25.01.2022 I have been so inspired by Sydney-based centenarian Holocaust survivor Eddie Jakus touching memoir, The Happiest Man on Earth. Despite living through horrors of internment in Buchenwald and Auschwitz, Eddie is unswerving in his philosophy of kindness, friendship and hope. "Life can be beautiful if you make it beautiful Its up to you". Id like to put this book in the hands of as many people as possible! Click the link below to order a copy. booktopia.kh4ffx.net/y7Vz2
25.01.2022 Michael Robotham's gripping new book WHEN SHE WAS GOOD will be released in just over a week. Below is my review along with a link for you to order it from Booktopia. Scott. This is the much anticipated second book in the Cyrus Haven series, following on from the mega-bestselling Good Girl Bad Girl. Six years after young Evie Cormac was found neglected, hiding in a house’s secret wall cavity in the aftermath of a shocking murder, she is now an institutionalised ward of the s...tate, about to turn 18. Registered under a false name to protect her identity from the ruthless captors from whom she’d escaped, she’s terrified with due cause for her safety. Forensic psychiatrist Cyrus Haven is determined to protect her but unwittingly endangers her further when doggedly investigating the secrets of her troubled past and the truth of her origins. Evie’s character is keenly intelligent with a compelling pathos and mysterious allure that makes readers anticipate her travails in future books of the series with relish. Cyrus is an equally captivating co-protagonist whose own troubled backstory and integrity gives him independent appeal. As amply demonstrated in his 14 preceding psychological thrillers, Michael Robotham is one of Australia’s reigning kings of intricate and brilliantly plotted narratives. His multiple strands, inspired ‘red herrings’ and twists and turns guarantee to keep you turning the pages well into the night. He also ensures that each book contains adequate ‘backstory’ to ensure it can be read as a satisfying ‘stand-alone’. That having been said, one’s enjoyment of When She Was Good may be heightened by having first read its prequel. Bring on number three! https://booktopia.kh4ffx.net/mQvL7
25.01.2022 Mothers Day is almost here. My gift recommendation for Mum or Gran is the new offering from Sydney author Alexandra Joel, THE PARIS MODEL. Here is my review and link for ordering from Booktopia: https://booktopia.kh4ffx.net/bMP3m Outside Parkes, NSW in the 1940s, Grace Woods is a feisty and independent young woman quite at home on a horse and happy to take the reins (in more ways than one) on her fathers outback station. When she marries her high school sweetheart and newly... returned war hero, the future she thought she wanted seems assured. Life, however, never seems to work out the way one may dream it. In 1948, after dealing with multiple family/domestic dramas and thanks to a flair for modeling and fashion, Grace reinvents herself as Mademoiselle Dubois and finds herself invited to become a mannequin at none other than the Maison Christian Dior in Paris. A self-confessed Dior exhibition groupie and Francophile, Alexandra Joel knows her subject matter well. As former editor of Harpers Bazaar and the author of two books on the history of fashion, portraying the behind-the-scenes world of a famous French fashion atelier with authenticity and clarity is something that comes naturally to her. Her meticulous research delightfully brings to life the world of post-War Paris, its politics, economy and haute-socit - its nightclubs filled with the likes of Edith Piaf, Rita Hayworth, the Duchess of Windsor and the student Jacqueline Bouvier (soon to be Kennedy). As Grace tries to settle into her new life, she must simultaneously grapple with numerous challenges mysteries and adventures concerning her parentage, her marital status, espionage, love and motherhood. Filled with both heartbreak and glamour, secrets and joys, The Paris Model cannot help but entertain thoroughly. See more
24.01.2022 Well...one book everyone is talking about this week is Mary Trumps family memoir! Ive just finished it - in almost one sitting. My review and link for ordering it is below. TOO MUCH AND NEVER ENOUGH Mary Trump One would be hard-pressed to find a 2020 new-release title which has spawned more headline than this reveal all family memoir from the U.S. Presidents estranged niece, the daughter of his late brother, Freddy. Her openness and brazenly honest Prologue in which she... explains her reasons for lifting the lid on her family history, grips the reader immediately. Anyone who has ever scratched their head whilst watching Trumps news conference pronouncements and wondered what could possibly make him tick will find the rest of Mary Trumps expos equally spellbinding. In essence, the answer comes down to the way the Presidents father, Fred Trump Sr. led his life and raised his five children. A true sociopath albeit a high-functioning one Freds priority was money. He displayed no love for his offspring, played one against the other and instilled in them no appreciation for sympathy, empathy or charity. Their mother failed equally to teach them the values that most parents wish to engender in their children. Unlike Donald, whose real estate escapades and failure to re-negotiate bank loans led to his businesses declaring bankruptcy no less than six times, Fred never had any debt. He never gave away a dollar he didnt need to. All the children (particularly Donald) would do anything to earn his love and respect something which they sought in vain. Marys father was the first casualty of Freds despotic fathering. Forced to give up his desired career as a pilot, he was constantly put down and ultimately developed alcoholism and died of a heart-attack at just 42. Mary writes that her Uncle Donald is now under growing stress from the effort to keep us distracted from the fact that he knows nothing about politics, civics, or simple human decency. She further claims that he is fundamentally incapable of acknowledging the suffering of others and that to do so would be to associate himself with their weakness, a trait his father taught him to despise. Decrying his Presidency and what she sees as the death of American democracy, Mary will clearly remain off the family Christmas card list! She believes, however, that divulging the truth about her grandfather and her uncle as well as speaking for her late father is much more import than family loyalty something which she has never received from anyone but her mother and brother. Pre-election, the truth as she sees it is revelatory and - she hopes - will help rally American voters to deny him a second term. Whether or not she succeeds in that goal, her book is fascinating and compulsory reading for any political junkies. booktopia.kh4ffx.net/6JMj3 See more

