25.01.2022 Caring for our natural world, Earth Day 2020

25.01.2022 There are so many benefits to eating seasonal fruit and vegetables, not only do they taste a whole lot better, they contain higher levels of nutrients and antioxidants making them a much better choice for your health now and for the future. When fruit and vegetables are stored in cool rooms for months on end, nutrients are lost at a surprising rate. This produce can also be chemically ripened adding unnecessary pollutants to the food. Eating seasonally supports your local farmers and community, is environmentally sustainable and is often lower in price compared to the same produce that is stored. Here is a list of Queensland seasonal foods courtesy of The Seasonal Food Guide Australia.

22.01.2022 If you've got a sore throat, head to the pantry or vegetable garden to see if you've got some Sage leaves handy. In Western herbal medicine, Sage leaves are tra...ditionally used as topical applications to relieve inflamed mucous membranes of the throat and oral cavity. You can make a Sage gargle at home by putting 2 teaspoons of fresh or dried sage leaves in a teacup then pouring boiling water over it. Cover the cup and leave the tea to brew until it completely cools. Then strain it and use it to gargle for a few moments before spitting the liquid out. In some circumstances, your natural health professional may mix a tailor-made herbal gargle for you that also incorporates other herbs, so talk to them about what's most appropriate for your personal circumstances. 21.01.2022 While many of us would like to live long lives, we would prefer to do so with all our faculties intact. 19.01.2022 Recovery from viral infections is usually quick and painless. However in some cases the recovery phase can drag on for months or even years, with ongoing fatigu...e, body aches, headaches and intermittent fevers. This is termed Post-Viral Syndrome, and is thought to be driven by the interplay between chronic viral infection and immune response. Natural medicines may aid in the convalescence and recovery from Post-Viral Syndrome. Speak to your healthcare professional for more information. See more

19.01.2022 Humans have co-evolved alongside plants, and plants have been used as medicines right from the very beginning. Throughout the ages, the healing properties of me...dicinal herbs have been identified, noted and passed on down through the generations. While modern herbalism may look somewhat different from the instinctive use of herbs by our ancestors, we are still taking part in an ancient healing practice that has stood the test of time. 18.01.2022 On our death beds nobody ever says that they regretted not working more, or being busy more. Being busy is not a life goal. It is also not a badge to be worn wi...th pride and honour. Love more, travel more, make love more, talk more, connect with friends and loved ones more, laugh more, enjoy the simple things more, eat healthier foods more, be healthy, exercise, enjoy nature more, swim in the ocean more. The list goes on. Do all these things in your own time and at your own leisure. Practice Mindfulness, not mind fullness. Let's stop the glorification of busy being busy.

17.01.2022 Dietary fats can be divided into saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids are types of polyunsaturated fats that are essential, meaning they must be obtained in the diet, as they cannot be made in the body. Omega 3 and omega 6 play important roles in regulating inflammation and maintaining cardiovascular function, brain function and vision. Polyunsaturated fats can be obtained in the diet from fish, seafood, nuts, seeds and vegetable oils, or they can be taken as a supplement. Fish oil is a rich supplemental source of omega 3, while evening primrose oil is high in omega 6. Ask your healthcare professional if a combined omega 3 and omega 6 supplement is right for you.

16.01.2022 Boost your immunity not your toilet paper collection! Now is the time to think rationally and use your common sense. After hearing of a local family who had 36 cartons (not rolls!) of toilet paper delivered to their house last week, I wondered if they had thought of ways that they could help to improve their immune systems in the fight against COVID-19. This means increasing your intake of nutrients Vitamin C Zinc Vitamin D3... Antioxidant foods: fresh berries, beetroot, tomatoes, capsicum, grapes, sweet potatoes, green leafy vegetables, etc Probiotics, specific strains such as LGG (Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG) found in many dairy products or as a supplement. There are many immune support supplements available from your natural health practitioner. Dont forget to thoroughly wash and dry your hands often. If you do develop symptoms associated with COVID-19, including fever, cough, sore throat, tiredness or shortness of breath, seek immediate guidance from a medical professional. You may be advised to isolate yourself from the general population to stop viral spread. Individuals who have recently travelled to an international high-risk area or who have recently been in contact with a confirmed case are at an increased risk of developing COVID-19 and are advised to contact a medical professional for assistance. 13.01.2022 Many people do not realise just how much stress plays in exacerbating, or making their health issue worse. It can definitely be a big part of gynaecological and... fertility issues, along with many other health issues we face. While stress is a major contributor to certain health issues it can definitely lead to flares of inflammatory disease states. What some people believe is stress, is also anxiety and this can also be a contributor to exacerbating many peoples symptoms as well. This why it is so important to also work with a trained professional, such as a psychologist or counsellor, when it comes to treating and helping many disease states and health issues. This should be part of a multimodality approach to helping lots of issues that affect us all on some level. #drandreworr #stress #anxiety #copingstrategiesforstressandanxiety #stressisabigfactorinmanyhealthissues

