25.01.2022 Loooove this article!

25.01.2022 I found this an interesting read from a parent and educator point of view...

24.01.2022 Ive been doing a little research for our up coming week and wondering how best to incorporate Halloween festivities by looking at history and tradition and reflecting on my own traditions. As a kid my Nan and Grandad, who are originally from England, would put on Halloween parties for our family and my brother and cousins and I would bring a friend each. Everyone got into it! We had homemade costumes (thanks Mum!) and fun games, story telling. My folks and Aunties and Uncles... would all be dressed up and we drank "Witches Brew" and "Dragons Blood". It was so much fun! We even went trick or treating once or twice and that was a hard task given the closest neighbours were about half a kilometre away and we were on top of a little mountain in a rural town on the Sunshine Coast where Halloween wasnt really celebrated much. But the few neighbours we saw would give us fruit or a few old chocolates from the back of the cupboard and we all thought it was the best. I have such great memories and look forward to making new memories with my own children. So for those who perhaps think Halloween is too American have a read about the 2000 year old Celtic Pagan tradition of Samhain and enjoy the festivities, honour the souls of those who have passed, let go of the old, welcome the new and have fun! After all, dressing up and being spooky is so much fun! https://multiculturalkidblogs.com//10/20/celebrating-samh/

23.01.2022 Some immediate support for our wildlife

22.01.2022 What a delightful morning tea and devoured in a few short minutes! Sharing relaxing meals and conversation is an integral part of our day

22.01.2022 NZ has so many amazing early childhood spaces!

20.01.2022 As the journey into a new school year begins this is a great reminder that children arent always ready for what is "academically" being asking of them. If they are interested, follow that interest! Draw with them, talk with them, delight in their creative expression and show them the fun side. If they are drawn to the outdoors show them how to draw in the dirt or mud with a stick, look for letters, shapes and numbers in nature. Let their love and joy in play become your guide to their learning.

19.01.2022 So important! Academic environments are kind of useless if you arent yet confident enough or skilled enough to seek assistance or carry out the basics to get you through the day. We need to grow little learners, knowledge seekers, and wrap them up in confidence, resilience and joy. The academics will fall in to place when these things are all flowing.

18.01.2022 The iconic Christmas Tree adorned with Aussie Natives...and a few stray Bamboo leaves

17.01.2022 The wind got wild today...and so did our painting!

16.01.2022 If you have an interest in child development, neuroscience, behaviour or sensory processing this is such a great community to join. Complex processes are explained so you can understand why children (and adults) do what they do and our best way to support them. Theres always something interesting/thought provoking/challenging to read

15.01.2022 I so wish formal schooling was later for our children! Hopefully in the years to come we can make changes and let our kids be kids while they are kids! So much of the other "formal" stuff falls into place naturally with people invested in their learning and their future.

15.01.2022 Its Outdoor Classroom Day today! This is pretty much every day for us. Our set up allows for free flow from indoor to outdoor and we spend the vast majority of our time outdoors. While inside we are surrounded by sliding doors and window space so the outdoors feel like theyre part of our space even on those days we choose to be more indoorsy. We all seem better able to take on our days and any challenges they possibly throw at us when we soak up nature! And what a gorgeous day for it! Perfect Spring weather

13.01.2022 Stay Still! We have been learning this through our many first aid/hospital discussions as this is a big area of interest at the moment. Most of the kids know what to do if they see a snake but when our conversation turned to what they would do if they were bitten by a snake most said run and tell Mum or Dad. I replied with Freeze! Dont move at all! Be very still so the snake poison cant move around your body and yell for help. Great to know about the antivenene being a one for all thing now and the details of how the venom moves through our lymphatic system.

