21.01.2022 Covid-19 is having severe impacts economic, health and social impacts across Australia. There has never been a more important time for Australians to work together. This open letter from the Community Council for Australia outlines how NFP's and charities are an essential part of the solution and need to be considered and resourced appropriately to support Australians through the challenging times ahead.
20.01.2022 We think of ourselves as the lucky country, but around one in eight Australians over 3 million people live in poverty. This rate is higher than many other OECD countries, and is higher than it was in Australia twenty years ago. We are moving backwards, not forwards, on this critical indicator of social and economic wellbeing. Australian Council of Social Service has just released Part 2 of the Poverty in Australia Report, which outlines who is affected, and some of the factors influencing this critical issue: http://povertyandinequality.acoss.org.au/poverty/ #poverty #inequality

18.01.2022 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities are extremely vulnerable to the devastating effects of the coronavirus crisis. Right across the country, it is Aboriginal community leaders, councils and organisations that are the first responders to this crisis for their communities. Lirata has signed on to an open letter calling on the Federal Government to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, respond to the requests of community-controlled organisations on the ground and immediately release critical resourcing needed to keep people safe. Add your voice to the calls here: https://www.firstnations-covid19-letter.org/
18.01.2022 As the policy focus in Australia is moving from the health impacts of COVID-19 to fostering economic recovery, it is vital that we ask: What type of society are we rebuilding? Outdated economic models and punitive social policies of successive governments have created a vulnerable rather than a resilient society. With a carefully considered approach to recovery, Australia can emerge stronger and fairer from this crisis and better prepared to deal with future crises. ... We propose four key avenues to drive a just recovery and improve the quality of Australian life. #covid19 #justrecovery #climatechange #socialhousing
17.01.2022 Schools, workplaces and governments are all currently moving to from physical to remote online delivery due to covid-19, however millions of Australians without a broadband internet connection risk being left behind. Currently there are 1 million households without a broadband internet connection and up to 2.5 million people not online. Lirata supports calls from Australian Council of Social Service, Australian Communications Consumer Action Network and others in the sector to urgently address internet affordability and access to avoid severe economic and social consequences.
17.01.2022 Change the date in your own backyard! Lirata supports the Change the Date movement, pushing to move the date of Australia Day from 26 January to another day. From the perspective of many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, as well as many other Australians, the current date of Australia Day and its legitimisation of invasion is offensive. The date links Australia's national identity to a process of violent colonisation that was, and still is, unjust and traumatic. U...ltimately, we would like to see Australian governments shift the date for celebrating our national identity to one that is respectful and inclusive of all Australians. In the interim, everyday Australians can choose to Change the Date in their own lives, and within the organisations in which they work. 15.01.2022 Today (Thursday 13 February) marks the 12th anniversary of the National Apology to Stolen Generations. On this day in 2008, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd stood before the Australian Parliament and apologised for the laws and policies of successive Parliaments and governments that have inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss on these our fellow Australians. He apologised especially for the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, thei...r communities and their country. The acknowledgement of past injustices is an important step. However, significant disparity remains in health outcomes, life expectancy, educational results and economic opportunities, between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the experts on how to live well and sustainably on this land. For the benefit of all Australians, their voices need to be clearly heard in all major policy discussions in our society.
15.01.2022 Congratulations to Aboriginal Housing Victoria on the launch of the Victorian Aboriginal Housing and Homelessness Framework. This is an important milestone in guiding housing responses to Aboriginal people in Victoria.
13.01.2022 Lirata was the evaluation partner for the recent pilot of an exciting new approach to more truly co-designed services in mental health and AOD services. The Stretch2Engage Framework builds capacity to better engage with people who use services, and their families and supporters in service design activities. Could this new approach change the way your organisation works?

13.01.2022 Lirata celebrates and recognises Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Owners of the land we live and work on. We acknowledge the many thousands of generations of Indigenous people who have cared for this Country and the harms done through the ongoing process of colonisation. We acknowledge that Indigenous sovereignty was never ceded, and we support Indigenous aspirations for self-determination. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land.

