"It has taken me far longer to respond to you regarding your thesis proposal than intended. In fact, I read the document twice. It was a good read. But the real reason for two readings is that I failed to take good notes on the first read. First, this is a good read. It is historiography at its best. You really know about the art and science of history. It is a compelling, realistic assessment of what we mean by history. I thoroughly enjoyed your commentary because it has life and style. You show how the story carries history and how stories are both myth and fiction with a few facts thrown together to make a story. Truth has little to do with story. So, history novels may convey as much truth as history treatise. But more importantly, you grasp the notion that nations need stories fictions for being............. You make it clear that the "Superiority" not just of playing snooker or billiards is the issue. There is a superiority of breeding that lies at the core of the post dynasty treatment of your father......... You are a great writer. You need to get this story out to open the door for more good history writing that tells a better story about Australia and Australians than the ones we have."
