20.01.2022 2020 SCREENING EVENTS SINCE COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS EASED With the travel restrictions lifted within WA the Lions Cancer Institute was able to resume its program of skin screening in the mainly country area’s in August. The screening teams commenced by locating the coach down to Esperance, from where screenings were conducted at Salmon Gums, Esperance (4 days over two weekends), Albany, Westonia and Merredin, followed by Kununoppin and Wyalkatchem.... Metro area screenings were at the Community Sports Ground in Jandakot, and most recently at Parliament House in West Perth on October 21st. Local Lions hosted and assisted at Esperance, Albany and Jandakot. Organisation’s such as Rotary, Men’s Shed and CRC arranged the events at the other locations, for which we are extremely grateful. The total number of people screened in the nine locations was 839. Of these 142 were referred by our experienced screeners for further investigation or treatment by their GP, with 127 of these lesions considered to possibly be life threatening. Our statistics indicate that 28% of the people seen had never been screened before. ALL LESIONS SUSPECT ONLY UNTIL PROVEN BY FURTHER INVESTIGATION The pictures show the team (from left, Kylie Laverty, Pauline Dilley, Wyalkatchem Rotarian Jan Trenorden, Trish and Phil Chinnery), at Wyalkatchem, and MLA Sean L‘Estrange speaking with LCI Director and Screener Lion Garry Irvine at the Parliament House event after being screened.
18.01.2022 Presentation of Dedicated Service Award to Lion June Walker As Lion June was unable to attend the Lions Cancer Institute Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, I made it my business to visit her at her home recently and present the Award in recognition of her many year’s service as a Volunteer Screener, and Director of the Institute since 1998. June is slowly recovering from chemotherapy treatment, at home with her cats. She has had to withdraw from screening work and as a Director o...n the LCI Board. We look forward to her recovering soon.

10.01.2022 As we all know, we are in the midst of an unprecedented episode of uncertainty about Coronavirus and the situation is changing almost daily. In a measure to safeguard public health and the health of our dedicated community members and their families who run and attend these events we have made the difficult decision to cancel all of our upcoming screening events, for the time being. It is too early to say when and if we can reschedule. Hopefully we will be able to resume in ...the near future. The decision has not been made lightly; however, we know from the experts that preventing people interacting prevents infections and therefore we are doing whatever we can to stop the spread of this deadly virus. The Lions Cancer Institute acknowledges the importance of skin cancer detection however, we cannot in good conscience allow a situation to occur that may facilitate the spread of the Coronavirus. 03.01.2022 After a long stand down due to Covid-9, we have recommenced our screening program from today. Lions John Osborne, Rob Garratt and Garry Irvine, with new screener Janice Cuming have started off this morning on the long trip to Esperance. They will be joined in Esperance by Rob Fitzpatrick and travel up to Salmon Gums to screen tomorrow. A full weekend of screening will follow at Esperance, organized by the Lions Club of Esperance members.... Safe trip guys, let's hope we can continue our program of 15 locations through to end of November through the South West and part of the Northern Wheatbelt without interruptions this time.
01.01.2022 Lions Cancer Institute Inc. (WA) Volunteers Appreciation Dinner 2020 Some 44 invited guests arrived at Technology Park Function Centre in Bentley last Tues. Nov. 17th to enjoy a 3 course meal with drinks to allow the Board of the Lions Cancer Institute to thank the volunteers who give much to ensure that the research and the screening events continue for the benefit of all West Australians. All who attended the evening reported their enjoyment, Secretary Bill Crosthwaite wa...s the master of ceremonies and carried out the role with expertise as per the program. Chairman Phil Chinnery gave a Report and expressed his thanks to all the Volunteers, as did the Business Development Director Garry Irvine. The Chairman made a number of presentations to volunteers who had contributed to our annual screenings June Walker (many years Director and Screener), PDG Colin Beauchamp, AM (Past Chairman and 30+ years Screener) Colin’s wife Sue Goddard (long time Screener and Admin.), Fitz Cass from Kwik Kopy (many years of service and advice on printed material), Mary Austin (many years Director & Screener), Liz Clarson (Development of LCI Business Plan), Robin & Peter Chinnery (raised money for LCI at their Xmas Lights in Busselton) , Meg Bradford-Seeley (many years’ service as Screener) and Trish Chinnery (Admin, Donor of a Defibrillator). A highlight was the Presentation of a Progressive Melvin Jones Fellowship, the highest level of Award in Lionism, to PDG Neil Saunders for his excellent support over many years as Treasurer of the Institute. Neil continues his contribution in that role as well as other areas of administration as a Director. Neil’s contribution is enhanced by the support he has from Dot who also contributes to the work of the Institute and was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation. The evening concluded with a few humorous stories around our visitations to regional and country areas and around the raft of very interesting characters we get to see and help. The stories were most acceptable for the gathering that evening but of course remain a discreet distance from the readers of this article.
01.01.2022 Skin cancer does not discriminate. Skin cancer does not discriminate. Check your skin regularly, if you do notice changes, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have skin cancer but it does mean that you should visit your GP to have them looked at further.
