down for half an hour it would be greatly appreciated . Fantastic work Rhonda Coghlan - Div. 8 Councillor, Cairns Regional Council
14.01.2022 To the police who have lost their lives in protecting ours, and to the police who continue to protect us every day, thank you . National Police Remembrance Day
12.01.2022 Spent a couple of hours this morning hanging out at Redlynch Central. Very special to catch up with Pauline Mills, a Redlynch resident who approached me back in 2008 when I first became a Councillor. She was concerned about graffiti in the area, and along with Jason Fox we formed the Redlynch Anti-Graffiti Group. End result; changes were made to Council’s Graffiti policy, the group set up a roster system of reporting graffiti and, thankfully .... years on, it has definitely i...mproved. Thanks Pauline .
10.01.2022 People don't feel safe in their own homes or out on the streets and quite frankly, it's time victims stopped feeling like they have less rights than criminals. On October 31st you'll have that chance because this Labor government has done nothing effective to fix the crime issue plaguing our city.
10.01.2022 Big congrats to Sharon Murphy and Stella Adams-Jones on the launch of their new cafe, Generation Coffee. Fantastic to see so many locals supporting your new venture! Well done...awesome coffee
09.01.2022 Take note. We need a change of government in Queensland.
08.01.2022 Queensland had the highest unemployment in the nation before covid. Change the government to get Queensland working again.
08.01.2022 This is not exactly what I’d planned for the campaign! A nasty infection in my leg has resulted in surgery and a few days in hospital getting the infection under control. Filling in time between jabs by phoning people and having a chat about what’s affecting them and what changes they want to see happen with the State Government. ... Their concern and love has been a beautiful tonic . Thank you .
07.01.2022 ***** UPDATE & NEWS FLASH ***** Stay tuned tomorrow. Les Hiddins "Bush Tucker Man" invites me into his home & gives me an insight into his early life as a Barron River resident. ... LEGEND The people you meet on the campaign trail! Who recognises this iconic Australian?
05.01.2022 I’ve spent a lot of time with local businesses over the years and am always happy to promote these great companies who work hard and provide amazing jobs for our locals. A big shout out to Ian and Gayle Williams and the team at Glasstech Qld. If you’re looking for glass products definitely put them on your list
05.01.2022 The toots, the waves, the big smiles - love being out with this group of supporters, including Senator Paul Scarr.
03.01.2022 The Stratford Dolphins Football Club is another one of our great community sporting groups in Barron River. I’m very pleased to announce that if elected to government, we will provide $26,000 to go towards their kitchen upgrades. It’s grassroots commitments like this that give local sporting clubs the chance to upgrade their facilities to cater for their members.
03.01.2022 Stop animal cruelty. I applaud the LNP’s strong stance on animal cruelty. Today we released details of what we are committing to do, which includes: - A new offence for leaving animals in hot vehicles (max penalty $250,000 compared to Labor’s $40,000)... - Specific offence for leaving a dog trapped in a car - Tougher laws for dog baiting - Improved offence provisions to help the RSPCA crack down on offenders who participate in dog or cock fighting The LNP will work with the RSPCA to strengthen offences regarding animal cruelty.