06.01.2022 The Australian Government is currently moving toward the introduction of a Religious Discrimination Bill. Although intended to prohibit discrimination on the basis of religious belief or activity, the draft legislation will make it legal to discriminate against LGBTIQ+ people, women, people with disability, and others, in certain circumstances. Lirata’s open letter to the Attorney-General, Christian Porter, outlines the concerns of our staff and Directors in regard to this le...gislation. Australian legislation and policy should be working toward equitable access for all Australians to health and wellbeing, health care, education and employment. Unfortunately the proposed legislation will undermine this and make social problems within our community worse, not better. Read our full letter here: http://www.lirata.com//Lirata-OpenLetter-ReligiousDiscrimi And visit Equality Australia’s website to find out how you can take action: https://equalityaustralia.org.au/freedom-from-discriminati/ #lirata #equality #socialjustice #religiousdiscriminationbill
05.01.2022 Diversity is all around us and is an important asset in working with communities and achieving change. But how much does your organisation really know about the diversity within its workforce, and how can it use that information better? Diversity Atlas is a new software platform that helps to answer these questions. In this article we interview Cultural Infusion CEO Peter Mousaferiadis to find out how Diversity Atlas helps organisations get to grips with diversity. http://www.lirata.com//29-in/102-diversity-atlas-interview
05.01.2022 An Evaluation Needs Assessment is a process that helps to identify capacities and areas for development in Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) within a team or organisation. This helps guide effective action to improve MEL capacity. Through a recent project with Djirra, Lirata developed an Evaluation Needs Assessment framework that provides a structured way of analysing evaluation capacity. To read more and see how it might be applicable to your work click here: http://www.lirata.com//100-evaluation-needs-assessment-fra
04.01.2022 The Lirata team are joining with lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and gender diverse and intersex (LGBTIQ+) people and their allies, across the world, to celebrate this International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). What does this year’s theme, Breaking the silence, mean to Lirata? We know that LGBTIQ+ people don’t always feel safe in our society. It’s hard to be out and proud at school, at work, when seeking health care and support, o...r even with friends or family, when faced with discrimination and negative messages from the world around us. We recognize that this has a significant impact on LGBTIQ+ people’s health and wellbeing. This is especially so when the impact of Covid-19 worsens health inequities that already exist for LGBTIQ+ people. So this IDAHOBIT, Lirata pledges to join the voices of others to promote inclusive practice, and to listen and respond to the voices of LGBTIQ+ people, so that we leave no-one behind in addressing this health crisis and beyond. Please join us in making your pledge to ensure a just and inclusive health response for all (see https://lgbtihealth.org.au//the-lgbti-health-pledge-campa/).
04.01.2022 The failure over the past 12 years to close the gaps in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health inequality, and other measures of social and economic disadvantage, cannot be justified. Over the years so many of these gaps and measures have been ignored, overlooked and disregarded. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are not deficits or statistics. The 2020 Close the Gap campaign report released today presents 14 recommendations for Australian governments that m...ust be urgently implemented to avoid further preventable deaths and protect Indigenous health, wellbeing, culture and Country. At Lirata, we think it's a national priority to close the gaps in critical social determinants between First Nations people and non-Indigenous Australians. It is also essential that this is achieved by recognising Indigenous beliefs and knowledge, driving self-determination, increasing Indigenous leadership, and ensuring connection to country. However, a strengths-based approach does not overlook the relationship of power and inequality on health outcomes and the responsibility of governments in leading systems reform. The work of communities must be matched by governments through shared decision-making, equitable (and sustained) funding and a cohesive policy approach. Pledge your support for the campaign here: https://antar.org.au/closethegappledge You can read the 2020 Close the Gap campaign report here: https://www.humanrights.gov.au//publicatio/close-gap-2020
02.01.2022 How is your bank or insurance company doing on gender equality? What about your preferred internet provider, TV station or fast food chain? Lots of companies talk the talk on gender equity, but how many of them walk the walk? Thanks to our friends at Future Super, we now have a much better idea of the answer to this question. They recently released the Equality is Everyone’s Business report, which gives a gender equity score for each of the top 100 companies listed on the Aus...tralian Stock Exchange, based on a clear and transparent set of criteria. There’s a surprisingly wide range in performance, and some of the leaders and laggards are not who you might think! Check out the report online for details, and if you are a customer or shareholder of any of these companies, talk to them about how they can do better. The report provides some handy points to focus your conversation with them.
