25.01.2022 Much needed help.
24.01.2022 LCSI organised first of its Diabetes Awareness Series: When it comes to communicating important health messages to an at-risk community, who better to enlist than trusted local leaders and familiar faces within that community? On Saturday the Lions Club of Sydney Indian welcomed more than 100 community members to the first diabetes awareness seminar in a series proudly organised and promoted by the Lions Club of Sydney Indian, with support from Lions Club International, AASHA... Australia Foundation, Dr Sundars Medical Practice, Multicultural Professional Forum and Sri Om Care. The free seminar was held at the Wentworthville Community Centre and included presentations by endocrine advanced trainee Dr Katherine Gupta from Western Sydney Diabetes (WSD) and endocrinologist Dr Ashis Gargya from Strathfield Private Hospital, followed by a light lunch and heres the fun bit Bollywood entertainment. Free Blood Glucose Level (BGL) testing was also available to help guests identify if theyre at risk of type 2 diabetes. President of the Lions Club of Sydney Indian, Mr Padmanabhan Karamil, said the Club has joined the fight against diabetes. Diabetes is an epidemic in our community and we need as many organisations as possible to collaborate and spread the diabetes awareness message to our people who may be at risk, Mr Karamil said. We are proud to work with Western Sydney Diabetes to lead our community towards a healthier future, he said. WSD director Professor Glen Maberly said for the past two years, WSD has been building relationships with trusted local businesses and identities in communities at risk of type 2 diabetes. Health alone cant fix the diabetes problem, so we are working closely with community leaders who can raise awareness of the disease and promote healthy living options at a grassroots level, Prof Maberly said. We are encouraged by the depth of commitment from local leaders who take the threat of diabetes, and all the related health issues and complications, so seriously that they have become advocates for awareness and champions of prevention. Place-Based Mobilisation is an exciting concept that aims to drive disease prevention by local influencers who have the ears of their community and the passion to help them beat type 2 diabetes, Prof Maberly said. For information about upcoming community seminars, please contact: President of the Lions Club Sydney Indian, Mr Padmanabhan Karamil via [email protected] or Western Sydney Diabetes Program Manager, Sumathy Ravi via [email protected]

05.01.2022 LCSI organising Diabetes Seminar on 31 August: Diabetes can lead to serious diseases affecting the heart and blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, nerves and teeth. In most high-income countries, diabetes is a leading cause of cardiovascular disease, blindness, kidney failure, and lower limb amputation. It is expected to affect 629 million adults by 2045. In Australia, 280 people develop diabetes every day and around 1.7 million Australians have diabetes. This includes known diabete...s diagnoses as well as silent, undiagnosed type 2 diabetes (thought to be around 500,000 people). There are more than 4,400 amputations every year in Australia as a result of diabetes this is the second highest rate in the developed world. In 2005, more than 1000 people with diabetes died as a direct result of foot ulcers and lower limb wounds around 8% of all diabetes-related deaths. Every year there are 10,000 hospital admissions in Australia for diabetes-related foot ulcers in Australia many of these end with people having a limb, or part of a limb, amputated. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians with diabetes are 38 times more likely to undergo a major leg amputation compared to non-Indigenous Australians with diabetes. They are also 27 times more likely to undergo a minor leg amputation. Nearly all (98%) of amputations in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are related to diabetes. Diabetes can be managed well, but the potential complications are the same for type 1 and type 2 diabetes including heart attack, stroke, kidney disease, limb amputation, depression, anxiety and blindness. We know that diabetes: is the leading cause of blindness in working age adults is a leading cause of kidney failure and dialysis increases the risk of heart attacks and stroke by up to four times is a major cause of limb amputations affects mental health as well as physical health. Depression, anxiety and distress occur in more than 30% of all people with diabetes However, early diagnosis, optimal treatment and effective ongoing support and management reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications. Lions in Australia and around the world see and feel the effects of diabetes and are doing something about it together.
