25.01.2022 Lithgow and District Community Nursery is Looking For Volunteers Lithgow and District Community Nursery is a not-for-profit organisation that operates in Lithgow, NSW. We grow tubestock native plants grown at the nursery from locally sourced seed. We have a seedbank of seeds from the local region. These are harvested responsibly and used for propagation. Our plants are sold to the public, councils, Local Land Care Services, farms, and bush regeneration (including post-bush...fire) programs as well as for roadside and industrial site rehabilitation plantings. The nursery has a paid manager and is staffed by volunteers. We started recruiting volunteers just before Covid-19 hit, so we are picking up where we left off as business slowly returns to normal. Our focus at present is training-up about 4 new volunteers in reparation for the busy spring growing season which will include plants for bushfire and habitat regeneration. Here are some of the tasks our volunteers learn to do. Washing, sterilising and racking up of tubes Mixing up media and filling tubes Seed sowing, pricking out seedlings, direct sowing, propagate cuttings Serving customers, answering enquiries (email, phone and directly with customers) Weed maintenance of nursery, entry and embankment Spraying fungicide as required Hand cleaning of scale insect, sawfly larvae etc Weeding tubes, culling dead stock, condensing stock and grading Moving stock from polytunnels to shade house and shade house to hardening off areas Sorting and boxing up of orders Checking and maintaining irrigation system Sorting, cleaning and recording seeds Cleaning lunchroom, kitchen, toilet, sanitising surfaces, door handles, taps, phones etc and using PPE where appropriate Maintain species list and information sheets, print and laminate new sheets Maintain and improve garden beds Unload deliveries (pots, stakes etc) Maintenance and repairs If you feel you would like to volunteer for a short period only and do some very specific jobs, we can always use people to do weeding or be given just one task to work at. If you think you are interested, please dont reply by Facebook. Contact our Manager Alan Oliver at the Nursery on 6353 1126 on Monday, Thursday or Friday, or call in on those days at 2A Coalbrook Street, Lithgow.
