19.01.2022 Peter Bray AM Last Sunday 16 August 2020, Lions Club of Queanbeyan lost one of its much loved members when former QPRC Councillor Peter Bray AM died in Queanbey...an Hospital. For many years Peter ran the Charity Book Fair in Queanbeyan until in 2018 he approached our club to take over his stock of used books and helped us set up Lions Community Bookshop in Monaro Street, Queanbeyan. With his extensive network of contacts in the community he was able to arrange supply of a suitable shop front, unused shelving from the Library and a beneficial lease of shop fronts from Queanbeyan Leagues Club. The Bookshop has been very successful and is now recognised as the best second hand bookshop in Queanbeyan and further afield. Over $45,000 has been raised for charities and agencies since opening in November 2018.

The Lions woodcutting team got to work and cut, split and delivered 3 tonnes of wood for the benefit of SA Police and Australian Defence Force members who are staffing the Covid control locations along the Lower South East section of the state border. The control staff are finding the long night shifts particularly cold and were appreciative of the dry fire wood. Lions have offered a follow up delivery. 15.01.2022 Pambula-Merimbula Lions Club had their first face to face meeting since the start of the pandemic. PIP Barry Palmer joined us by video to present Lion Bill King the Barry J Palmer award for all his hard work for childhood cancer research. Lion Robyn Bedford was presented with an MJF and JD Richardson awards, Lion Lyn Matthews was also awarded an MJF and Lion Malcolm Gaeth awarded an Order of Merit Medal. It was also an opportunity for us all to celebrate Lion Bob Beasleys 80th birthday - congratulations to all.

15.01.2022 Sometimes we Lions think that what we do is not appreciated this story may change your mind two members from the Pambula-Merimbula Lions help out a fire affected resident Well Done Rick and Peter. Today Peter & I had a great day and felt really good after we chatted for quite a while to Stefan over a cuppa he had made for us. That was after we had unloaded all the tools & assembled the SS workbench. Stefan was very excited about all the gear & most appreciative for what had b...een donated to him. He was like a child unwrapping presents at Christmas. We found his little patch no worries, deep in the bush, his lovely home that he had built on the hilltop was just a skeleton, everything charred. Stefan was a Myotherapist and originated from Germany. He was an MD and had a library of medical books, naturally all destroyed. He told us quite a bit about himself, he has had a very interesting life. Stefan is now 70, but very active. I think the task of re building is still a bit daunting to him, however he seemed to still have a very positive and determined attitude and very grateful for what people have done for him. He gave us a stubbie each of James Squire Four Wives Pilsner in appreciation. No doubt I will visit him again some time. It was a pleasure helping such a nice man. We hope you like the pics. # 1 & 2 In keeping with social distancing, measured out our 1.5m separation !!!! # 3 Val would agree, probably Peters best angle. I could hear him saying some Hail Marys. # 4 & 5 Job completed and Stefan very grateful. You will notice in the background the remnants of Stefans home. His new timber posted shelter is made of Stringy Bark from his own property which has been cut & stripped clean of burnt bark.

13.01.2022 Our Reading Action Plan is a wonderful program to encourage reading with young children. Thank you Queanbeyan Lions for supporting this District Project.

13.01.2022 Lions Australia is pleased to have adopted Disaster Relief Australia as one of our key projects. Disaster Relief Australia (formerly known as Team Rubicon) brin...gs military veterans, emergency responders and motivated civilians together to volunteer their time to assist with emergency and disaster relief operations. This not only helps communities devastated by disasters, but it also helps Australian veterans find purpose through community service. Lions members are often the first to respond during times of crisis, as was seen in the 2019/2020 Black Summer bushfires. This partnership will be of significant benefit to both organisations - allowing veterans to get involved in more community projects, and assisting Lions clubs with more trained emergency responders in times of disaster. 05.01.2022 It was that time of the year when Bega Lions Club hand out donations to several groups in the community and let them know that we are more than happy to be of s...ome assistance to their worthy causes. Some of the donations made this year are Bega VRA $1000 for putting up and taking down of the Santa Claus decorations in the Bega Shopping area $500 to Bega Police Citizens Youth Club to assist with youth training $5500 to BlazeAid for fencing fencing materials $5000 to Lions NSW fire Appeal $5500 to Lions District Governors Fire Appeal $500 to Teen Clinic for hand sanitizers at local shopping centres As well as support to local schools $1500 to University of Wollongong towards nursing scholarships $500 to TAFE for support to an apprentice In total our donations amount to $22780 These funds were raised despite the challenges of Bush fires, floods and COVID 19 Fund raising has given us some challenges this year as all of our events have had to be put on hold. Not only did the club support the financial demands of the community but we also carried out support work with fire relief in Bega. The Club was directly involved in delivery of 25 truck loads of hay to farmers in the area and assisted with several other convoys of hay from the Lions Club of Pakenham with their Need for Feed programme Pictured are Lion Tony Sturt presenting a cheque to Peter Cross from PCYC and Bega Lions Club President Keith Underhill presenting a cheque to Jane Odelle from Bega VRA See more
