25.01.2022 The Gateway Sanctuary was an idea that was originally designed by a Leopold student from Geelong High School, and then put forward to the Bellarine Rural City by the Lions Club of Leopold. To see this mother swan and her cygnet looking so healthy shows that this is a really good environment for our local birds and animals. Watch out for snakes, particularly red-bellied black snakes and copperheads. If you do not disturb them, they will not disturb you. Photos by Lion Trevor Ffrost.

24.01.2022 Three of our Lions were honored by Lions International for long years of service. The presentations were made by District Governor Elect Lion Tom Blair. Members were John Greenwood, Ian Hall and John Mitchell.

24.01.2022 HOW EXCITING!!!!! The Lions V District Cancer Foundation, with the generous support of Lions Clubs throughout Australia, has officially launched its mobile ski...n cancer screening van at Government House in Victoria today, by the Governor of Victoria, The Honourable Linda Dessau AC. The President of the Victorian Parliament Lions Club Richard Riordan MP - Member for Polwarth, joined Lions Clubs International, PDG and Foundation Chair Bruce Hudson, V2 District Governor, Delwyn Seebeck - 2020/2021, the Governor of Victoria Her Excellency Linda Dessau AC, and fellow Parliament Lions member Anthony Carbines MP, for the launch of the Lions V Districts Cancer Foundation mobile Skin Check and Awareness Unit. A major project funded entirely by donations and hardworking volunteers from across Victoria. The van will provide free skin cancer checks, especially to people in rural and remote areas, catering to those who have limited access to specialist skin care professionals. 23.01.2022 The Lions Club of Leopold has now reached, and passed the target for the Cemetery project. If you are still interested, please send your name to the club and, if the project is enlarged, we will contact you to take your contribution. Thanks to all contributors, and to all those who are still showing interest. Other than indicating interest, we have now closed contributions.

23.01.2022 On Thursday 11th March the Lions Club of Leopold celebrated 35 years since Charter. Guests were Danielle Gumina and Hearing Dog "Honey" and Deputy Mayor, Trent Sullivan and his wife. Lion John Paice was presented with a Melvin Jones Fellow Award, the highest that our club gives. John has offered many years of service with three separate Lions Clubs. Pictures tell part of the story with more to follow. Lion Maria Baade also inducted a new member, Maggie Clarke, and led the talk on Hearing Dogs as the District Chairman involved in this project.

22.01.2022 The Lions Club of Hamilton has made the local press by donating a ventilator to the Hamilton Hospital. Here is what was printed in the paper. The Hamilton Lions Club has contributed $12,000 to the purchase of a new ventilator for critically ill patients at Hamilton Base Hospital.... The Club was aware that the Hospital’s existing ventilators needed replacing and was keen to assist with the purchase a new ventilator for our local hospital. The new ventilator is valued at $41,000 and is more advanced, versatile and easy-to-use and quickly assesses and responds to a patient’s changing condition and is a critical piece of equipment. It also means that the Hospital has a greater capacity to cope with any local COVID-19 outbreaks. Lions Club President, Francis Pekin said the contribution of $12,000 included $6,000 from the Australian Lions Foundation and a further $3,000 from the District 201V2 Charitable Fund. We are very proud to be able to assist with the purchase of this much needed ventilator, particularly in the current environment, when they are so essential to combat the effects of the COVID-19 virus, Mr Pekin said.

21.01.2022 Graffiti is a societal curse, perpetrated by troubled intellects, suffering frustrations or inferiority complexes. They probably deserve sympathy or pity, but they cause society so much cost and loss of civic aesthetic. Society, as a whole, needs to nominate them to authority for their own good. In these photos, one of our most active Lions is in action removing local graffiti in Leopold. The Lions Club has just approved a further budget amount to help pay for the removal chemicals. Have a look at the photos.

20.01.2022 Lions Cakes are available all year round, and make a good healthy bite while isolating from COVID-19. Eat them as they are, heat them in a microwave and pour warm custard over them as a sweet. No matter how you use them, they are delicious, and the profits support Lions Charity works, or Community work, such as purchase of chemicals to remove graffiti. Prices are 1Kg $13, Puddings $13, 1.5Kg $17. Order via email at [email protected] or from mobile 0438501945. Contactless delivery in Leopold, and payment at BSB 633000 and Account 137623286

19.01.2022 We thought you should be able to see some more photos of the Melvin Jones Award, the Induction and Honey doing her thing. John Paice was shocked and humbled to find himself the recipient of a Melvin Jones, but a really well earned one over many years, both in and outside of Lions.

18.01.2022 The Lions Club of Leopold celebrated it's 34th birthday (k/a Charter Anniversary) at the Peninsula Hotel, where we were lucky enough to have as our guest speaker, Past International Director Tony Benbow, and to present the toast to Lions International, Councillor Jim Mason. Tony was ecstatic to be asked to re-induct our very popular past member, Jacinta Evans. Welcome back Jacinta.

13.01.2022 We are about to update our Lions Shed (down at the Leopold oval complex) by putting in a new wider, motor operated door, and concreting the floor of the equipment portion of the shed. Funding is courtesy of Leopold branch of the Bendigo Community Bank #Bendigobankleopold who have made a grant available to us.Here are photos of our now messy club rooms,. and some of our Lion members at work.

11.01.2022 The Lions Club of Leopold and the Uniting Church members provided masses of pancakes for the students at Leopold Primary School on Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day). The pictures show the team after the children have gone into school.