13.01.2022 "School readiness" should be about confidence and emotional awareness not literacy! My daughter started reading just before Christmas due to her own interest and the realisation she can put letters together and create words. She was ecstatic when we brought it to her attention, so visibly proud of herself...as she should be! She has also started Prep this year which she is really enjoying and the benefits of the social and independent side are perfect for her at this point ...in her life...and they have homework 4 nights a week. This consists of her reading a simple story to us (which she has remembered from reading with the teacher aid during the day...she has a rock solid memory), then 2 sight words (the basic idea is they look at them and should recognise the word). She clearly doesnt like the sight words because if she doesnt know it she feels like shes failing. The books are relatively boring for a child who enjoys listening to a good kids chapter novel. She does what she has to then gets that sense of failing again when she cant recognise the key word in the activity at the back. Something is totally wrong with this system! She reads words and writes by sounding out letters she knows and we discuss sounds and blends if she asks. None of this was pushed on her and none of the homework "reading" she is doing has built on anything she already knows or excited her to know more. I want her to love reading because it is magical and exciting to see the story play out in your head or the suspense of the ending has you on the edge of your seat...certainly not because at 5.5yrs old she SHOULD be able to read. The need for homework is surely just ticking some archaic box. "Homework" should consist of outside play, time together as a family and space for time to be alone after a busy day. Nothing more. 12.01.2022 Yes! Love this!

10.01.2022 A great reminder. It can be so hard to stop and consider this when you are co-regulating with your child/children/class all day and feeling the pull of emotional exhaustion. But little nudges from explanations like this help us regulate as well, and simply remind us to cut our children and ourselves some slack.

10.01.2022 With sadness, yet optimism and excitement for the changes ahead for our family, Little Bloom Family Day Care has had it last week of adventures! The fun, laughter, friendship, discoveries, exploration and love weve shared is beyond words. To all the children and families that have been part of our journey we send love and cherish all the memories. Our family is richer for having you all in it! ... Get out there and immerse yourself and your little munchkins in nature people. Theres a whole world to explore and an endless array of inspiring and exciting knowledge to soak up in your own backyards!

09.01.2022 Happy Halloween Everyone!

08.01.2022 This is an absolute favourite part of my job! At the beginning of this year we had a family holiday to beautiful Fiji and since then (and thanks to the magnificent Moana movie and Grandma and Pas visits to Hawaii!) The children have such a love for Polynesia! This morning began with some dress ups and we made another "coconut bra" to match my daughters for her dear friend. We decorated outside for the Hawaiian party they decided they were having and they made up some aweso...me "Hawaiian" words for their party food. We explored our garden and found some umbrella leaves and used them as plates for a refreshing watermelon morning tea before body painting began (Time to learn some traditional patterns for body painting from indigenous Australia and Polynesia I think!) I just love their passion for this! This is substantially a self directed scenario with some support and ideas added in from me at times and they are always learning a little bit more each time they gravitate to this play - becoming worldly little beings See more

07.01.2022 This is the bare bones of it all...the other stuff; the aesthetics, the opportunities, the exploring does matter but none of it means much if you dont genuinely care and build nurturing relationships.

07.01.2022 Another year nearly done . What better way to celebrate than with Australian Bush Buddies again! We love Louise! Shes so fantastic with the kids and her beautiful animals are so calm and so well loved! Thank you to all my families for all the love, support and friendship for another year. Heres to us and to our strong, inquisitive, wild, beautiful children!

06.01.2022 Ill be there again this year with some lovely ladies giving the kids a space to play. Last year this was a fantastic event so come and say hi or share far and wide!

04.01.2022 Very interesting. I can see where my two kiddos sit. Does any of this resonate with you???

03.01.2022 Check that camouflage out! Nature is the coolest!

03.01.2022 I can spout so many things that the children are learning in their play...it is boundless! But I hope to always simply let them play and be their to share knowledge, offer new, fun, exciting ways to play and support them throughout their play-filled learning experience.

03.01.2022 Playbased learning and exploration is the best way for children to learn!

02.01.2022 As someone growing up with ADHD, here are my thoughts on the current schooling system. Let me know your thoughts on this

01.01.2022 Butter lettuce growing free in our play yard from a time we let our lettuce go to seed to see its life cycle. Without the feet of little friends in the yard the past few months its decided to grow! I definitely miss our fun filled days out here together!
