20.01.2022 NATIONAL EAT YOUR VEGETABLES DAY June 17 National Eat Your Vegetables Day falls in the middle of National Fresh Fruit and Vegetables Month. The Little Gumboots children celebrated by taste testing a delicious vegetable rainbow. There were many funny faces and alot of courage shown by the children as they made their own choice to taste test some new and familiar vegetables. Providing these healthy eating experiences will help the children to become strong in their heal...th and wellbeing. Vegetables are an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. As part of the main meal or as a snack, vegetables can be enjoyed in a variety of ways. Of course, each vegetable has its own nutritional content. Generally, they contain a little protein or fat and varying proportions of vitamins such as Vitamin A, Vitamin K and Vitamin B6, provitamins, dietary minerals, and carbohydrates. Interestingly, they also contain a variety of other phytochemicals, some of which have antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and anticarcinogenic properties. In addition, many vegetables also contain fiber, which is important for gastrointestinal function. Another benefit is the essential nutrients that vegetables contain that are necessary for healthy hair and skin.

13.01.2022 A glimpse of a few sensory experiences at Little Gumboots this week Research shows that sensory play builds nerve connections in the brain's pathways, which lead to the child's ability to complete more complex learning tasks. Sensory play supports language development, cognitive growth, fine and gross motor skills, problem solving skills, and social interaction.

13.01.2022 HANDWASHING SONG We are currently updating our centre policies during this process we encourage input from families, educators and children of the centre. The most recent and very important policy we reviewed was our Handwashing Policy. The educators decided on a new handwashing song for our policy. Hand washing is one of the most important ways to prevent the spread of germs in child care. When washing hands, it is important to scrub for a full 20 seconds. Many children forget to wash their hands for this long. Teaching children in a child care setting to sing a hand washing song while they wash is a good way to help them measure if they have been scrubbing long enough. We have been teaching the children our new song for about 3 weeks. Check out Amelia singing all the words and doing the actions in this video!!

12.01.2022 The children at Little Gumboots ELC have a strong sense of wellbeing! They have been practicing their independence skills with sun safety, hygiene and feeding themselves. Children’s developing resilience and their ability to take increasing responsibility for self-help and basic health routines promote a sense of independence and confidence. As children become more independent they can take greater responsibility for their health, hygiene and personal care and become mindful of their own and others’ safety.

05.01.2022 COMING OF THE LIGHT FESTIVAL This week was the coming of light festival for the Torres strait Islander people. In recognition of this the Koala's focused on Torres Strait Island based activities, these included singing taba naba during group time and sensory activities involving the colours of the TSI flag. Our main focus activity was collaging and painting our very own Torres strait island head dresses, also known as a Dhari. The children stayed interested in this activity f...or an extended period of time, they each used the TSI colours blue, green white and black and placed white feathers on. This not only promoted cultural diversity within the nursery room, but it was also a good opportunity to encourage respectful and responsive relationships with others. EYLF Principle 4. 01.01.2022 Outdoor play improves physical development Physical skills are important for growth, physical coordination and the movement of the body. When children play outdoors they increase their ability to balance, jump, climb, throw, run and skip. Physical activity and attention to fine and gross motor skills provide children with the foundations for their growing independence and satisfaction in being able to do things for themselves.