10.01.2022 Our newest Lion, Trevor Ffrost, brought to the attention of the club that this community minded young man had cleaned up a lot of glass from the Bellarine Highway in Leopold (that probably the tow drivers had missed). The Lions Club determined that this young man needed to be found, and presented with a Certificate for Community Service, and a $25 voucher that can be spent anywhere. He turned out be Tom Donlen, part of a community minded, responsible family, with the best possible community ethic and spirit. Congratulations Tom. Well done. Well earned.

09.01.2022 The sad news is that due to COVID-19 we have put the club into a suspended state for at least two months, and have ceased production of the Leopold Local for at least April and May. The good news is that some of our members paid a visit to Queenscliff/Point Lonsdale DG visit night not long before the world turned upside down, and here are some of the photos. Our executive will still be meeting regularly via Skype, and we will keep contact as often as possible with all of our members. Take care. Stay safe. Remain isolated for the sake of everyone.

09.01.2022 Look out for our Lions Club volunteers at the Gateway Centre collecting for the Bushfire Appeal, and remember that 100% of money collected from the public is passed on. Our members pay via their dues for any administration costs. Pictured are Lions Anny Smith and John Greenwood hard at work. Already $1300 donated today, Wednesday 8th January alone. Thanks a heap Leopold. Update to 14th Jan. The figure is now over $4,000.

09.01.2022 Lions club members were still at work this week removing graffiti (while exercising social distancing) from a number of Leopold businesses. The perpetrators, when interviewed, will face fines of over $1600 each for breaching COVID-19 rules. Probably some poor parent will have to "cough up". It is sad that this is the ultimate expression of intellect displayed by the perpetrators. Here you see Lions removing some of the graffiti.

08.01.2022 The latest project of the Lions Club of Leopold is an imaginative shelter at the Leopold Cemetery. Now for those of you who use the rail trail, you will see that these photos are of a shelter near Station Road Moolap, but the Leopold one will be a fairly simple structure reminiscent of this, but with more shelter. There will be at least one wall with a commemorative plaque showing the names of all the donors, a little like the Leopold War Memorial shelter. By the way, we must very soon close off donations as we are rapidly reaching our target, The planning permit has been applied for, then the building permit will follow, then building takes place. We will keep everyone posted.

08.01.2022 Look at this ! Doesn't look like much, but it IS !! Our first real, face to face barbeque at Bunnings in about six months. We just had to share a couple of photos of Lions raising some of that money that goes 100% back to the community.

08.01.2022 Our Lions 201V2 Lions 46th Convention was held on Zoom as a virtual Convention on Saturday 7th November. There were very few problems, and all went very well, resulting in a successful event. Here is a still from the opening minutes of the day. Most of the convention can be watched on the Lions 201V2 Facebook site, as it was all live streamed.

07.01.2022 Clean machine: Copied from the Bellarine Times Dec 25th Lions recognise Leopold legend Leopold Lions Club president Ute Farago and fellow Lions Trevor Ffrost and Carmel Vella applaud the efforts of Tom Donlen, 19, in keeping the community safe by cleaning up the aftermath of an accident. 06.01.2022 At the recent virtual Convention, held on Zoom webinar, the Lions Club of Leopold was pleased to receive an award for being the most active club in the area of visitations to other Lions Clubs, thus promoting friendship and fellowship. The award is pictured.

04.01.2022 Graffiti removal is being undertaken by Lion Trevor Ffrost in this post that was copied from the Leopold Community Page

03.01.2022 Here is a little more activity from the shed reno. Really good stuff (or is it junk? Who knows?) on the move, and getting ready for the new door.

03.01.2022 The Lions Club of Leopold hosted a Christmas lunch for the residents of the Leopold Hall Lions Retirement Village (Moller Court) to celebrate the imminent arrival of Christmas and spread a feeling of goodwill. What a success it turned out to be, and how Christmassy does our club room look. Well done to all concerned.

02.01.2022 A number of the Lions Club of Leopold members were seen handing out Lions Christmas Cakes at the Leopold Hall Lions Retirement Village (aka Moller Court) in lieu of a Christmas lunch that was cancelled due to COVID provisions.

02.01.2022 At the Lions Club meeting on Thursday 17th December, Past District Governor Biddy Weel inducted two new members, Enam Miazi, and Barend van der Pol, to our active, enthusiastic group. We certainly welcome them with their new ideas, and with the valuable skills that they bring. Sponsors were Dennis Mitchell and Trevor Ffrost.

02.01.2022 On the evening of Saturday 16th January, the Lions celebrated easing of the COVID-19 rules by meeting at the Lions Shed for the Opening barbeque for 2021. We had organised a QR code thus allowing us to have one person per 2 sq.m. You can see in the photos just how happy everyone was to be out and about again.

02.01.2022 Something to celebrate !! The equipment shed in the Lions Club den is finally concreted with help from Bendigo Bank, and obliging local concreters. We thank everyone involved. What a great job. There was only one incident, when an un-named Lion overbalanced and left a backside sized impression in the wet concrete. Luckily he did not have a record or he may have become a "hardened criminal"

01.01.2022 Only a day later, and the Lions Cemetery Shelter is completed. Foreman Lion John Farago is seen taking a well earned break now that the work is over. Well done team !

01.01.2022 Finally the Lions Shelter at the Leopold Cemetery has entered the construction phase, and should be finished tomorrow. Lions John Paice, John Farago and Nic Pfarrer are seen assisting Geelong Cemetery Trust personnel undertake erection. Soon we will commission the plaque to go onto the inner wall of the shelter, but the timing is a little vague at this stage. Perhaps there were some who wondered when it would go up, but these are complicated times, and all parties concerned were somewhat frustrated by happenings outside their control.
