18.01.2022 Change to Business Operation Due to the changing conditions in the tourism industry, Little Desert Nature Lodge is still welcoming guests not affected by the current Melbourne Lockdown. As a safety measure not only for our staff and local community all guests are required to complete our online booking form. The online booking form has a short COVID questionnaire to ensure that we are keeping in line with government directives and ensure our local community stays safe! A...s our booking numbers are unfortunately down, there will be some changes to our operations to ensure that our business can remain open and in good health. The following changes are effective as of Monday 13 July 2020 until further notice. The Lodge Café Open by appointment only. Please arrange a date and time prior if you would like to come out for a coffee or a walk on the grounds. In-line with current restrictions, we are able to seat 20 patrons. We are more than happy to do lunches and evening meals for groups of more than 10 patrons with a maximum of 20 patrons by appointment. Office hours Available to complete guest check-ins or by appointment. We will be monitoring emails remotely and return/take phone calls when possible. We understand that this has been a challenging time for many businesses but with community support and continued measure to keep everyone safe we can all get through this together!

14.01.2022 Bustling Bettongs Have you ever heard of or seen a Bettong? Many of our guests who explore the walking tracks on The Lodge grounds often come across a big electric fenced off area. Many peer in trying to see what is being kept behind the vermin proof fence, but are puzzled when they cannot see anything. ... In this enclosure, we have a number of Brush-tail Bettongs, also known as woylie or a brush-tailed rat kangaroo. The brush-tailed bettong is an extremely rare, small nocturnal marsupial who is endangered due to feral cats and foxes. When guest join us for a nocturnal walk and animal feeding, they get to see the Brush-tail Bettongs bustling around with excitement as they know dinner is on its way. When entering the gate, guest will see one Bettong that looks quite different from the others. This special, and very cheeky Rufous Bettong is named Snowy. Brush-tail Bettongs are on the endangered species list and we are fortunate enough to have a small population which assist us in educating and sharing a unique experience with guests and visitors.

11.01.2022 Thank you Since we took on management at the Lodge, we have been fortunate to affiliate with local businesses who donate some food on a regular basis towards the feeding of the Brushtail Bettong and Bushstone Curlew. We would like to sincerely thank Rocky Lamattina & Sons PL, Blue Lake Milling Dimboola, Luv A Duck and Nhill IGA. Through their generous donations we have been able to ensure that our Bettong family has been fed well. ... Rocky Lamattina & Sons are in Wemen Victoria and has some farmland in Kaniva Victoria from where we pick up carrots. Bordertown’s Blue Lake Milling Dimboola depot located in Victoria from where we pick up rolled oats. Luv A Duck hatchery located in Nhill who drop off some eggs. Nhill IGA from where we pick up slightly damaged apples, pears, bananas, sweet potato, cauliflower, broccoli, mushrooms and cheese when available. This generosity has certainly helped us out, especially during this Covid period. We would also like to sincerely thank those visitors that contributed by going on the nightly animal feeding over the past year. These monies have been spent on raisins, eggs, kangaroo pellets, corn, kibble, chaff, frozen broccoli and cauliflower, meatloaf, meal worms and mice for the curlews and most importantly materials for the maintenance of the enclosure to keep it vermin proof. With the help from these businesses and visitors we can ensure that we contribute to the conservation of this critically endangered species. 07.01.2022 Mallee Fowl Mound Watch Over the last few months, we have regularly spotted Mallee Fowl at Little Desert Nature Lodge. More recently we were able to check out a mound on the property. We were thrilled to see that there has been some activity! During this time of year Mallee Fowl pairs are working on the incubation layer of the mound (autumn to spring). Mallee Fowl have a rich history at The Lodge and are quiet often one of the reasons that guests and keen birdwatchers co...me to visit! Over the last year we have learned a lot about all the animals that reside at The Lodge. Many people know George the resident emu, but he is not the only amazing animal on the property. 05.01.2022 Mallee Fowl Mound Watch Given the activity around the mound, we were lucky enough to spot this Mallee Fowl close by. We suspect that he may have been on his way back to the mound to continue preparations for the upcoming laying season. Stay tuned for more updates!