12.01.2022 Sometimes when were feeling stressed and taking care of everybody else, the healthiest thing we can do is consider how we can take care of ourselves. Remember ...the airplane rule? Fix your own oxygen mask before helping others. Everybody practises self-care differently with some examples including: maintaining good social connections and communicating openly with family and friends making time for activities you enjoy keeping up a healthy lifestyle by eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, getting quality sleep practising relaxation, meditation and mindfulness to give your body a chance to settle and readjust to a calm state. There are some great free resources online such as https://www.headspace.com/meditati/meditation-for-beginners Dont mistake the title self-care as meaning you are on your own in looking after yourself. 09.01.2022 What is metabolic syndrome? It is an umbrella term for a number of conditions that can occur simultaneously, which then increases the risks of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. A medical diagnosis of metabolic syndrome will include at least three of the following: abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, high blood pressure, high blood triglycerides, low levels of HDL cholesterol and high levels of LDL cholesterol. Metabolic syndrome affects 20-30% of Australian adults... and is now being seen in children and adolescents, however, changes in lifestyle and diet are helping to reduce the pathways to this syndrome. A natural health practitioner can evaluate the risks of developing metabolic syndrome and plan an individualised program to help lose weight, improve cholesterol and blood glucose levels as well as reducing higher levels of blood pressure. 09.01.2022 The link between anxiety and gut microbiota has been well established. Evidence-based research suggests that the signs and symptoms of anxiety, depression and stress can be alleviated by regulating the gut microbiome through diet changes and possible supplementation. Always consult a health professional when addressing mental health issues.

07.01.2022 Autoimmune disease is among the leading chronic conditions in Australia and New Zealand affecting around 5% of the population. Under the umbrella of autoimmune disease are over 80 differing conditions, for example, Hashimotos thyroiditis, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohns disease, multiple sclerosis and type 1 (and possibly type 2) diabetes. Autoimmune conditions are the result of the immune system attacking the bodys own cells, tissues and organs causing inflammatio...n and damage. Whilst some autoimmune conditions are localised to specific areas of the body, others are systemic and affect overall health. Most of these conditions are managed effectively through medication, however, there are some significant steps we can take to improve the symptoms of these conditions through diet and lifestyle modifications. One particular science-based diet is having wonderful outcomes in the management of autoimmune disease symptoms. This individually assessed diet must be entered into under the guidance of a health profession. For more information, please make an appointment to discuss this further. 05.01.2022 Supporting good microcirculation, or blood flow through the small blood vessels and capillaries, is vital to maintain healthy cardiovascular function and endoth...elial integrity. Kerry Bone’s 5 point dietary plan for microcirculation is an easy and sustainable way to do this: 1. Boost dietary nitrate intake with green leafy vegetables and beets daily 2. Increase cocoa intake with 2 squares of dark chocolate daily 3. Increase berry anthocyanin intake with half a punnet of blueberries, raspberries, blackberries or strawberries daily 4. Enjoy 1 clove of raw crushed garlic daily 5. Increase intake of herbs and spices, especially ginger, turmeric and green tea- up to 4 cups daily

04.01.2022 It is pretty safe to say that most of us recognise that sugary carbonated drinks, fizzy drinks, soft drinks, etc are not the best options for our health. Weight gain from these drinks has been put down to the amount consumed and the high sugar content. However, researchers are also investigating the link between carbonated drinks and the increased production of the hormone ghrelin. Ghrelin is known as the hunger hormone and is mainly produced in the stomach. When it is rele...ased it triggers the brain to tell us it is time to eat. Results of studies indicated that when given carbonated drinks, participants levels of ghrelin in the body increased by up to 50% compared to the others who were just given flat water. This increase in ghrelin then triggered the subjects to eat more during the following hours. So, if you drink soft drinks, it would be interesting to note if you feel hungrier afterwards.
