23.01.2022 September 21st is World Alzheimer's Day. A day to think about the future where our family and friends do not lose the cherished memories they have made througho...ut their life. We need your help to prioritise Alzheimer’s research in the hope of finding a cure for this insidious disease. Workplace giving is a great way to support our vital research. You can do this by making a regular tax-deductible donation to us through your employer’s payroll system give as much or as little as you like! Your donations are pre-tax, so your taxable income is reduced! Once you’ve signed up, you don’t need to do anything. Even the recordkeeping is taken care of it’s recorded on your payslip and you receive a tax receipt at the end of the financial year. Regular donations are vital in funding our research to bring us one step closer to an Alzheimer’s free world. By donating through workplace giving, you can make your money go even further! If your organisation doesn’t have a workplace giving program, send us an email at [email protected] and we can assist you further! #WorldAlzheimersDay

21.01.2022 KNOWING THE SIGNS: The early detection of Alzheimer's is vital, and as research develops we are able to use tools that can diagnose this disease decades ahead of any noticeable symptoms. Despite these great strides in research and early detection, it is still important that we understand these symptoms to ensure correct diagnosis is made, and that the highest quality of care is available to be provided. Thank you to the Alzheimer's Association for the infographic!

20.01.2022 RECOGNISING ALZHEIMER'S Over the coming weeks, we will be running a short series on what are considered to be the '3 main stages' in Alzheimer's disease. Today we are taking a brief look at what is known as the 'middle stage' also known as "moderate Alzheimer's disease." In this stage, thinking and memory continue to deteriorate but many people will still be somewhat aware of their condition. People in the middle stage of Alzheimer's disease need help with many daily tasks.... As always, it is important to consult your local physician to obtain a referral, as this is crucial for any formal diagnosis of this disease.

17.01.2022 On The Couch: with Professor Ralph Martins (Part 3) We welcome Professor Ralph Martins as he joins us again for part 3 of this new series which takes an in-depth look into some commonly asked questions surrounding Alzheimer's disease. In part three we discuss how there could be potential links between the Covid-19 virus and Alzheimer's disease, and how some key markers in both these cases share some commonalities.

14.01.2022 As we manage our way through this pandemic, some families are going above and beyond to accommodate and care for their loved ones. Jason van Genderen made this heartwarming gesture for his 87-year old mother, who is also suffering from Alzheimer's disease. A great feel-good story for the week!

12.01.2022 Music can be a powerful force in the lives of those living with Alzheimer’s disease, and it has always been a huge part of the lives of Oscar-winning actor Loui...s Gossett, Jr. and singer-actress Ana Golja, stars of new film The Cuban. 11.01.2022 New blood test research for diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease shows promising results 23 April 2020 A new study in the Lancet Neurology has shown that blood phosphorylated tau 181 may be a promising biomarker for Alzheimer’s disease. This is based on a diagnostic performance and prediction modelling study using data from four prospective cohorts. Read the full paper here or download the PDF.... According to the paper the blood p-tau 181 assay has the potential to be incorporated into clinical practice as a rapid screening test to identify or rule in Alzheimer’s disease pathophysiology and to guide therapy and clinical management of patients with suspected neurological disorders (as being positive on the blood test would give you access to randomised clinical trials and eventual disease-modifying therapies). Professor Serge Gauthier, MD, member of ADI’s Medical and Scientific Advisory Panel (former Chair), said: This blood test allows for a reliable measurement of a protein that is a key factor in the pathophysiology of Alzheimer’s disease. A validation study of its clinical utility will be done by participating investigators, many of which are based in countries with ADI members. This important finding has been made possible by participants in observational cohort studies who should be thanked for their dedication and interest in finding new diagnostic tests and treatments for Alzheimer’s disease. Paola Barbarino, ADI’s Chief Executive, said: Such welcome news and research progress - we truly look forward to the validation studies. The global Alzheimer’s community is awaiting the day we have a simple, practical and scalable test as the benefits will immeasurable to diagnosis and then to accessing post diagnostic support.

11.01.2022 On The Couch: with Professor Ralph Martins (Part 2) We welcome Professor Ralph Martins as he joins us again for part 2 of this new series which takes an in-depth look into some commonly asked questions surrounding Alzheimer's disease. In part two we go into some detail about an exciting piece of new technology that is making it's way to Western Australia (with massive help from the Lions Australia and Lions Clubs International Foundation) that will have further implications in how Alzheimer's disease and other diseases of the brian are diagnosed.

10.01.2022 Research presented today at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference found that ApoE-e4, the gene with the strongest impact on Alzheimer’s risk for ...White, European-descended populations, appears to have a significantly weaker effect in some Latin American populations. This suggests testing positive for ApoE-e4 may not mean the same for Alzheimer’s risk across racial/ethnic groups. #AAIC20 See more

07.01.2022 During World Alzheimer’s Month, the Australian Alzheimer’s Research Foundation will be hosting weekly webinars to bring awareness to Alzheimer’s disease and the... research work that will hopefully provide a better future for those at risk of developing the disease. There will be an opportunity for attendees to ask questions and each session will be recorded, so if you are unable to join the live webinar, you can watch it later at a time that is convenient to you! Visit our website to see our full webinar schedule for September and register today! https://alzheimers.com.au/webinars/

02.01.2022 This time last month, Professor Ralph Martins joined Lions Australia for a webinar detailing important information regarding the 'Early Diagnosis and Reducing the Risk of Alzheimer's'. If you haven't already, you can view a replay of this webinar in the link below!
