25.01.2022 Always Was, Always Will Be. Always Was, Always Will Be recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. The NAIDOC 2020 theme was spotted in the Class 1 garden today!

25.01.2022 NAIDOC week begins today and Linuwel School is proud to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The 2020 National NAIDOC Poster, Shape of Land, was designed by Tyrown Waigana, a Noongar and Saibai Islander man. Tyrown’s artwork tells the story of how the Rainbow Serpent came out of the Dreamtime to create this land. It is represented by the snake and it forms the shape of Australia, which symbolises how it created... our lands. The colour from the Rainbow Serpent is reflected on to the figure to display our connection to the Rainbow Serpent, thus our connection to country. The overlapping colours on the outside is the Dreamtime. The figure inside the shape of Australia is a representation of Indigenous Australians showing that this country - since the dawn of time - Always Was, Always Will Be Aboriginal Land. 25.01.2022 A conversation with Mikhail! What is your role in the high school, what subjects do you teach, what are your areas of specialisation or main subject area? "My current role in the school is Camp Coordinator, assisting with camps and providing outdoor education opportunities with classes from 1 through to 12. My areas of specialisation are Science and Geography, and I hope to share this knowledge I have with classes as we explore our beautiful country. I will also continue to t...each a number of science main lessons this year in the high school. Over the last four years as a class guardian I have taught many subjects, including Mathematics, PDHPE, Design and Technology and Art." What led to you becoming a teacher at Linuwel? "A chance meeting with a Linuwel staff member during my final teaching placement led me to Linuwel. I met with Tracey and some other senior staff members and was taken on a tour of the school. I was immediately attracted to the beautiful setting of the school and the blending of its architecture and environment. The warmth, openness and passion of the staff I met further strengthened my attraction to the school. The next year I began my journey as a Class Guardian with Class 7." What is your background? "I have lived in Newcastle almost all of my life, originally near Lake Macquarie where I have many fond memories of exploring the Lake and the local environment. Up until I was 14 I attended a Steiner School, before we moved into Newcastle city where I completed the remainder of my schooling at a nearby Catholic school. After a gap year of travelling and working I began a Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management degree and the University of Newcastle. I worked in Sydney as a water treatment specialist, but after 2 years I was missing my hometown and searching for a more fulfilling vocation. I began I Masters of Education and the University of Tasmania, studying by distance while working as a barista." What are your interests and what are you passionate about? "When I am not at school you will find me at the beach or tinkering in the garden and shed. A passion for surfing has led me up and down the East Coast and beyond and fostered a love of the ocean. I enjoy camping and am always looking to immerse myself in wilderness and nature, finding new and interesting places. I enjoy making and creating, always looking to learn and develop new skills from sewing to boatbuilding."

23.01.2022 Here’s just a small selection of Class 10’s major craft/design projects. Each student kept a reflective journal on the process of the evolution of their idea and the process undertaken. 20.01.2022 A conversation with Teale Vanner, one of our staff members here at Linuwel. What is your role in the high school, what subjects do you teach, what is/are your area(s) of specialisation or main subject area? I specialise in Personal Development, Health and Physical... Education. I currently practice this with some Primary classes and most high school grades. What led to you becoming a teacher at Linuwel? I was fortunate to be placed at Linuwel as part of a university placement late 2019. Since that experience I have become excited and passionate about Steiner philosophy and the pedagogy involved. What is your background? I grew up near Emu Bay on Kangaroo Island, South Australia. I developed a deep respect for nature and the ocean at a young age and have accordingly developed my lifestyle. In my teenage years I became competitively involved with surfing which led me on an exciting career around Australia, and eventually the world. Through personal development and experience I discovered a passion for health and wellbeing, which led to an early retirement from competitive surfing and a keen refocus on my future as a PDHPE teacher. I hope to enrich the curriculum offered at Linuwel with my knowledge and experience. "Health is wealth."

