22.01.2022 A Family Fun Run along Bellerive and Howrah Beaches 5 km and 2 km Organised by The Lions Club of Clarence in conjunction with St Giles to raise money for Australian Lions Children’s Mobility Foundation(ALCMF) to provide walking devices for children who need mobility support. Frans was a respected member of the club since 2012, a board member in many positions, and involved in many of our projects. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family at this time.

06.01.2022 The Club has, recently, commenced a project to financially support the very generous personal efforts of Leanne Tomlinson in relation to the provision of Spica Chairs to infant children suffering Hip Dysplasia. Leanne herself suffered Hip Dysplasia that was not diagnosed until adulthood, necessitating extensive and repetitive surgical intervention. Wanting, now, to help others, Leanne has produced a Spica Chair design under the supervision of the RHH Paediatric Physiotherap...ist and endorsed by Paediatric & Adult Orthopaedic specialists that is suitable to be used by infant children with Hip Dysplasia. Leanne made the first ten chairs entirely at her own cost and sent them to children with Hip Dysplasia throughout Tasmania. The RHH Paediatric Physiotherapist has now told Leanne that the incidence of infant Hip Dysplasia is quite high and that more Spica Chairs are needed to satisfy the requirements of young children in Tasmania. A Spica Chair is generally used by a needy child for between three and six months. It is then dismantled, repacked into its shipping bags and sent back to Leanne who refurbishes it and sends it out to the next needy child. Leanne came to our Club as a Guest Speaker and brought one of the chairs, for the members to see. Leanne gave a very informative and enlightening talk on Hip Dysplasia and how the Spica Chairs can make the children's lives more comfortable. The Club has donated $3,000 to Leanne to enable her to build an additional ten Spica Chairs. Leanne also needs funding to purchase the special bags required for the delivery of the chairs to the needy children and to help with the costs of chair maintenance. The chairs, made mostly of melamine coated chipboard, are very heavy and are shipped as two flat packs weighing around 20kg each. The shipping bags, because the chairs are so heavy and because they are used many times over, are made of a very heavy duty (therefore costly) canvas material. This will be an ongoing project for the Club and, since the beneficiaries are infant children throughout Tasmania, it is one that would benefit from the support of other Lions Clubs in the District.
