13.01.2022 A brain tumour could not kill Caitlin O'Brien but an act of male violence did. 31-year-old Caitlin's body was found by police on Tuesday at Gardenvale. Her p...artner Is charged with her murder. Just weeks ago doctors gave Caitlin the all clear following brain surgery. This is the saddest, most horrific thing I have ever had to write about an Australian woman killed. I cannot imaging the type of man one must be to kill a cancer survivor. Caitlin's death means 32 Australian women have been lost to murder and manslaughter this year. These deaths show that the more things change, the more things stay the same. In other words men are killing women more than once a week and nothing, absolutely nothing is changing. RIP CAITLIN O'BRIEN - YOU DESERVED SO MUCH MORE! See more

11.01.2022 This is Samr Dawoodi. Samr was stabbed to death in her home at Fairfield in NSW today. She is one of two women killed in Australia in the past 24 hours. Another woman is critical and a child is injured. Samr is the 54th of 55 women lost to murder, manslaughter or other unlawful acts in 2020. 25 children and 142 men have also been killed since January 1, 2020 (*see end note for information on these deaths). Samr was allegedly murdered by her husband. He is in police custody.... Her body was found during a welfare check. Samr - a refugee - was very new to Australia, having arrived here early in the new year from Syria. I cannot imagine what sort of hell this mum-of-three endured during the pandemic lockdown. And I cannot imagine the pain her kids are going through right now. They are living in a new country, dealing with all the problems that arise when English is not your first language and now they face a future without their mum while somehow coming to terms with their father being their mum's accused killer. This is the sad sad legacy of violence in our country. A mum killed. A dad in custody. And three children displaced for no other reason than an allegedly violent man was unable to hold himself to account and keep his hands off his partner. RIP SAMR DAWOODI! You can read more about Samr and other women and children killed at the Memorial to Women and Children Lost to Violence @ www.theredheartcampaign.org *I count and document every life lost to murder or manslaughter in Australia. I count victims regardless of their gender or their relationship to the perpetrator. This means not all the deaths I count are due to domestic violence - often women, children and men are killed due to other acts of violence including stranger violence and associate violence. I count all deaths regardless of perpetrator gender.

11.01.2022 Domestic Violence has no culture or religion. Victims are often afraid to speak up about the abuse they experience, and are left with no where to turn for help.... The month of May is Domestic Violence Prevention Month. We need to stand together and say #EnoughIsEnough. Domestic violence is not always physical. Domestic Violence can be verbal, psychological, emotional, sexual, and financial. It is heartbreaking to know there are so many souls suffering by the hand of those they love, or loved. Please spread awareness and do what you can to give support and love to all those who are victims of domestic violence, help be their voice! Seek professional support! Domestic Violence is a crime. It's based on power and control and a sense of control men have and ownership of women and their children and their surrounding, If you or know anyone is affected, struggling in any way please talk to a professional for support. You can call 02 9786 4404 Muslim Women Australia LINKING HEARTS Canterbury Bankstown Multicultural Family Homelessness Support Service. 1800 RESPECT - 1800 737 732 Domestic Violence Line 1800 656 463 Lifeline 13 11 14 Beyond Blue 1300 22 4636 Mensline 1300 78 99 78 Domestic Violence DV & Homelessness is a social issue that continues to concern us all. A whole of community responsibility is the best & only solution. let's not reinvent the wheel & let's find out what support services really exist in our community. There's so much support needed for those enduring DV & homelessness, men, women & children; For those of you out there, supporting victims of abuse, unless you’re a professional with expertise in this area of social services & support, Please, you must seek advice from experts who specialise in this very sensitive area; the specialists can help guide your efforts into new initiatives supporting DV victims. For our Muslim community leaders who are wanting to support women escaping DV, you may want to consider establishing men’s supported services. It may be better (in Islam) for women & children to stay in their own home while the perpetrator leaves into a supported professional service, where he gets full wrap around services he needs to deal with his issues and Not just Anger Management course to attend. Why is it that women are always seen as weak, when in certain situations, that’s beyond their control, they become vulnerable. Just because a woman is vulnerable does not mean she is weak. Women need to be supported in a religiously, culturally and socially appropriate service & the best model would be for her to stay with her children at home, while the man leaves & goes to a Male supported accommodation service.

10.01.2022 It is funny how things go full circle. When I was being interviewed for this article I told the journalist I loved doing articles for magazines because of the l...ongevity. I told her about how I read an article by Carrie Bickmore from The Project while I was waiting to see my Dr and I was resistant to tell her I was once again I was struggling, as I felt a sense of shame. Reading the article about Carrie's loss and bravery gave me the courage to speak up and ask for help, which led to a diagnosis. Now here I am nearly a decade later and Carrie is on the cover of the edition my story is in. I did this article for The Australian Women's Weekly because I know how important it is to speak up for those who can't speak up for themselves. I am lucky when I was homeless it was in a shelter, with food, water, supplies and staff whose job it was to keep me safe. This is not true of so many. Doing media is part of my pro bono work for Annabelle Daniel and the amazing team at Women's Community Shelters who run shelters for women like me who are forced into homelessness due to domestic violence. This is such important work and I do not like to think about what would have happened to me if there had been nowhere for me to go. #DFV #togetherwecan #payitforward

06.01.2022 This week in the Parliament of NSW I raised the ongoing issue surrounding mental services at Campbelltown Hospital. I have said it on countless occassions - our... dedicated and passionate staff can only do so much with limited resources and support. The absence of a clinical psychologist at the Birunji Mental Health Unit was just one example of services and resources falling well short of community expectations.
