24.01.2022 Something a bit different today - this was from a couple of years ago when Mars was at its closest to Earth. This was taken just as the very first light of the day started to ever so faintly paint the sky during a lunar eclipse. I love just how bright Mars is, twinkling up in the corner.

23.01.2022 In our two weeks travelling around the Bavarian Alps this was the only time we got any colour at sunrise or sunset. It was the morning after this freak wind event during the middle of the night: we’d gone to bed with it being perfectly calm and then were woken at 3am to hurricane force winds that had formed due to the snow on top of the mountains melting and the cold air from it rolling down off the range (I think that’s what it was). We watched as a trampoline went flying th...rough the backyard and trees bent almost to the ground. When we awoke in the morning before sunrise I saw these big clouds and thought there’d be a chance of colour so high-tailed it out the door to try my luck at the chapel of St Coloman, with the supremely popular castle Neuschwanstein nestled on the mountainside in the background. The trees had (unsurprisingly) lost most of their leaves during the night. Later that morning we walked up through the forest along the Stations of the Cross besides the nearby town of Füssen (such a lovely place!). Unfortunately when we got to the top it seemed Jesus had been another victim of the winds (along with a lot of trees on the other side of the hill), as his cross had snapped in 2 and he was left dangling upside down by only a bent piece of metal...oh dear! 22.01.2022 Part of the awesome view from the top of Mount Mitchell in Main Range National Park. You can see it, along with our walk to the top...and even a lyrebird encounter!...in my latest YouTube video at http://frost.photos/youtube-latest

17.01.2022 A year ago today I was getting soaked to the skin at Loch Muick in Scotland. I thought all my clothes were waterproof but hadn’t tested them out in conditions like these: blowing a gale and driving rain; and by the end of the hour or so we spent out in the rain I had water running down my legs into my boots...not that I really noticed until I got back to the car as I was too busy trying (trying!) to take photos. It was a struggle as it was hard to keep the lens dry, difficult to even see the image on the camera, and I had to take my glasses off because I couldn’t see a thing with them on. Unfortunately I didn’t manage the focussing very well in these conditions and this is about the only vaguely usable image I came away with. Still it was a memorable experience that I wouldn’t trade (though I’d definitely wear different clothes!)

17.01.2022 A fitting sunset for a day of storms and sun. We luckily were on the Southern end and didn’t cop it like those in the Northern Gold Coast: cricket ball size hailstones and torrential rain. I’ve never seen so many storms interspersed with broken clouds and sunshine (I think I read there were 9...!?!) I recommend watching this sunset to the end as after a spell in the middle where it looks like it’s done there ends up being some really interesting light in the clouds!

16.01.2022 I liked the contrast between the flooded gum and the tree ferns on our walk back to the campground at Whian Whian a couple of weeks ago. The flooded gums are very impressive trees as they grow to over 50m (some can even exceed 80m!) and yet they remain incredibly skinny for their height. I love the colour of their bark set against the greens of the surrounding rain forest.

14.01.2022 We were driving from Drumnadrochit to Glencoe and as we passed by this river the autumn colours drew us back to investigate. It was a lovely morning with the sun shining through the woods. I’ve become so drawn to autumn colours, I hope that in the future I’ll be able to get to places where I can witness them again. @ Invermoriston Falls

07.01.2022 Here’s one from our camping trip to Main Range National Park a couple of months ago. We were so lucky to get this misty morning!

04.01.2022 Actual happiness always looks pretty squalid in comparison with the over-compensations for misery ~ Aldous Huxley ~ This is a photo from a couple of years ago from down at Hastings Point in NSW. It’s only about 45 mins drive from my house, but now because of border restrictions it is out of reach (ok technically I probably could go there, because both it and I are in the border zone, but at best there’d be a lengthy delay getting back into QLD, and there are all these r...estrictions which feels like it’s in the too hard basket). Back when I took this I’d never have imagined there being a time when the NSW/QLD border could be closed/restricted, and it’s a great reminder of how easily we can take things for granted, as back then I never even thought about the ease of movement between the states, let alone appreciated it. So I am taking this as a timely reminder to look around for all the many things there are to appreciate in life right NOW...all the things that can get overlooked because they are so easy and comfortable and familiar. As the quote suggests, it’s the little things in life, the mundane things, the everyday things when appreciated, that are the foundation for real happiness. See more

03.01.2022 Last November in Scotland I’d been taking photos in Glen Etive and thought the light was over. We were heading back down Glencoe to the pub for dinner when I noticed the pink creeping into the clouds so we hurriedly pulled over for me to get this shot.

02.01.2022 This above all: To thine own self be true ~ William Shakespeare ~ We’re getting some much needed rain today but thought I’d post this one from a super clear sunrise. ... Have a happy day! See more

01.01.2022 A year ago we’d just started a wonderful holiday in Scotland. I thought we’d probably missed the autumn colours but we were super lucky and experienced many beautiful woodlands. This was the first and my favourite - I really felt like I’d stepped into a fairy tale!
