14.01.2022 On this day in 1916 Taronga Zoo officially opened on the shores of Sydney Harbour in Mosman. Taronga Zoo was NSW's first public zoo and initially opened in 1884... at Billy Goat Swamp in Moore Park, on the site now occupied by Sydney Boys High and Sydney Girls High. The NSW Government granted 43 acres for the new bar-free zoo in Mosman. It was home to monkeys, seals, elephants and over 500 birds. https://www.records.nsw.gov.au//m/onthisday/7-october-1916

13.01.2022 Happy Caturday - it's International Cat Day! On 8 August every year, cat lovers across the world unite to celebrate this fascinating species. And just look a...t what we have in our archives! Seriously, could we ever have a more "catty" document than this?! National Records of Scotland bought this unusual image of a cavorting cat Christmas party as part of a larger lot at auction in August 2011. It comes from the workshop of Joseph Swain (18201909), and was published in the second supplement to the ‘Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News, Christmas Number’ on 6 December 1890. Swain was one of the most prolific English wood-engravers of the 19th century, best known from his engravings in ‘Punch’ magazine. There's a lot to spot in this drawing ... A band sits in the corner creating the evening’s entertainment beside a grand Christmas tree, beautiful felines stand fanning themselves by the wall, waiting to be asked to dance, and aristocats catch up on world events. In the centre of the floor couples struggle to dance whilst getting knocked off balance by over-excited kittens racing to the stage, and a harassed waiter carrying hors d’oeuvres is pounced upon by kittens trying to reach his tasty mice snacks. Elsewhere, little kittens play with their Christmas toys whilst young couples flirt behind the secrecy of the foliage. We do wonder what the conversation would be like ... Give us a if you're a cat person! #InternationalCatDay

08.01.2022 9th AUGUST 1851 . . . On this day, 9th August 1851, gold is discovered at Sovereign Hill, near Ballarat, in Victoria. Gold was discovered in Australia as early ...as the 1830s, but discoveries were kept secret for a number of reasons. To begin with, there were concerns that the discovery of this valuable resource would spark off unrest among the convicts. Further, land-owners did not want their properties being destroyed. The discoveries were usually made by farmers who did not wish to subject their sheep and cattle runs to a sudden influx of prospectors and lawlessness that would inevitably follow. However, as more people left the Australian colonies to join the gold rush in California, it became apparent that the outward tide of manpower would need to be stemmed. The government began to seek experts who could locate gold in Australian countrysides. Gold was first officially discovered in Australia in 1851 at Lewis Ponds Creek not far from Bathurst, New South Wales when Edward Hargraves, John Lister, William Tom and James Tom, found five specks of gold. Hargraves returned to Sydney to notify the Colonial Secretary and was rewarded with 10,000 and was appointed Commissioner of Crown Lands. The goldfield was named "Ophir", after the Biblical land of gold. The first payable gold in Victoria was at Clunes and Warrandyte by James Esmond at Clunes on 11 June 1851. At almost the same time, gold was also discovered at Anderson's Creek, near Warrandyte, by Melbourne publican Louis Michel. Both Clunes and Warrandyte claim to be the first town in Victoria where gold was found. While these strikes were significant, the real gold rush began when gold was discovered on 20 July 1851 at Mt Alexander, 60km northeast of Ballarat, and close to the town of Bendigo. The discovery was made by John Worley and Christopher Thomas Peters at Specimen Gully. In the same month that Victoria gained its independence from the NSW Colony, on 9th August 1851 gold was struck at Sovereign Hill near Ballarat. Nowadays, Sovereign Hill offers a re-creation of life on the goldfields and in a gold mining town. Pictured: The Gold Diggings of Victoria in Five Views taken on the spot by D. Tulloch, 1852.
