13.01.2022 Can you spare a square .. of common sense?!! If you are like most people in Australia right now, you are unsure whether to be in camp concerned or camp calm. I... have been watching with interest as the panic and hysteria unfolds. Unfortunately, we dont know what will happen over the coming weeks and months .... but we do know that sales of Kleenex, Sorbent and Quilton have increased 1000%!! If youre like me, we only have two rolls of toilet paper in the entire household and were not worried in the slightest (or should I be?!). What I am more focused on right now is boosting my familys immune system. At the most basic, grass-root level in fighting any virus is a strong immune system supported by good food, sleep, hygiene, sunlight and rest. So, here are a few tips on how to boost your immune system. STAY CALM & STRESS LESS When you feel threatened (such a being in a state of stress, fear or panic), your nervous system responds by releasing stress hormones, such as cortisol and adrenaline, which activates your body into flight or fight mode. This means that your body is preparing to either flight (run) or fight and so your heart beats faster, muscles tighten, blood pressure rises, breath quickens and digestion slows. The effects of disrupted digestion is linked to bloating, gas, constipation and loose stools (so those stressing may actually need all that poo paper!!). In addition, stress depletes your body of nutrients, disrupts the gut microbiome and weakens immune system function. This is because 80% of the immune system is located in the gut so reducing stress is vital. NOURISH YOUR BODY Eat a wide variety of nutrient-dense whole-foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables from every colour of the rainbow. Different coloured fruits and vegetables contain different antioxidants and phytonutrients, which provide unique health benefits. Also consume quality sources of protein, legumes, nuts, seeds, beneficial healthy fats (such as salmon, avocado, chia seeds and more), and foods high in fibre, probiotics and prebiotics. Avoid heavily processed foods high in transfats and refined sugars, colours, artificial flavours, preservatives and colours. Also eat foods high in Vitamin C (such as strawberries, kiwi fruit, oranges, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet potato and others). Vitamin C is necessary for the growth, development and repair of all body tissues. Its involved in many body functions and is an essential nutrient for healthy immune system response. Other nutrients also vital for immune system function are zinc and Vitamin D. I will write a separate post on the benefits of these nutrients. There are so many other practical things to do such as Wash your hands with warm soapy water for at least 20 seconds or use an anti-bacterial hand sanitiser Avoid touching your mouth, eyes and mouth Cover your mouth when you cough and dont cough on others Stay home if you are feeling unwell (sore throat, temperature, aches and pains) Avoid touching stair rails and escalators Get some fresh air! I know that people who are immune-compromised may prefer to stay indoors and avoid contact with others, but safely sit outside if you can and get some fresh air and sunlight. Last of all Choose FACTS over FEAR There is so much media hype so stay educated, informed and get your information from RELIABLE sources. Im not downplaying the situation, as we honestly dont know what to expect, plus I have family and friends who are immune-compromised (including myself), but being sensible and prepared is very different from being stressed. Instead, boost your immune system. Rose ~ Clinical Nutritionist The Nourished Network
