23.01.2022 Ok we’ve been eating beetroot every day for over a month now... Maddie finally decided to try a bite last night This is your reminder not to take something off the plate even if your little one rejects it. My strategy was to try it lots of different ways... She helped me choose the beetroot at the market each week She packed it in the fridge She helped me prepare it And she put a tiny bit on her plate each night with absolutely no encouragement to eat it (this part is probably the most important!) 23.01.2022 Food is always more desirable when it’s off YOUR plate right?

22.01.2022 Getting your little one involved in food prep is one of the easiest ways to familiarise them with foods. The aim isn’t to get them to eat. Eating is such a small part of the experience. So how else does this help: gets them excited about food... builds their skills in the kitchen shows them that hunger and eating is only a small part of the food experience and that mealtimes can be fun and social introduces them to foods without the pressure of having to try them gives them a level of control and autonomy with their food which is important for becoming an independent eater One of our favourite things to make together is pizza! I make the bases myself and they are always fun to knead and roll out and then Maddie gets full control over what goes on her pizza. I provide the toppings and she gets to decide what goes on. There’s a 50/50 chance she will eat the pizza once it’s cooked- but eating isn’t the point!

19.01.2022 Do you know why calcium intake in children is so critical? When we think about osteoporosis we tend to think about older people as over 60% of women and 30% of men will suffer an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime. BUT did you know that osteoporosis has its roots in childhood. ... It has been estimated that a 10% increase in bone mass may delay the development of osteoporosis by about 13 years? Calcium and dynamic weight bearing exercise are 2 of the most well researched ways that we know of to increase bone mass in children. See below a few ideas on foods that you can incorporate! They don't need to be dairy based - but we do need to make sure we are getting enough calcium.

17.01.2022 Can you recommend any books you have come across that help to generate food discussions with your little one? I’m building up my library of loan books for my clients and am always on the hunt for new ones!

17.01.2022 The next intro to solids course is THIS Friday on zoom if you want to join. https://events.humanitix.com/introduction-to-solids-with-nu

16.01.2022 Looking for some nutritious snacks for both you and your little one? Trying to avoid raiding the cupboard from COVID induced boredom? Check out some of my favourite snack options here: https://lifespannutrition.com.au/snack-time-heres-a-list-o/

16.01.2022 I start all my introduction to solids sessions by explaining that if you want your child to eat something you need to put it in front of them. It took 32 times of offering before Maddie put egg in her mouth... It took another 20 times before she swallowed any...... I can count on my hands the number of time’s she has eaten egg in the last 4 years... But I never stopped offering. Tonight she asked to have eggs for dinner and she’s almost 5 (yes we are having a picnic on the floor ) Don’t stop offering foods your little one doesn’t eat, it’s the easiest way to ensure they never eat them again.

16.01.2022 How many servings of vegetables should we be offering our little ones? 2-3 servings for children aged 1-2 2 servings for children aged 23 4 servings for children aged 48... 5 servings for children aged 911 5 servings for females aged 1218 5 servings for males aged 1218 Remember that this is the minimum number that we are OFFERING. Your job is to PROVIDE and theirs is to DECIDE. This is how we teach our children to become mindful eaters. If you are worried about your little ones intake please feel free to get in touch.

15.01.2022 Often as parents the slow cooker can become our best friend. I love nothing better than to put dinner on in the morning and not have to worry about it for the rest of the day. But many slow cooker recipes are packed with salt and sugar laden sauces so may not be appropriate for our little ones. Check out my slow cooked brisket in the video below which is a favourite in our house!

13.01.2022 Did you see the new dairy free up and go? It's soy based which is a little disappointing for me (I'm high risk of anaphylaxis to dairy AND soy ) but a great option for those who can have soy.

11.01.2022 We were talking about condiments like tomato sauce over on the BLW Australia page and this recipe came up. This would be a great sauce for spag bol in my opinion and also couldn’t resist sharing a Jamie Oliver recipe Packed with veggies! ... https://www.jamieoliver.com//past/seven-veg-tomato-sauce/

10.01.2022 What was your little ones first food and how old were they? Maddie's first food was a strip of scotch fillet steak, a baked potato wedge, and a steamed carrot stick. She was 5 months and 3 weeks old and in hindsight I should have waited another week.