16.01.2022 Class 2 enjoyed a mid-week camp this week to Ferndale camping area at the foot of the beautiful Barrington Tops. They pitched smaller tents for the first time, enjoyed the wildlife and soaked up the atmosphere of mountain areas before they will begin their Main Lesson on this topic back in the classroom.

14.01.2022 Our teachers and support staff are at school this week, busily preparing the classrooms and grounds for the beginning of the 2021 school year. We look forward to welcoming all our students back on Monday the 1st of February!

12.01.2022 A Gumbaynggirr story from the area that a few of our classes have recently visited on camp.

11.01.2022 Class 6 traveled north for their much awaited school camp. Darlington beach seaside, overcoming fears and challenges surfing the waves. The students loved exploring Dorrigo mountain, rainforest walking amongst nature’s wonders.

10.01.2022 Beautiful photographs from Class 5’s camp earlier this term. They hiked to the waterfalls within Dorrigo National Park - in awe of their beauty!

07.01.2022 Linuwel alumni, Adelaide Cowan. "I would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which I live, and pay my respects to Elders past, present, and emerging. Ginagay njawyn, ngaya yaam Adelaide. Ngaya yaam Gumbaiyngirr Worimi nyami. Ngaya ngayinggi Wonnarua, Maitland.... Ginagay njawyn, hey you mob, my name’s Adelaide. I’m a Gumbaiynggirr and Worimi woman living on Wonnarua Country now known as Maitland. I was lucky enough to be at Linuwel for my entire education, from Kindergarten until year 11. After year 11, with the encouragement of my wonderful teacher, I took some time off to explore dancing and expand my cultural knowledge. However, I’d always wanted to go to university so, in September of what would’ve been my Year 12, I took the STAT test and was accepted into Architecture at Newcastle University. Linuwel has always taught me that the arts were just as valuable as the sciences, and I’ve noticed that this way of thinking has really helped me in my degree which is the perfect balance of those two things. At Linuwel it was always very clear how important it is to respect nature and the cultures of the land, and this has stayed with me throughout my further studies. I’m currently the Indigenous representative for the School of Architecture at Newcastle and have been able to work with staff to make courses more inclusive of Indigenous Australians, and I am also part of a collective for Indigenous women in design called @deadly_djurumin, where we aim to help people understand how to design and live in a way that respects and celebrates the oldest living culture on Earth. Since the start of my degree, I’ve been a proud member of Career Trackers, a community for Indigenous Highschool and University students. Through them I’ve interned 5 times over the last 2 years with Cox Architecture. At Cox I have mainly focussed on transport, with my biggest project being the Western Sydney Airport. Outside of my degree, I’ve been focussing on culture. Linuwel gave me the opportunity to learn some key words in Gathang language growing up, as well as dreaming stories and protocols. To expand on that I’ve started studying my mob’s language and sharing bits and pieces of it online and at work for others to learn with me. My three years post-Linuwel have been filled with learning, creativity, and exploring my culture. I’m certain that everything I’ve achieved thus far couldn’t have been done without the values instilled in me at Linuwel, and the amazing support network I built there. Darrundang, thanks. Adelaide Cowan."

06.01.2022 Congratulations Class 6! Class 6 have completed their journey along the primary verandah and today the beginning of their new adventure in the high school was celebrated.

06.01.2022 Yum yum Kindy buns! Warm comfort on a cool and rainy day.

05.01.2022 Class 6 have begun the year with an Ancient Rome main lesson - first with the story of Romulus and Remus. In Roman mythology, Romulus and Remus are twin brothers whose story tells the events that led to the founding of the city of Rome and the Roman Kingdom by Romulus.

03.01.2022 Yesterday, last year’s Kindergarten class gathered in their garden with their families and Kindergarten teachers. Families formed a beautiful rainbow bridge under which the children walked towards Nigel, their Class 1 teacher. Each child presented Nigel with a flower and excitedly waved goodbye to their families and Kindergarten teachers, making the journey around the pond to their new classroom. Nigel will now guide these children, along with specialist teachers, through their primary years.
