25.01.2022 An earlier version of this post was originally made last year. For the benefit of new members, and everyone else, I'm posting it here again. The purpose and ben...efits of Really Really Free Markets extend to a few different areas, and some of these are worth outlining briefly: > Providing a working example of a moneyless gift economy that can be replicated elsewhere. > Demonstrating a viable small-scale alternative to capitalism as a means of distributing resources. > Supplying useful resources for people who live a moneyless lifestyle, or who are working in this direction. >Providing a social environment where people can hang out, catch up, and hopefully listen to some live music. > Operating in a non-bureaucratised way, i.e. no stall bookings are needed, no proof of income is required, there is no limit attached to the number of items taken, and no barter arrangement is needed. >At a time when Australia is in an economic recession, mutual aid initiatives such as Free Markets are increasingly important for relieving household budgets. > In some regions, welfare payments such as Newstart are having strings attached in the form of cashless welfare cards. The 80% of income that is quarantined on the card is not eligible for spending at op shops, placing a lot of pressure on the remaining non-quarantined 20%, and making it harder to buy secondhand. Free Markets can provide a solution, enabling people in these circumstances to obtain items easily. >Offering an alternative to op shops, some of which are currently shut. In some cases items are arguably overpriced. >Curbing waste, by providing a venue for items to be given away that might not be put on sale in an op shop. Inevitably, a fair proportion of what is donated to op shops is thrown out due to the huge quantity of donations.
