25.01.2022 Maylands-based Buddha's Light International Association of WA has received a grant to hold an event for Thank a Volunteer Day! Thank a Volunteer Day will be celebrated on 5th December and BLIA will be holding an afternoon tea to celebrate. It’s important for our community to come together to acknowledge and celebrate the important role that volunteers play in connecting and building community.

24.01.2022 Our local schools are the lifeblood of our community, often serving as more than just a place of learning. That’s why the McGowan Government is making it easier for Maylands schools to open their facilities as community hubs. The change will deliver more green open space for local residents, and as well as greater meeting options for local community and sporting organisations.

24.01.2022 I have an important update in Western Australia’s legal fight with Clive Palmer: We have had another significant victory in court today and it is an important... step in killing off Mr Palmer’s $30 billion claim against WA taxpayers. As I’m sure you know, as well as trying to tear down the WA border against health advice, that have protected Western Australians from COVID-19, Mr Palmer was also trying to take $30 billion from our State. This is related to one of Mr Palmer’s iron ore projects in the Pilbara which he chose not to proceed with. If Mr Palmer was successful in his unprecedented and outrageous $30 billion claim, it would bankrupt our State. It would leave us in a dire situation. That’s why my Government introduced urgent legislation into the State Parliament. To protect all Western Australians, Mr Palmer had to be stopped. Predictably, he launched legal action against our legislation to try and continue his $30 billion claim. Today, the WA Government had a major win in the Supreme Court of Queensland which has removed a key component of Mr Palmer’s claim. This is another victory for all Western Australians. It follows our emphatic victory in the High Court against Mr Palmer’s attempts to tear down the hard border. Today’s decision once again vindicates our decision to take on Clive Palmer. I will always fight to protect Western Australians and keep our State safe and strong.

Looks like I'm going to have to get some smaller t-shirts made There's a place for everyone in our team- whether it's door knocking, phoning, letter-boxing or donating. We want to talk to as many people as we can about all the great work the McGowan Labor Government is doing. To get involved, sign up here https://lisabakermla.com.au/volunteer/

07.01.2022 Today is World Teachers’ Day and I want to say a huge thank you to teachers across Maylands! This year we have seen the very best in our teachers and they’ve done an outstanding job for our local kids. 07.01.2022 On the Derbal Yerrigan, Swan River at Maylands Yacht Club this morning. Just stunning. I took a video of speed boats screaming past at far more than the legal limit. NOT OK.

07.01.2022 In an emergency situation it is very important that residents are able to act quickly and with confidence that they will get the necessary support for their animals. The McGowan Government is boosting animal welfare preparedness in emergencies across @bayswatercity with funding through the Animal Welfare in Emergencies Grant. The funding will help ensure there is appropriate equipment used to house and look after animals in the event of an evacuation and there are appropriat...e emergency animal welfare plans in place. This includes protecting both our much loved companion animals as well as livestock.

07.01.2022 Young people make such valuable contributions in our community. That’s why it’s wonderful to see them getting recognition for their efforts through the WA Youth Awards. It’s even more exciting to have two finalists from the Maylands community - congratulations Karen and Zac!... Karen (13) is being recognised for founding BASED - Beat Aussie Streets Every Day - to encourage young people to use wrestling as a tool to learn about themselves and address any problems they might be facing. Despite COVID, BASED worked to coordinate beach wrestling events for young people every month in 2020, and recently ran a two-day workshop in the remote town of Cue to engage with local youth. Throughout his adolescence and teenage years, Zac battled depression, addiction and housing instability, but with the support of a youth worker, Zac entered a youth detox program before moving into transitional accommodation. It was here he wrote his first book, Desolation Diaries, written to help other young people facing the same challenges. Zac is currently compiling his fifth poetry collection, is writing a philosophy book and has taken on a role within the Youth at Risk Network Action Group, along with Perth Inner City Youth Service’s Be Seen And Be Heard Group. Best of luck to both Karen and Zac, award winners will be announced Friday April 9th.

03.01.2022 I hope everyone has a spooky Halloween! This is me consulting with my office familiar, Sirius

03.01.2022 Our response to the COVID-19 pandemic has always been first and foremost about protecting the health and safety of Western Australians. We’ve followed the exper...t health advice, and for the last seven months, our hard border has kept Western Australia safe and strong. Today, in line with the latest advice from the Chief Health Officer, I can announce that WA will soon cautiously transition to a controlled interstate border. I’d like to take a moment of your time to run through what this means. Pending ongoing health advice, this change will take effect at 12:01am on Saturday 14 November. However, we will be closely monitoring the situation over east and if we need to delay this introduction of the controlled border, then we will. Also, I will have no hesitation to reintroduce our hard border in the future if that’s what’s needed to keep us safe. This hasn’t been an easy year for anyone. But for many Western Australians, the hard border has been particularly challenging. I’d like to thank everyone for their understanding and patience over these months particularly those who have been separated from their loved ones by the border. I know how hard it has been my own parents and brother live in New South Wales. It’s been extremely difficult not knowing when I will be able to see them again. Throughout the pandemic, we’ve maintained a cautious and careful approach based on WA’s expert health advice from the Chief Health Officer. That advice has served us well as we have embarked on our own, unique recovery. Today, based on that health advice and the rates of local infection in the eastern states, we are now at the next step of our journey. I want every Western Australian to know that we would not be proceeding down this path unless we had the health advice that it was safe to do so. The time is right, the conditions are right, and I’m confident our controlled border arrangement strikes the right balance. These are cautious, considered and careful steps. The existing hard border exemption system will be removed and replaced with the controlled interstate border regime, established on an updated nationwide health-based threshold that allows for safe travel into Western Australia from interstate with conditions, and subject to trigger points being met. The Chief Health Officer has recommended a 14-day rolling average of less than five community cases per day in each state and territory be required before progressing to the new border controls. This condition is currently being met. Under this system, travel from ‘very low risk’ states and territories will be permitted, with conditions on arrival including declarations, temperature tests and possible COVID-19 testing. These jurisdictions currently include Tasmania, Queensland, South Australia, Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory because they have had no community cases for more than 28 days. Travel from ‘low risk’ states and territories also permitted, with similar conditions on arrival, in addition to 14 days of self-quarantine and a mandatory Day 11 COVID-19 test. These jurisdictions currently include New South Wales and Victoria because they have less than five community cases per day on a 14-day rolling average. Failure to follow these directions or providing false information will be enforceable by law, with penalties ranging from $1,000 infringements, to up to $50,000 fines for individuals. These are safe, steady and sensible steps. But should the situation change once again, I will not hesitate to return to hard border arrangements if that is what is required to protect the health and safety of Western Australians. In the meantime, we need to continue to take personal responsibility. The virus hasn’t been defeated around the world we must work together to prevent outbreaks and not jeopardise what we’ve achieved so far. The controlled border still includes important and strong protections for our State, but within it we must also maintain our vigilance to keep our State safe and strong. All Western Australians must embrace COVID-safe principles. That means acting responsibly and following the health advice. Thank you again to all Western Australians for the sacrifices you have made this year. We’re the envy of the world for so many reasons. We have a long way to go, and many challenges still to face. But right now, there’s nowhere I’d rather be.
