25.01.2022 Cubbies are so wonderful for many reasons - indoor, outdoors, rain or shine!

25.01.2022 Thanks for sharing Kath Murdoch. This is such an important share because -still- many mistake inquiry with low accountability. It’s important to make expectations clear and owned by the learners. So they must be co-constructed.

23.01.2022 Registrations are now open for this EChO event. I can’t wait to collaborate with Matt again! We’ve got some great plans about what we will share with you on the day.

23.01.2022 Oh my could this be our mantra?

22.01.2022 This week marks the end of Summer holidays for many Australian educators. I’ve appreciated the time to switch off, wind down and just BE. (Including a short break at one of our amazing South Australian beaches). I hope many of you have been able to find this space for yourself too. 2020 taught us, amongst other things, that we cannot predict the future. But we can plan for possibilities and I’m excited about the plans we have for 2021! Our well-loved workshops and mini cour...ses are back (in person in SA). New eCourses will be launched. A couple of new online and in person offerings are in the works. And we welcome our new and continuing Partner Sites - can’t wait to see where our work takes us!

21.01.2022 I’ve been working with the new Ngutu College, which will open in Adelaide in 2021. Here, in a little information video we made (when lockdown meant we couldn’t meet in person), I talk a little about the pedagogy of Writing Workshop. It was fun to make these videos! And so rewarding to contribute my little part to this new educational project.

20.01.2022 SA preschools - have you seen our professional learning model that has been designed with you in mind? We tailor it to your goals and context, so you can align it with your PQIP goals or current 'challenge of practice'. The model includes: one workshop day (child-free day) 2 half-day site visits where we model and coach in your context. 1 'after-kindy' team meeting... Contact Lisa directly at [email protected] for more information. See more

20.01.2022 A great article - and not just about preschool. Early Childhood is widely considered as Birth-8 years of age, because of hundreds of years of child development research. Think back 100 years: children used to begin school around age six or seven, and at this age, children develop into the concrete operational stage of cognitive development (Russell, 2011; Sax, 2001). Children can read, use logic, have representational thinking, and as such, understand more sophisticated con...cepts. Now we find that traditional education methods have trickled down their expectations to younger and younger children, most of which are not developmentally ready for these types of tasks. While children will display some level of mastery, often, the knowledge is rote and without a true understanding of the concept. Think of the online videos with toddlers reciting all of the U.S. Presidents’ names in order. While adorable for friends and grandparents, it does not put those children on the fast track to becoming an award-winning historian. They have merely attained rote knowledge. See more

19.01.2022 Can you join us online on 21st October? Our second "What's in Your Stack?" Chat is about Interesting Ways to Organise a Book. What participants of Chat #1 had to say: "(The most helpful thing was) having someone model what parts of the mentor text to analyse and and gain a bit more understanding how to use it in a class setting." https://events.humanitix.com/what-s-in-your-stack-chat-ways

18.01.2022 Another local author’s work to add to my stack of mentor texts.

16.01.2022 As many of you know, I am just a ‘little’ dog crazy! I love how many dogs are becoming part of school communities here in SA. (Oh and this gorgeous pooch has a fantastic name!! )

16.01.2022 Being a leader has nothing to do with rank or authority. A leader is someone who embraces the awesome responsibility to see those around them rise.

16.01.2022 Trawling through old notebooks this morning stumbled across this pertinent writing quote. It sings the truth...

16.01.2022 In this 9 min video, Mary Howard makes some clear and powerful points about Guided Reading. I find it is one of the most mis-understood pedagogical practices - at its best it is responsive, dynamic and explicit. At its worst, its just round-robin Reading (well, that’s not actually Guided Reading at all). I worked with a NZ colleague in the past, who taught me that it is akl about ‘guiding the reader’, not following any predetermined script. This is well worth the 9 min view. Thanks for sharing @DrSamBommarito

15.01.2022 What a powerful image.

15.01.2022 We have a new offering for you in a few weeks. It will be online. Only 15 mins each week for 6 weeks. And connected to this research....curious? Amanda Bartram and I are on a mission this year

13.01.2022 This reflects our beliefs about the power of language and why we teach the way we do (particularly in Writing Workshop, but also Reading Workshop and Word Study). 3.30 min animated video that's worth watching as a provocation for reflecting on the pedagogical stance you take.

13.01.2022 Can’t wait to hear what the Book Club discuss! Thanks EChO.

13.01.2022 Love this Poetry technique I learnt from Alan Wright!

12.01.2022 Can’t wait to collaborate with our friend and colleague Matt Glover for this EChO Saturday conference - a hybrid of face to face and virtual! https://fb.me/e/47GqBsBCk

12.01.2022 Are you wondering what Writing Spotlight to study next term? You could watch our "What's in Your Stack?" Chat about the Study "Make Your Characters Come Alive!" or some inspiration... (One hour recorded zoom webinar with resources sheet - $25pp) https://lisaburman.thinkific.com/enroll/914106

12.01.2022 How gorgeous! Thanks for sharing Amanda Bartram and congratulations to Kathleen Mellor Kindy.

11.01.2022 If you’ve ever wondered about the power of a Writer’s Notebook - or how it is different to a journal, diary or draft book - read on...anothe great post from Alan Wright Living Life Twice.

11.01.2022 Congratulations to Prospect North Primary and their principal, Marg Clark, on their dual nominations for Primary School of the Year and Principal of the Year in these national awards. Bravo!

10.01.2022 This is fantastic! As Amanda Bartram says... ‘Love this, not just because it is a good way of tying shoes, but because of Colton's instructional ability... and the way he credits his friend, River, for teaching him! What a learner identity he has!!!’ How many Kindergarten/reception teachers/parents will be showing this video to their children tomorrow???

10.01.2022 As we wake on a Saturday morning in Australia, you might want to check our Leah Mermelstein’s free webinar.

08.01.2022 Fantastic to see this at CBC - authentic purposes for writing and collaborating.

06.01.2022 This is a great story! Click through to the song to put a smile on your face (and maybe a tear to the eye). Congratulations to Ms Sarah and all the children!

04.01.2022 I have a new education hero! I just watched this recorded webinar from PETAA and ordered Dr Anita Collins' book immediately! It is an inspiring view for anyone interested in helping young children reach their reading potential in ways that are engaging, joyful AND successful. Dr Collins brings neuroscience to the kindy/classroom context. I made so many connections to our belief in the importance of providing music in a child's life EVERY day (and 'live' music, not only pre-recorded singalongs) - for building connection, belonging, phonological awareness, language, vocabulary, working memory and auditory processing . "Language and music share an overlapping neural network." Dr Anita Collins Highly recommend taking 40 mins to view this.

02.01.2022 Agreed! Thank you to Conscious Parents

01.01.2022 It’s the process that’s important Carla Rinaldi - and I add, the process is what makes for a beautiful connection between those who are inquiring and wondering together.