09.01.2022 I don't run weekend seminars very often so if you want a weekend session then this is your chance! https://events.humanitix.com/live-webinar-introduction-to-s

08.01.2022 Happy world egg day! Pancakes are a great way to serve eggs to our little ones - check out the below recipe for inspiration! Did you know just one serve of eggs contains 82% of your recommended daily vitamin D intake?... As a source of high quality protein and 11 essential vitamins and minerals eggs are a great addition to your diet. Eggs contain minerals that may help boost the sleep hormone serotonin.

08.01.2022 For those introducing solids has your little one got their pincer grip yet? The pincer grip generally appears between 8-10 months and is a development of your little ones fine motor skills. We can help them to hone these skills by offering them smaller items to pic up and eat. Beans were one of our favourite ways of doing this and are still a winner in our house. ... Check out my baked beans recipe for a nice low salt, delicious way of offering beans to your little one. This is also a great recipe for adults as well! https://lifespannutrition.com.au/homemade-baked-beans/

07.01.2022 Just another reason to be mindful of our sodium/salt intake.

06.01.2022 How much fruit should we be offering as a minimum to our little ones each day? 1/2 serving for children aged 1-2 1 serving for children aged 23 1 servings for children aged 48... 2 servings for people aged 918. Remember that our job is to PROVIDE the recommended number of servings and theirs is to DECIDE whether to eat it. This week I have worked with a few clients on strategies on how to offer their little ones a well balanced diet.

05.01.2022 That time Maddie took bites out of all the apples at least she used to put them back in the fruit bowl. Now I just find half eaten apples in weird places....

05.01.2022 New blog post is up! This one is on constipation and gut health!! https://lifespannutrition.com.au/is-constipation-a-food-is/

04.01.2022 I was so excited to come across this product recently. Salt is something we want to be careful of with out little ones (no matter what their age) and so having a 'mite' option which is low salt and also allergen friendly can be a lifesaver.

03.01.2022 There’s still time to join me for today’s zoom webinar on intro to solids! Learn about all the different methods of introducing solids & what you expect at each stage First aid for choking and allergies How to avoid fussiness ... - And more....... The session is interactive and you can have your little one with you. 12:30 2:30pm (AEST), $35pp Book here: https://events.humanitix.com/live-webinar-introduction-to-s

03.01.2022 Some light lockdown reading Did you know that obesity and overweight emerge as early as 6 months old? And the most effective prevention is a healthy home environment?... My role as a nutritionist means that I need to stay on top of the current evidence based practices and actively read the research (not just media headlines). I do all of this so that you don’t have to!! Plus I find it really interesting

03.01.2022 I love this message

02.01.2022 I always emphasise how important it is to get children involved in food prep. It empowers them with skills and also exposes them to foods. Food prep is a great way to expose them to the foods that they sometimes don't like to eat. The texture, look, and smell will go a long way to future meal acceptance. Preparing the food can remove the anxiety of wondering if they are going to be pressured to try it and can be a fun and exciting way of engaging them.

01.01.2022 I love this! A great experience for you and your little one!

01.01.2022 Who is on insta? Feel free to jump over and check out my feed

01.01.2022 If you have ever worried about where your child sits on a growth chart this is a great read. Some of the key points: - We don't want our little ones to move up or down percentiles. We aim for them to track along at the SAME percentile. If they jump or drop percentiles then this is a concern that needs investigating. ... - Fast growth is as much of a concern as slow growth - "It’s important we feed children in a way that lets them stop eating when they are full, rather than teaching them to ignore their body’s signals, or eat for reasons other than hunger." - "The most recent Infant feeding guidelines Information for Health Workers published in 2012, says very little about early growth and obesity. If and when this information is incorporated into the guidelines, there is no comprehensive method of informing practitioners what has changed, and no way of measuring whether guidelines are implemented." https://theconversation.com/our-obsession-with-infant-growt

01.01.2022 Hi all! If you are Melbourne based I totally feel all the feelings right now right there with you
