25.01.2022 For the month of September we will be one of the lucky jars at Grilld in Subiaco Thanks to their community fundraising program "Local Matters" Local Matters began in 2011 as a way for Grilld to give back, and support communities. A Local Matters token is given to every customer with their burger order. Customers then choose a charity, dropping their token into that jar.... We are delighted to be part of this initiative.

21.01.2022 Aussie study targets at-risk relatives of glaucoma patients. Our very own Professor David Mackey is the principal investigator on a study that is targeting the most at-risk relatives of glaucoma patients. Preliminary results of this study show that approximately 38% have the disease or have suspicious signs and require close monitoring.... The preliminary results are part of the Targeting at Risk Relatives of Glaucoma patients for Early Diagnosis and Treatment (TARRGET) study, an ongoing investigation that aims to implement and evaluate an educational program directed at family members of people with advanced glaucoma, and to encourage regular eye health checks. The research team alongside Professor David Mackey, is Associate Professor Alex Hewitt, Associate Professor Ivan Goldberg, Associate Professor John Landers and Professor Jamie Craig. 11.01.2022 Meet Des and his furry friend Tyson, he is one of our patients who has quite the story to tell This 63-year-old former professional power boat racer lost significant vision in his right eye by the time he was 30 as a result of a genetic disorder, Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome. In a cruel twist of fate, he lost all vision in that same eye a decade later, after suffering a traumatic injury when the brake lever on a bicycle punctured his eye. Then, as a further result of Axenfeld-R...ieger syndrome, Des lost vision in his left eye and has been totally blind since 2016. Des visits us regularly at the Lions Eye Institute, bringing with him a great burst of energy and of course a very well loved friend Tyson the Labrador. Its also important for brain and eye development during infancy. Thus, DHA deficiency can impair vision, especially in children.... To date, it has provided high quality tissue for over 3,000 corneal transplants. You might be wondering, who can be an eye donor? The answer is most people are eligible to donate. ... Having poor vision, wearing glasses and/or having macular degeneration does not preclude people from becoming donors, as these conditions do not affect the cornea. 02.01.2022 It was lovely to see some of the Zeiss team in Broome last week take the time from their busy day to drop into our temporary clinic and see how we are getting o...n with the awesome new equipment. Dr Angus and Dr Vaibhav were very happy to show them how they had mastered the machines and share with them how they are being used to support Broome and Kimberley patients. 02.01.2022 This #FlashbackFriday brings us a moment captured, with Orthoptist Beverly Balfour screening for a condition called Amblyopia. Amblyopia (lazy eye) is the loss or lack of development of vision in an eye that is unrelated to any eye health problem. In most cases, only one eye is affected but in some cases, reduced visual acuity can occur in both eyes.... If Amblyopia is detected early in life and treated promptly, reduced vision can be minimised.
