23.01.2022 Communicating with Toddlers... Someone may as well of slapped me in the face when I read this. This was my light bulb moment that really made me understand, that it’s me. Ever since, I have really been trying different ways of communicating with my 2 year old. I definitely feel there have been improvements. I have really had to try to rephrase things so I’m not saying, ‘No’, 1000 times a day. Somedays communicating with kids can be hard, right? ... 10.01.2022 Creating Independence... For those of you who don’t already know, I have a daughter (4) and a son (2). My son, is Mr. Independent. He likes to give things a go without assistance or direction, which often ends with a mess or something broken. My daughter struggles to give some simple things a go even though she is more than capable of doing them and gets discouraged very easily. It can be really hard to find a balance between the two. When I went back to SAHM life last year,... going back to constantly needing to do tasks for both kids simultaneously was mentally a struggle for me. So I started laying out my daughters clothes on the bed for her in the morning. So while I empty the dishwasher & get breakfast ready, she has to change out of her pjs. It has been life changing. So I now do it for my son as well. He obviously needs more help than my daughter but it satisfies his need to give things a go by himself, It helps my daughter feel accomplished and confident, and It teaches them to ask for help if they need it. Sometimes, they even help each other. It also gives me 5 minutes in the morning to breathe a bit more. Overtime I have noticed small positive changes to the way they approach the little things. Something else that has worked well for us, is having food (normally fruit) readily accessible for them to eat in the fridge. I’ve taught my daughter how to make a sandwich on her own, which some days she will happily try, other days she won’t. Which is fine- Progress not perfection. What little things do you let your kids do by themselves, that gives them that little bit more independence? 05.01.2022 Different Ways Of Learning... The past few days I have been showing different ways you can play and learn with Animal figurines. Animals are fascinating! There are so many of them, with different features, different sounds, and they all live differently. There is also more than one way to learn about them. ... Inspired by @whatmaggieplays, and what she mentioned on her stories today. I wanted to emphasise that there are so many wonderful resources out there. There are books, puzzles, drawing/painting, flash cards, music, museums, just being outside,etc. Use them all, use none. Just always use whatever best suits your child. Sometimes, it does take a little bit of trial and error to find out what works and that’s okay. Exposing our children to new ways of learning is good for them but never be disappointed if it is not for them. Take whatever approach to learning and play, that they enjoy. It will be so much more valuable to them in the end. Aswell as animal figurines, my kids love reading books about animals and of course seeing the real thing. Flash cards also work for us. Haven’t really done anything crafty associated with animals. To be honest, anything with paint, glue or glitter, I tend to avoid. I like to keep it simple (easy setup & clean up)at home and I know the kids do that sort of things at daycare. 04.01.2022 The past couple of weeks, my daughter has been enjoying these pieces from the @littleearthtoys range. Ive found the new colour ranges have really extended our play. We can play matching games and make pictures& patterns. Loose parts play is something my daughter enjoys the most. She loves positioning things to see what she can create but she also loves pretend play. A lot of her pretend play lately has been based around kindy. All the mini leaves say goodbye to their mummy &... daddy leaves, as they get dropped off to kindy and then they have to sit in a circle, etc. Some of the mini leaves also get upset when their parents drop them off and she comforts them. It is really sweet! Pretend play does help kids make sense of certain social situations. It also helps develop language skills. Do your kids like pretend play? 03.01.2022 What I learnt in 2020... I had known for a while, and I was kinda working on it but I realised I wasn’t living my best life. It was just so hectic. My days off were cleaning and catching up on house things. I was there for my kids but I wasn’t really present. The weeks were flying by and I felt like I wasn’t spending anytime playing with the kids or doing anything for myself. I wasn’t modelling to them what I wanted. I want my kids to know that life should be enjoyed and that... I was there to enjoy it with them. This is also part of the reason why play is so important to me. I want the toys that we stock to make it easier and more inviting, to sit and have fun playing with your kids. My life has slowed down since then (thankfully) and I’m enjoying life more. I still have my moments where I get caught up analysing things and that need to get things done but I’m working on it. One of my goals this year is to laugh more. We’ll see how it goes.
