09.01.2022 [MICE 2018] Thoughts on Coffee Expo 2018 The Melbourne International Coffee Expo was held last weekend and for the pure coffee fanatic - it was a feast for the ...senses. Here's some takeaways: Trends: Technology: Coffee machines are getting fancier and fancier. The new technology was breathtaking and almost all of the new machinery was designed to give more control and quality information to the barista POS upgrades: Point of sale just keeps getting better and better. And there are countless options. This stuff is good and all based around SAAS and is stored in the cloud. There's some good internet redundancy built in to the software now. This was a major issue just a few years ago. Barista's out of a job? With the new technology and a lot of automation creating in - is this the beginning of the end for the standard barista? Brands getting stronger: With the likes of St Ali et al making big gains in market share the strong brands (who are marketed well) are going from strength to strength. More supplier options: The international flavour of the event saw a lot of offshore suppliers; there's oatmilk from the UK, (delicious) Almond Milk from the USA, beans from every country you can think of and machines from China to Italy. Even socks from New Zealand...(!) Best part: The international flavour of the event and everyone had a passion for great coffee 'Bit that needs to be looked at': I was quite surprised that there were no business service providers at the expo and nothing focussed around building a business during the show. There were no Q&A's on profitability, talks on staff management or anything of the sort. As far as could be told The Cafe Doctor was the only business there that was a business growth service... weird
