13.01.2022 Have you ever wondered about what to expect and by when for childrens skills in understanding language and talking? Often people turn to the internet to find information about ages and stages for talking and understanding language and are bombarded by information. These posters come from a great source and are reader friendly. They outline the talking and understanding language milestones for children aged 1-5 years. If you have any questions or queries, please contact me,... Id be happy to help out. Thank you Speech Pathology Australia for such a great resource!

13.01.2022 Conversation starters Im always thinking of new conversation starters for kids, especially when I hear the dont know or one word response. A question that we often ask after kids have had a busy day at kindergarten or school is what did you do today? or how was your day? Turn off the tele and shake things up this week trying some of these: What made you laugh today?... Rate your day from 1-10. What was the book about that your teacher read today? If you were a teacher, whats something youd teach? If you were the principle, whats a new rule youd make? What was your least favorite part of the day? Whats something that you learnt that surprised you? Whats the most popular thing to do at lunch time? Where is your favorite place to play? What new words did you learn today? What are you looking forward to tomorrow? Do you have any others that get the conversation flowing with your kids?

12.01.2022 TOP TIPS FOR READING BOOKS WITH YOUR KIDS - 3 This is the final post (for now) about reading books with your kids. I hope you have found something new to try. Check out these ideas..

12.01.2022 Did you know that babies and small children are more prone to ear infections? Its because they have smaller tubes connecting the middle ear to the throat. If your child has experienced recurrent ear infections, they are at an increased risk of speech and language disorder. If your little one is experiencing an ear infection you may notice a wax build up in the ear canal or fluid coming from the ears. They might be pulling at their ears and complaining of pain. They may not turn towards a noise or respond to a question. If you think your little one may have an ear infection, then its best to get it checked out. Book an appointment with the GP for advice as this could prevent speech and language disorder.

11.01.2022 Road Trips I was in the car with a friend and her son this morning playing I Spy and it got me thinking about the car games that I played as a kid. Lets face it; car rides are long especially when you live out in the country! Here are some car games that might make your trip these school holidays feel a little quicker or entertaining: I Spy its a classic but not just for kids who know their letters. Change it up a bit - I spy with my little eye somethingthat st...arts with the /b/ sound that is bigger than a car that is red that is round Silly Stories - Start the story with a sentence, e.g. once upon a time there was a boy the next person adds to the story with another sentence, who lived in a jumping castle and so on. Get a paper map or download a map onto a device to track your journey by marking towns and special interest places off as you go. Take photos of your journey and add them to the map when you get home. Buzz is a counting game where certain numbers are replaced with saying buzz. You can decide that buzz is even numbers or odd numbers, or make it harder by choosing timetables. Scavenger Hunt Bingo set them up for shorter distances, e.g. between Roxby and Pimba. Before you go draw a grid of 9-12 squares, then draw and write the name of what you are looking for in each square. You can make them as simple (e.g. car) or as tricky (e.g. yellow bus) as you like. There are also plenty of already made car bingo sheets about online. Handy tip: print them and put them into a clip lock bag so that they write on the plastic then you can reuse them for another time. What are your favorite car games to play with your kids? Wishing you all a happy and safe holidays!

Its a privilege to be able to unlock childrens communication skills and give them access to the world around them. This picture is an opportunity to introduce myself again and show my face to those who I havent met yet. So, this is me, Liette Schoemaker, your local Speech Pathologist.
