25.01.2022 Can anyone spot our new friend in the waiting room?

24.01.2022 Were often asked whether raising a child as bilingual or multilingual can cause language delay, and the short answer is... NO! In fact, teaching a child a second language is a gift and can actually be beneficial for their language development. Children learning more than one language at the same time (i.e. simultaneous acquisition) will go through the same developmental milestones in both languages, and roughly at the same time as children learning one language. Some chi...ldren who learn a second language after being exposed to their first language (i.e. sequential language learners), MAY go through a silent period in their second language. Learning a new language is hard work, and they need time to process this information... its important to note the silent period is temporary and does not happen to all sequential language learners. Swipe to see different ways you can raise your child to be bilingual! Is your family bilingual or multilingual? What method/s have worked for you? Thank you to @raisinglittletalkers and @speechsisters for the awesome visuals!

17.01.2022 Nearly a week into online sessions and so far, so good We have been asked if online is as good as in person. Speech Pathology Australia have a 38 page document on their position, but in a nutshell, '...the Association supports the use of telepractice as a service delivery model where it is based on current evidence-based practice and is at least equivalent to standard clinical care.' We are so happy to be able to offer speech therapy sessions during this strange time. Give us a call if youd like to chat about online sessions for your child

17.01.2022 How many words should my child be saying at XX months? Once children start using words, they typically learn new vocabulary at an astounding rate! The number on the left is what we’d expect 90% of children to have, and the figure on right is an average (50%) for that age. Be mindful that these numbers are a guideline, and if you’re at all concerned, please get in touch with a speech pathologist! See here for more info! https://teachmetotalk.com//number-of-words-in-a-ch...ilds-vo/ @raisinglittletalkers

17.01.2022 We are closed today for the GC Show Holiday! Wishing all our families a happy and safe long weekend We look forward to seeing you again on Monday!

17.01.2022 Check out these brilliant ideas to keep the kids (and adults!) busy and creative over the Easter holidays How many can you make using bits and pieces from around the house?

16.01.2022 A speech pathologist can help to identify the red flags for dyslexia at various ages. From early years to school-aged children... these are some of the signs we look out for If your child is showing some of these signs, it does NOT necessarily mean a dyslexia diagnosis! To reach a diagnosis, an educational psychologist analyses results from various assessments before determining the reason for a child’s learning difficulty. Research has shown that children with speec...h and language difficulties are at a higher risk for literacy difficulties, compared to children who have have no history of impairment. A speech pathologist can provide literacy intervention to any child with difficulties reading, writing and spelling. We love helping little ones become confident readers and spellers! @literacyexpanded

15.01.2022 The Spalding Method, taught in the Writing Road to Reading program, is a comprehensive approach for teaching spelling, reading and writing. Children spell a word by writing its sounds, and reading aloud their own writing (hence the name!). 5 ‘The Big 5’ are evidence-based components necessary to teach children to read. These include phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension - the Spalding Method integrates all these components to help children develop their literacy skills. All our speech pathologists at Little Language are trained to deliver the Spalding Method. If you have concerns with your child’s literacy skills, please contact us to learn more about how we can help!

15.01.2022 Just a little bit of fun! Heres to all the types of mums...

15.01.2022 Articulation therapy is the approach we use to teach a child new speech sounds. We work on the specific placement of articulators, like the tongue or lips, to correctly produce the target sound. To master these sounds, we follow a speech hierarchy where we start by teaching the sound in isolation, and gradually work our way up to generalising the sound into everyday speech. Think of it as learning to ride a bike... you wouldnt expect a child to go from sitting on a bike ...to being able to ride without training wheels in a day. Articulation therapy is a process and requires lots of hard work and practice before we can expect children to use a new sound confidently in conversation! 15.01.2022 Speechies just play with kids in therapy. We hear this often. But its not just play - play is childrens occupation. Play is where the magic of brain development happens Children want and need play to engage and learn. So yes, we play with kids in therapy - but always with very clear goals and use of honed techniques. And not only is it fun, it works!

