25.01.2022 | JAPANESE WORKBOOTS | well almost... week end inspection on the Unalla job in Peppi Grove. The original home, built in 1903, had a fern house, tennis court and stables. These are the beautiful old time worn tiles in the entrance that previously have been hidden by carpet. The house is filled with grande details that are being lovingly restored. Brining in much needed natural light, we have installed 5x3m sky light above the jarrah stairwell and are also adding on a modern light framed extension on the northern elevation of this stately old masonry mansion. #lightframeconstruction #perthdesignandconstruct #litehousebuilding #peppermintgrove #pertharchitecture #mosaictiles

22.01.2022 | PORTAL FROM THE PAST | Reclaimed Ironbark from an old Queensland wharf finds a new home in Mt Hawthorn. One of the reasons we specialise in building light frame homes is because we get to work with highly skilled carpenters who have the ability to build a home in its entirety and then add dynamic details such as this portal framed pergola. This 30m long pergola creates a canopy under which to dine and a partition dividing the pool and lush lawn. Each piece of the portal frame weighed in excess of 250kg.

06.01.2022 | IN HOUSE SIMPATICO | The beauty of working collaboratively with @stack_design means we can come together from the very first client meetings where we discuss the site, clients unique briefs and of course the budget. Working like this enables us to run our jobs efficiently and cohesively. With the wealth of close to 50 collective years of building experience, we understand engineering and of course building methods and materials. Combine this with Stacks simple pared back ae...sthetics and we have an in house simpatico, continually bouncing ideas back and forth through the project to bring to life the best build possible. The client brief? All modern Australian on the outside, but inside a nod to their second home Japan with traditional entryway (genkan) and and tatami room. One of the challenges we faced was working with a steep sloping site. To limit costly retaining we designed the home to house the garage underneath. A lot of time was spent with the homes orientation not only for wind and solar but also to offer privacy for both client and neighbour. Being perched on a steep incline, views sweep high over a valley to the city and windows frame old gums and Norfolk Pines. A breeze block wall captures the Fremantle Doctor (our local cooling sea breeze) while referencing the original mid century homes of the area.
