The girls in the photo are - Left to Right: Carole Powell, Christine Stewart, Sue Kempton, Darlene Chaffey and Elvee Brisbane. The other photos show Theodore Powell and me making a new friend - obviously an entertainer from Tamworth Country Music Festival.. And the funny final picture is me Line Dancing! Hmm - think I need dancing classes.

25.01.2022 Congratulations Tasmanian Lions! This year you have had your own District for forty (40) years. 1 July 1980 was a very important day for the Lions of Tasmania. This was the day that Tasmania became District 201 T1. It was also the day that changes were made to Victoria.

Parading through Hyde Park (L-R) Multiple District 201 Secretary John Powell, Council Chairman Jeff Lawrence, International Director George Higgs, MD202 Council Chairman Bruce Caldwell and Multiple District 201 Treasurer Neville Tucker. The second photograph shows the flag of Papua New Guinea proudly borne by a Lion from PNG and leading the p Parade of Flags. This was Johns seventh Multiple District Convention.

23.01.2022 1987: Found this newspaper cutting from the Townsville Bulletin Wednesday May 6, 1987 of John Powell and me at the 35th Multiple District 201 Convention in Townsville. We were dining at the Townsville International Hotel.

23.01.2022 This FB page is a platform for John Powell and me (Carole Powell) to share memories of our life as members of Lions Clubs International Association and Lions Australia. John was the first full time employee of Multiple District 201 and commenced duty on 1 July 1973. He was first known as Council Secretary and then Executive Officer. John retired on 30 June 2001. During this time, along with approximately 800 District Governors, he created a very firm foundation for Lions..., Leos and Lioness to assist their local, state and national communities. Placing Lions Australia as the foremost Community Service group required him to meet with local, State and Federal Government personnel. Prior to Johns appointment, the part time position was being conducted, very efficiently, by Lion Geoff Laird, who was a successful business man in Adelaide. As the volume of work increased, the Council of the day resolved to appoint a full-time officer. John was very impressed with the work that Geoff was able to achieve on a part time basis. Geoff and John became firm friends. Geoff was most helpful with the transition. See more

19.01.2022 On 14 October 2001 John Powell became the third recipient of the CHRIS AUGUST MEMORIAL AWARD in recognition of Outstanding contribution and support to the Lions Clubs of District 201V6 and the Community. It was Certificate No 3. Christopher John August was born in Poland on 27 December 1911, and a young child, he migrated to Canada with his parents. He later became a Canadian citizen. He came to Australia in 1947, to assist in the set-up of Bruck Mill in Wangaratta. On ...a business trip to Sydney in 1955, Chris met a member of the Lions Club of Sydney, and he became interested in the Lions Clubs Organisation. On his return to Wangaratta, Chris gather together a few friends and business acquaintances and discussed the possibility of forming a Lions Club in Wangaratta. A Formation meeting was held in November 1955 and the Districts first Lions Club was chartered on 17 March 1956 with Chris August as the inaugural President. They later went onto form clubs in Albury, Benalla, Shepparton, Beechworth, Euroa, Chiltern and in due course more were formed. Chris achieved 42 years of Perfect Attendance. He passed way in Wangaratta on 8 January 1999. He will always be remembered with much affection and respect. He was the Patriarch of Lions in the District of V6. Note: The Bruck Mill is now Bruck Textiles and specialises in Protective and Military textiles. It is worthy of your time to check their website. See more

19.01.2022 Multiple District Convention 1990 at Perth the social function was Fancy Dress, so John Powell dressed as Zorro and I dressed as Cher! The final social event of the Convention was an opportunity for the Officers of Multiple District to relax.

16.01.2022 The Governor General, Sir Zelman Cowen officially opened the 1981 Multiple District Convention in Canberra. He was an absolutely charming gentleman. The photo below shows Sir Zelman chatting with Council Chairman Ambrose Depiazzi (centre) and side profiles of PID Ken Lentfer and Marcia Lentfer.

14.01.2022 This is the invitation to our Lions Down Under party at the 80th Lions International Convention in Philadelphia, PA. We had a very small contingent of Australian Lions, Lioness and Leos. John Powell and I had to find a suitable location (on arrival in the city). We lunched at several places to sample the food and service of each venue. The Irish Pub was our choice - where we had the entire first floor. It was a very fun event!

14.01.2022 Mount Gambier was the site for the 1983 Multiple District 201 Convention. Convention Chairman was Eric Roughana who did an outstanding job. This was the first non-metropolitan convention ever held! Council Chairman was PDG Lance Gliddon. It is interesting to note that driving to the convention we had to drive through the fire ravaged pine forests and countryside. Eric Roughana was accredited with the concept of sinking burnt logs in the surrounding lakes - in order to save the timber. The scheme was extremely successful - long term.