21.01.2022 Todays new release suggestion is an engrossing memoir/Holocaust detective story by the mother of Jonathan Safran Foer, author of the bestselling EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED. My review is below. If you wish to order a copy, please use this link: https://booktopia.kh4ffx.net/JMxDQ I WANT YOU TO KNOW WERE STILL HERE ... Growing up in the Washington D.C. area, Esther Safran Foer and her brother were loved and nurtured by Holocaust survivor parents who never spoke about their past and the horrors they had experienced. Both the sole survivors of their immediate families, Ethel and Louis/Leibel Safran were products of bygone Jewish shtetl life in small Ukrainian villages. They married in Lodz, Poland (where Esther was born) just a few months after meeting. After three years in a DP camp, they were finally able to start a new life together in the United States. It was only when Esther was in her 40s that her mother revealed her father had been married before the War and that his wife and young daughter had been killed by the Nazis. Esther was flabbergasted at this bombshell news that she had had a half-sister. Louis had died when Esther was just eight years old, in circumstances never discussed. No one knew the name of his first child and no photograph of her survived. Esther, determined to find something to document her short life to prove that she had once existed, set out to follow the family trail and dig up some evidence to help her remember someone who had left no trace. How had her grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins met their fates? Who were the unnamed Righteous Gentiles in an unmarked surviving photo who had hidden and cared for her father when he had escaped the Trochenbrod village massacre? How had Louis really died when just 44? After tracking down and interviewing distant relatives in Israel and South America, Esther and her eldest son Frank embark upon a meaningful pilgrimage back to Ukraine with other Trochenbrod survivors and their descendants. Her novelist son Jonathan had already recreated a fictional Trochenbrod life in his bestselling novel Everything is Illuminated. Now, after painstaking research and her incredibly moving return to the birthplaces of both her parents, Esther is here able to reveal the true story of her familys past and how she miraculously unraveled the mysteries of their identities and fates. I Want You to Know Were Still Here pays appropriate homage to Esthers half-sister and many other relatives who, no doubt, are now looking down on her with pride and the knowledge that their family IS still here, keeping their memory alive and paying them the eternal respect they deserve. With each storys recounting, history was turning into memory, and memory into history she tells us in this intimate detective story, full of twists and turns culminating in a hugely gratifying emotional resolution that mandates a box of tissues by your side.

12.01.2022 Heres my review of a kids/young adult book for a change - a thoroughly enjoyable evocation of 1950s McCarthy era America. To order, please use this link: https://booktopia.kh4ffx.net/rmmAB RED MENACE Lois Ruby (Carolrhoda Books)... The best of stories for children and young adults often carry the power to educate and thoroughly entertain the mature adult reader. This is certainly the case with the latest offering from Lois Ruby, a former librarian and experienced writer for young readers with 20 books under her belt. RED MENACE revolves around the life of thirteen-year-old Marty Rafner, his family challenges and his perspective on many harsh realities of American life in 1953. Baseball-obsessed (specifically the Yankees) and studying for his upcoming bar mitzvah, Marty lives in suburban Kansas with his academic professor parents, Rosalie and Irwin. The Korean War is raging (his shell-shocked neighbour has just returned from active duty) and the national flames of obsessive communism fear are being successfully stoked by the terrifyingly powerful Senator Joseph McCarthy and FBI Director, J. Edgar Hoover. Why would this very adult political maelstrom possibly affect a 13-year-old boy more interested in Micky Mantle and the latest World Series than the tenets of democracy and freedom of speech? Well, Martys parents are left-leaning intellectuals who enjoyed a professional friendship with none other than Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, the convicted spies whose appeals are fast running out as they face execution by the electric chair in just two months time. Rosalie Rafners own loyalty to her country is being questioned. FBI agents are stationed outside the family home, watching their every move and a subpoena to appear in NY before SISS (the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee) seems horrifyingly inevitable. Theres even talk of her being deported to Poland where she was born. Marty regards the national zeitgeist as well as the threats closer to home with more than a young observers eyes. He has a grasp of the issues and, in fact, has the opportunity to become the catalyst for his familys very survival. Ruby paints a picture of the McCarthy era America of her childhood with evocative storytelling and rattling clarity. In doing so, she brings to life for young and old a disturbing chapter of American political history which should never be forgotten and which resonates alarmingly in 2020

