25.01.2022 Heuristic play is the exploration of real life objects - using the familiar in perhaps unfamiliar ways through open ended discovery. When people ask me about play ideas for babies I always start with heuristic play. Often the first step in that for younger babies is the introduction of a treasure basket.collections of real life objects with varying shapes, sizes and textures as a way to encourage exploration and expression. Treasure baskets are wonderful resources from the po...int of view that they are quick and easy to set up, you can use things from around your own home, so they are very cost effective and they can be continually changed to allow exploration of new objects over time. Treasure baskets are best introduced for short, supervised periods once a day so that the child might be free of distraction and able to investigate and experiment with the items at their own pace. As babies handle, mouth and create with these objects they are using all of their senses to explore, developing fine motor skills and learning about choice. They are also developing concentration skills, independent play skills and being introduced to weight, size and shape concepts through play. Items included in a treasure basket need to be large enough to not pose a choking risk and free of sharp edges to allow for the fact that babies will more than likely mouth them. Some of our favourite treasure basket items have been silk scarves or fabric pieces, whisks, wooden spoons, egg cups, large pebbles, pine cones, wooden rings, pastry brushes, coasters, dessert spoons, honey dippers, balls, wicker balls, sponges, small jars, shells, feathers, scoops, bells, funnels and cardboard rolls. Have you used a treasure basket before? What are your favourite inclusions?

25.01.2022 While documentation in education and care services is important, it must be balanced with meaningful time with children. Amanda Wilson’s article ‘Find the time for meaningful documentation’ on Early Childhood Australia’s The Spoke offers an opinion.

23.01.2022 'Your wellbeing matters because, as an educator, it influences your interactions and relationships with children and young people. It also affects your ability to respond to challenging situations.'

22.01.2022 Sound Riddles, is another Reggio Children 'At home with the Reggio Approach' idea we thought you might enjoy exploring. There are 12 sound riddles to explore ...because as Caterina, a girl aged 5 years 4 months says, 'sometimes sounds seem to be one thing but [really] they’re something else.' We hope you have fun listening to these riddles together with children, trying to guess what produced them and imagining what else they could be. Let your imagination run away with you even though we’re cooped up at home perhaps we’ll feel like we’re somewhere else. https://www.reggiochildren.it//athomewithth/sound-riddles/

22.01.2022 ‘Children’s Right to a Fair and Just Curriculum’ by Dr. Deborah Harcourt, a free article from Pedagogy+ Magazine, examines how educators can uphold both the UNCRC and a strong image of the child in all that we do. https://bit.ly/2pmw87m

21.01.2022 When I was a baby, I had these hairs. Once a child’s sense of self is established,it creates a self-reference effect. This effect can be helpful as children learn and process information. Feelings of self worth can influence a child’s approach to social and academic situations. Children with positive perceptions of themselves have the best social and academic outcomes.

20.01.2022 When a person logs on to the online world where do they go, what do they see and what do they do? Is there a Piazza for them to meet and exchange ideas on children, on teaching or about the world?

20.01.2022 Share StartingBlocks.gov.au's factsheet with your families to help them understand how play supports their child’s development and learning https://bit.ly/2NpYFm0

20.01.2022 "Pedagogy is everything that you see, that you hear, that you learn and that you think. It is everything you discuss and unpack with your team members."

18.01.2022 Art happens anywhere and at anytime! We don't have a set time or a set place for creation and imagination, it unfolds around us! I provide time, space, opportunity and materials and the children take it from there.

16.01.2022 There are hundreds of different images of the child. Each one of you has inside yourself an image of the child that directs you as you begin to relate to a child. This theory within you pushes you to behave in certain ways; it orients you as you talk to the child, listen to the child, observe the child. It is very difficult for you to act contrary to this internal image Loris Malaguzzi

16.01.2022 Do you aspire for your learning environment to have a "homelike" feeling? How do we transform our spaces to foster bringing people together & create ‘feeling’ in our programs? Here are some great suggestions to help you achieve this

16.01.2022 For many, art in a classroom is seen as a finished product made of paint, clay, or collage materials, but for others, art refers to spontaneous, open-ended, and... often messy explorations with little to no direction from the teacher. Take a look at what art looks like at The Compass School!

15.01.2022 Full Body Explorations With Clay Clay is an inviting, adaptable and expressive sensory/ creative medium. It empowers children to think, question, investigate, and explore at their own pace. It’s one of the 'Hundred Languages' of children, with countless therapeutic qualities that benefit both children and adults. Before working with a new art medium, it’s important to invite children to explore its properties and characteristics. During this phase, the children should be enc...ouraged to engage with their arms, hands, legs and feet. Throughout this process, children began to poke, pound, pinch, roll, and tear the clay into smaller pieces. They discovered that clay becomes smoother and malleable. The explorations will continue... As children bring their whole body to the experience of clay, they experience the responsiveness of the clay. This first encounter, body to body, begins the dialogue between children and clay (Pelo, 2007)

07.01.2022 "The wonder of the Reggio Emilia Educational Project lies in its power to transform and in its belief in transformation as inextricable to teaching and learning......."- a quote from Stefania Giamminuti from Dancing with Reggio Emilia available from our bookstore. https://reggioaustralia.org.au//dancing-with-reggio-emilia/

04.01.2022 Documentation is not pretty pictures of engaged children. Rather, it captures the thinking process: What motivated [students] to begin, continue, change direction? What were the breakthroughs, the pivotal remarks or actions? How did they solve the problem? The goal is to enable whoever reads a panel to understand what the child attempted and how they went about it, to see stimulus, process, and outcome. -A. Lewin-Benham
