15.01.2022 Vernon is in his release cage. He is nearly 500g so is only having 1 milk feed a day. Poor boy; he loves his milk.

From Possums & Allsorts The active ingredients in most rat & mouse baits are strong anticoagulants, that not only kill their intended victims but also wildlife; like tawny frogmouths, kookaburras, owls and possums! Who either eat the bait or eat the rats & mice that eat the bait. ... All animals that eat this bait endure excruciating pain until death. For rodents, this can take three to nine days [plenty of time to be eaten] and for possums, up to three weeks. They haemorrhage until they bleed to death in agonising pain and extreme distress. Joeys with mum will starve. The best way to control rats is to discourage them from taking up residence in the first place. Typically, conditions that support high rat populations are left until there is a real crisis at hand. Then the poisons are used or trapping employed to reduce the population, only to leave unaddressed the cause of the problem in the first place. Any effort to limit rat populations must be followed by taking the necessary stepsexclusion and sanitationto make sure the same problems never happen again. ~Humane Society. Humane prevention is better than ‘cure’. Rodent proof your home, seal off all points of entry. Remove possible sources of food, water and shelter. Maintain high levels of hygiene.

05.01.2022 Our newest baby western ringtail Possum was brought to us today. Her name is Lauren and she only weighs 51g. Even more surprisingly, she is fully furred! We don’t expect her to survive being so tiny ( the same as a chook egg) but she is in a humidicrib and has fed well so fingers crossed!!