08.01.2022 My next lockdown reading recommendation is the newly released uplifting memoir from journalist Shannon Molloy - FOURTEEN. Please use this link for Australian online ordering: https://booktopia.kh4ffx.net/1JQA9 My review is below.... Journalist Shannon Molloy always knew he wanted to get out of his small hometown in regional Queensland. He yearned to escape, not just because he had ambition and wished to see the world but because he was mercilessly bullied and bashed throughout his childhood, making his teenage years miserable despite the support of a loving mother and siblings. There was a place in the world for me, even if I didnt know exactly where yet.and for the first time, I felt as though I deserved to find that place, he writes. Fourteen is an unflinching month-by-month memoir of the year he was that age (2000), a pivotal time in his life as he slowly realised he was gay (despite initially convincing himself he was bisexual because that was easier to accept); when he toyed with the idea of ending his life; when he hatched a plan to escape his school nightmare by becoming an overseas exchange student and when he, ultimately, found the resilience, strength and determination to go on. It is hardly surprising that in an all-boys Catholic High School in a conservative country town, adolescents could be cruel, violent, unaccepting and ignorant concerning a sensitive boy with a distinct effeminacy. What IS shocking, however, is learning just how many adults teachers whose job it was to be not just Shannons educators but also guardians and protectors, could be equally as damning. The message of survival and resilience which shines brightly through the coming-of-age doubts and angst of Fourteen seems particularly germane to our Covid-19 times when it can be easy to fall into feelings of hopelessness and despair. As Shannon says, I had learned from my upbringing in Yeppoon you have to pull yourself up when you fall down. When speculating in his Epilogue on what he might tell his awkward 14-year-old self if he could go back in time, one thought was that unknown happiness is on the horizon. You will be fine. He now credits the person he is today - fair-minded, empathetic and passionate with elements of his teenage survival experience, as awful as it was. Though the books narrative spans just one year of a tortured young life, through the Epilogue, its more than gratifying for the reader to get a snapshot of the successes, triumphs and love experienced in his subsequent years. Whilst acknowledging the unswerving love of his family, Molloys ability - with hindsight - to accept and appreciate his past is the ultimate testament to his positivity and survival. As a beacon to staying power and to optimism, this touching memoir will serve as inspiration to any teenager (gay or straight) struggling to find their identity and path in this complex world. It should be added to all high school curricula reading lists. Scott Whitmont

03.01.2022 Some great news (below) just released by Lifeline! Please stop by to support this wonderful new venture for a marvelous cause! New Pop-Up Lifeline Book Shop to open on site once occupied by Lindfield Bookshop Our popular Pop-Up Book Shop at Roseville may no longer be with us, but were very excited to announce the opening next week of a new Pop-Up Lifeline Book Shop at 328 Pacific Highway, Lindfield. These premises were previously inhabited by the much-missed Lindfield Booksh...op, one of Sydneys most beloved book retailers. The old Lindfield Bookshop was an institution on the upper North Shore for 35 years, but it closed a year ago. The site has been empty since, and Lifeline H2H has just signed a 6-month lease to offer a massive range of high-quality second-hand books in a prime location. There will also be DVDs, CDs, vinyls, comics and computer games all at bargain-basement prices. Not only will Lindfield locals once again be able to buy books in a physical book store, but every purchase will help Lifeline H2H support others. The owner of the departed Lindfield Bookshop, Scott Whitmont, is delighted that a bricks-and-mortar book store will be opening once again on the site of his old business. Lifeline volunteers preparing the site for trade by next week have already had passers-by say how happy they are that another book shop will be opening in the neighbourhood. Interestingly, one of Lifelines book depot volunteers, retired teacher Margie Knight, once worked with Scott as Manager of the Lindfield Bookshop for two years, and will be volunteering in-store once the Lifeline Book Shop opens. Shes amused by the fact that her life has circled back to this site, and is revelling in her continued immersion in the world of books. As she says, Theres nothing like an actual book that you can hold and sniff, and see a real bookmark making its way through its real pages. Book Depot Coordinator, Michael Cleary, and the team of fantastic volunteers are working hard setting up tables and shelving, unpacking boxes and getting everything ready for opening to the public next week. Hes keen for people to know that: Theres plenty of parking nearby, including a council car park behind the shop, with laneway access directly to it and to the Pacific Highway. All 50+ categories usually offered at our Book Fairs will be displayed in this store. All fresh stock (nothing previously made available at the Book Fairs or the Roseville Pop-up) will be on sale. So, drop by our new Lifeline Book Shop in Lindfield next week from 10am Tuesday. Best of luck to the Lindfield Book Depot team, and heres to keeping bricks-and-mortar bookstores alive and well on Sydneys North Shore! Pop-Up Lifeline Book Shop 328 Pacific Highway, Lindfield Trading Hours: Tues-Sat 10am-4pm Sun 10am-2pm
