23.01.2022 In honour of the International Day of the Girl Child, here's a list of bilingual books full of fabulous heroines from my heroes the fantastic team at A Mighty Girl https://www.amightygirl.com/blog?p=16185 and my very own bilingual mighty girl- I am so proud of you!

20.01.2022 I recently suffered a head injury and afterwards experienced some short-term common symptoms of post-concussion. Amongst these were some aphasia-like symptoms, i.e. not being able to find my words easily. Happily for me, this resolved quickly in my case. I have been thinking about what role my bilingualism might play in the recovery from this and thought it would be interesting to post something about the effects of real aphasia on a bilingual brain, where often one of the subject's languages is seriously impaired, and not always their second language.

14.01.2022 It's always fun to watch someone working their languages!

07.01.2022 I've been working with quite a few families lately all experiencing this issue. There are many reasons why speaking to your child in your home language can be difficult at times and this article helps us to remember why language shaming is not ok, no matter which language it is and how you may feel about it. Raising bilingual children is a tough job, let's all get behind it!

05.01.2022 As I work today I'm listening along to this gorgeous trilingual song in English, French and Austrian German by the wonderful and talented Melanie. Remember Melanie Safka?

05.01.2022 You have to love Eddie Izzard! Bring along your schoolboy French for a good giggle and the wonder of where bilingualism can take you...

03.01.2022 Yes, I've been stalking my children again... but it's all in the name of science!

02.01.2022 I have always believed in the power of story-telling. There is a reason that story-telling is human kind’s most ancient way of passing on knowledge and information, advice and guidance, culture, morals, beliefs and faith, all the big questions man has grappled with since he first had a mind. Stories speak to us in a way that lessons, lectures and textbooks cannot. [ 2,003 more words ] http://littlebilinguals.net/2017/09/05/family-profile-18/

02.01.2022 Today’s thoughts come to you from Bali, Indonesia! I’m here travelling for two weeks and I’m thrilled to be here. There’s nothing quite like travelling to open the spirit, dust out all those cobwebs, shake up any sleepy comfortable little ways of thinking or being that have been slumbering undeservedly and just generally give yourself a good spritzing! I have to say as well what a pleasure it is to find myself once more in a true melting pot of a hundred different cultures an...d, my favourite, languages. A real mecca for tourists, the sheer variety of visitors here would make anyone’s head spin. The diversity is never more apparent than at breakfast, when everyone’s personal tastes and cultural identities come into full force. First thing in the morning, what is the first thing your palate craves to greet the day? At the tables around me people are ordering onion omelettes with fresh chopped chillies, mounds of steaming spicy noodles and egg covered in sticky soy sauce, demure toast and jam, tropical fruit salad laced with honey, sticky sweet pancakes, black rice porridge with coconut milk, fried rice, nothing but black coffee... I love listening to all the languages chattering around me over the breakfast plates: German, French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Italian, Japanese, English in multiple accents. I speak enough of most of these languages to be able to follow the broad outline of some of these conversations. All these people are travellers. Their conversations revolve around where they have been and where they are going next. It is so refreshing and so NORMAL to feel overtly that my way of seeing the world is only ONE way amidst THOUSANDS of ways, all good, rich, interesting, cherished and profound. This is something we must try and find in our every day, even in our sleepy comfortable little routines, to remember the wealth of difference only a handshake away from us at any given point, and how good it is! Rahajeng peteng and good night from Bali! See more

01.01.2022 A quick little pictogram about what I've been banging on about in my wordy way...

01.01.2022 Somebody else's experience of the real-life impact of bilingualism in practice and thinking outside the box!
