25.01.2022 Our Year 7 Student Ambassadors held a beautiful assembly yesterday for Remembrance Day. Many of the classes made poppies which were displayed under the flag poles. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning... We will remember them. For the Fallen Laurence Binyon
25.01.2022 Teacher and Teacher Librarian appreciation post. (Never underestimate the power of a good book and a caring adult). PS long post warning! When I was a kid in... year 5 at Linden Park Primary School my Dad passed away and my world collapsed. I was ten. My brother and sister were 13 & 14 and my beautiful Mum, a widow at 42... Our friends, family and school community were amazing and did everything they could to show us they cared - and we felt that love and still do... When I visited my old primary school for work today, I unexpectedly found myself drift back to a beautiful memory that was pivotal during that very sad time. Teachers matter and the powerful impact they (& any caring adults) can have on young people will often stay with a person for a lifetime. Here’s how they helped me... Just after Dad was gone, I felt lost and went inwards - probably the most obvious sign of my grief, given before that, I’m pretty sure I talked (way) too much. School was the only place I could take my mind off the grief and focus on other things for a bit...but the pain was still excruciating. The Teacher Librarian (and my beautiful year 5 teacher Mrs Schemezko) had my back and reached out daily in every (subtle) way they could. The librarian quietly came to me one day and asked if I wanted to lead a new school club called ‘Readers and Story Tellers’ where older children would read to younger children once a week at lunch time. I could choose the books I read and I could stop at any time. At a time when everything I thought I knew about life got thrown up in the air, I really needed a purpose - a joy - an escape. As you all know, when you go through something big, it’s hard to think about anything else. And what I needed back then is exactly what all the young people I see want and need. To know that someone has their back. To have a unique purpose. To have an escape and a place to go that’s straightforward, predictable and makes you feel like you know what you’re doing. To be unconditionally supported and accepted by caring adults. When you have these things, even if everything else is falling apart, you have a chance. A chance to recover. A chance to feel okay when you’re not okay. A chance to feel joy again.... In my hand you’ll see the first story I ever read as a ‘story teller.’ It was ‘The Velveteen Rabbit.’ These two beautiful teacher librarians (Caroline Wilson and Andrea K) enthusiastically found it for me today. Thank you also to Librarian Assistant extraordinaire Dionne for taking this photo. We had a beautiful conversation about how valuable their role is and how many layers there are in a school community and how it all pieces together to benefit the students. Life can be difficult sometimes...but people get you through. I was lucky to have people. I know not everyone does. Sometimes these incredible people know who they are. Often they don’t. So here’s to all those quiet achievers in school libraries, classrooms, canteens, sports lessons, drama, music, language and more who are often a greater source of inspiration and comfort than they’ll ever know or ever get credit for. They are hope and today I thank them, because reading that story and all the stories that followed was where my love of public speaking truly began. Where I got the chance to sit and think about what children might like me to read and how I could make it useful and interesting for them. So thank you Mrs Schemezko and our school librarian (whose name has slipped my mind because of my ageing ). Thank you to all the good eggs out there. Thank you readers for reading (those of you who haven’t fallen asleep yet). And if you’re still here, maybe you can tag someone who changed your life right here because they should know. Love, xx Madhavi Nawana Parker