14.01.2022 Zooming into a new week with the Little Language team

The Little Language team would like to wish all our wonderful families a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

13.01.2022 We had a furry visitor at the clinic today

13.01.2022 When is the right time to start working on a child’s articulation errors? Children with language delays often have articulation (speech) errors, which makes it even harder to understand what they’re trying to say! Some toddlers with language delays need to become more competent at learning to talk, before they’re ready to work on HOW to talk. Typically developing toddlers can also be tricky to understand, especially as their speech is maturing! As a general guideline, yo...u should be able to understand 75-100% of your child’s speech by the time they’re 36 months. These are some other areas we look at before determining readiness for articulation therapy in little ones! Thanks to teachmetotalk.com for this great handout! You can print your own free copy here: https://teachmetotalk.com//uploads/HANDOUTS/374-Handout.pdf

11.01.2022 The Griffith University Social Work Clinic is up and running Social workers can assist when a persons health is impacted by complex social, psychological, family and environmental factors

11.01.2022 Language modeling should be used with any child - not just those with a language delay! In simple terms, modeling is using the words and sentences you want your child to develop, rather than correcting, instructing or asking questions. For example, many parents will point to a ball and instinctively ask, What is this?. However, your child will develop language more effectively if you simple model it by saying, Thats a ball! Its important to understand the differe...nt types of language modeling to help your child with their language and speech development. Which type/s of modeling have you used? Thanks to The SLT Scrapbook for the great summary!

10.01.2022 Wait and see could be a mistake! Late language development in toddlers (18 - 30 months) can be associated with long-term learning, academic, social and behavioural issues. Parents, we know there is conflicting info about speech and language development out there. But... GPs, paediatricians, friends and family are not specialists in this area - speech and language pathologists are! Sure, Little Johnny might have been late to talk and is now okay without intervention..., but he is likely to be the exception. If youre concerned, call a speech and language specialist. A chat or assessment will give you peace of mind that all is on track or give you a plan for early intervention. Please dont wait and see, you could lose precious time during your childs critical learning phase.

07.01.2022 October is World Dyslexia Awareness month! We will be spending the new few weeks talking about all things dyslexia and literacy to raise awareness What is dyslexia? Firstly, dyslexia is NOT a disease or a reflection of one’s intelligence! Dyslexia means difficulty with words, and it affects someone’s ability to read and spell, despite having a desire to learn. Dyslexia can have an impact on both children and adults, and the presenting symptoms differ with age http...s://www.mayoclinic.org//d/symptoms-causes/syc-20353552 How is dyslexia diagnosed? To reach a diagnosis, comprehensive assessment by an educational psychologist is required. A psychologist may then refer on to other allied health (e.g. speech pathology or occupational therapy) as needed. As speech pathologists, we can help to identify the signs and provide literacy intervention... often before a formal diagnosis is reached! With intervention and educational support, children with dyslexia CAN succeed in school! If you have any concerns for your child, please give us a call to discuss how we can help you. @smilesforspeech #SucceedwithDyslexia

06.01.2022 Celebrating making it to the end of this weird year with our awesome Little Language team

06.01.2022 Joint attention is a vital pre-linguistic skill that children need to acquire before learning to use words. This skill allows a child to shift their attention between something theyre paying attention to, and to share that experience with someone else. It typically develops around 12 months of age, and it is so crucial for language development! Being able to engage with another person for sustained interactions provides opportunities for the child to listen and to learn... language. We are always using these awesome tips to help develop joint attention with our little ones! Thanks to @thesltscrapbook for the great summary! Do you have any other tips that have worked well? Let us know in the comments!

06.01.2022 Don’t say, SAY _____! It’s a hard habit to break, and something most parents will do! We want to encourage language in a different way - using SAY this or SAY that places pressure on the child, and when put on the spot like that, they’ll sometimes say nothing at all. Instead, try to repeat the target word in different ways and provide opportunities for your child to listen and respond. Take it slow, and don’t rush! For example, if your child wants to play with bub...bles, try saying, More bubbles! Blow bubbles. Bubbles pop. No more bubbles! Speech Sisters

02.01.2022 When developing early language skills, we want to be targeting vocabulary that is functional and will allow your little one to communicate their needs! Rather than focusing on colours, shapes or counting, try to use plenty of core words, nouns, verbs and descriptors during play time and in your daily routine. Modeling and showing your child the language you want them to develop is critical in stimulating and building on language skills - stay tuned for more about modeli...ng next week! @mommyandmemilestones
