18.01.2022 WOMEN'S HEALTH WEEK l Orthopaedics Osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis. 1 in 3 women will suffer a broken bone due to Osteoporosis. But what is Osteoporosis, who can it affect and how is it diagnosed? It is a condition where the bones become more fragile which can lead to a higher risk of breaks or fractures. A small fall or simple bump can often cause a break in someone with Osteoporosis, and women that suffer from rheumatoid arthritis are at increased risk ...of developing osteoporosis. Women are more at risk of developing Osteoporosis than men, particularly after menopause and if you have other medical problems or a family history of Osteoporosis. If you are showing common signs or symptoms your GP may refer you for a bone density test which will measure the density of the bones in the hip and spine. What can we do to look after our bones? - Have 3 serves of dairy foods daily, or increase your intake of other calcium rich foods - Increase your Vitamin D and get out in the sun for short periods on the majority of days each week - Exercise regularly -weight bearing and resistance exercises are great to do at least 3 times a week. If you’re concerned, it’s best to speak with your GP regarding initial testing and diagnosis.