13.01.2022 2003 Families of sick and injured children will be able to relax in comfort thanks to the generosity of Lions Clubs in the Hunter. The Clubs have raised $33,000 to purchase furniture for the new Ronald McDonald Family Room soon to be constructed at The John Hunter Childrens Hospital. The Ronald Room, funded and operated by Ronald McDonald Charities, will be the first of its kind in Australia. It is a place where local families can unwind and escape the pressures of the ...wards while utilising kitchen, dining, lounge and shower facilities. The funds were raised through special events throughout the Lions District. It has been great to get the clubs together to do a special project, for only the second time in the Newcastle region for Lions International, said John Hayes, Past District Governor for Newcastle. The Ronald Room is one part of a bold new project that is transforming a courtyard at The John Hunter Childrens Hospital into a playful haven for sick and injured children and their families. The other aspect of the project is the construction of a Starlight Express Room, which will provide a sanctuary for sick kids, featuring games, audio-visual equipment, performance space and entertainment by Captain Starlight and Starbright. (Taken from Talkabout Health, June/July 2003 Page 7). Photo shows L to R: Lions Ian Russell, Frank Holden, Executive Officer Retired John Powell, Garry Patten, Lioness Marilyn Hearn, Doris Dumbrell, Owen Johnson, John Donn, Executive Officer Ronald McDonald House Ross Bingham, PDG John Hayes and UNKNOWN. Perhaps someone can assist us with this unknown person! See more

12.01.2022 August-September 2001 The Lion: AU REVOIR to E.O. JOHN POWELL. Editors Footnote: His service was also recognised elsewhere during the convention, when he was awarded the International Presidents Leadership Medal. It was the only one awarded in Australia this year. In presenting the medal, International Director PDG Barry Palmer said it was rare for Lions International to award the medal to a person that was effectively an employee of the organisation. They just dont do it, he said. it just goes to show how much Johns work over the past 28 years has been appreciated. Note: Dr Jean Behar, International President 2000-2001 awarded the International Presidents Leadership Medal In Recognition of Your Distinguished Leadership.

11.01.2022 This article was published in the Illawarra Mercury on Friday 3 April 1998. Wollongong was going to make a bid for the 2001 Multiple District Convention. MD Chairman David McKenzie, Executive Officer John Powell and PCC Maurie Chapman (from Wollongong) did an inspection of the Wollongong Entertainment Centre and other venues to ascertain the suitability of the city.

09.01.2022 Multiple District Conventions were certainly more colourful in the past! PDG Neville Elphick, Chairman of Lions Mint Committee and his friends educating us on the benefits of Lion Mints during the Plenary Session during the 1983 Multiple District 201 Convention at Mildura. Well done, Neville and his Dancing Girls. Also pictured is PDG Neil Williams and International Staff Representative PDG Bob Allen attending the Monday night Banquet. You will of course, remember that PDG Neil was the voice of Lionel de Mint.

08.01.2022 Congratulations to John Powell - who has just received a lovely certificate celebrating Fifty Five (55) years as a valued member of Lions Clubs International. We celebrated this milestone in 2019 - takes a little time for the paperwork. It is particularly pertinent at this time because this is internationally - Week of the Volunteer

05.01.2022 An amazing Lion and Administrator!

05.01.2022 Our lovely friend from Arizona, District Governor Jack Jumper, District 21C 1987-1988 gifted John and me with his personal Bolo ties. The Arizona Lions had a tradition of using traditional Indian figures for their pins. We have an amazing collection.

05.01.2022 2006 Walk for an Aussie Kid at Brisbane was a huge success. We also had Hart Walker Races and the kids just loved it. Of course, there were many prizes and it was such fun. The photos show Australian Lions Childrens Mobility Foundation (ALCMF) Chairman Ray Dix and District Governors Rob Johnson and Des Sawyer. Also, Trustees Carole Powell, Beverly von Stein and Helen Maunsell. Thanks to The Lion October-November 2006.

03.01.2022 The recent passing of Lion Max Tresise closed the chapter on quite a remarkable Lion. The late Lion Max wanted to recognize his famous Father, Lion Bill Tresise for his wonderful work as the Founder of Lions in Australia in 1947. Lion Bill was appointed by Lion Melvin Jones to form Lions Clubs within Australia. Lion Max decided that the best, and most effective way, of recognizing this outstanding feat was to author a book LION BILL - W.R. Bill Tresise M.B.E. His journ...ey to establish Lions in Australia. Lion Max honoured me by inviting to write the Forward of this publication and I was delighted to do so. Interesting to note that this book was given to Lions who have attained fifty (50) years of membership in Lions Clubs International within the Multiple District. (This no longer happens.) I was appointed to the position of Council Secretary in 1973 and remember very well, Lion Bills last public appearance which was at the 23rd Multiple District Convention conducted at Brisbane in May 1975. Lion George Higgs (later to become International Director) was the Convention Chairman. I recall Lion Bills final speech as being most inspirational. Lion Bill died on 15 June 1975. See more
