07.01.2022 Victorias cafes, restaurants and pubs are able to open today, with restrictions. What are the rules & how can diners make it easier for their fave venues to make them happy? In short, do what staff request. They have a lot to get their heads around. Dont try to push the rules - hospitality is in the business of pleasing but venues are subject to huuuge fines for breaking the regulations. So, from today (and probably until June 22):... - businesses are allowed to have *up to* 20 people in each area. Many places will have fewer than this due to distancing and density rules. Theres no more than 1 person per 4 sq m (this is an average calculated by measuring the size of each room, and doesnt include staff). And there must be 1.5m between tables. Businesses should have signs at entrances displaying how many people are allowed to dine in. - the numbers include kids and babies. - there are no more than 6 people per table. You may be allowed to book a larger group but they must sit at separate tables and swapping between tables isnt allowed. - walk-ins are allowed though venues may have their own rules. Probably best to check the places social media or give them a buzz. - youll be asked for your first name and phone number to assist with contact tracing, if necessary. This means everyone at the table including kids. Everyone is encouraged to have the COVIDsafe app too - this helps us all. - its table service only. Dont get up to pay, order, get water, ask for menus. Stay seated. Yes, you may use the toilet but respect distancing guidelines. - alcohol can only be served with a meal, not just a snack. Theres discretion in this but basically, were not going out for cocktails, a glass of wine, or a couple of pots. Were going out to eat. Arrive hungry. - if businesses have separate areas eg indoor and outdoor, private rooms, they may be able to count these as separate areas with their own 20 person upper limit. - many places will have their own rules to make the restricted opening work for their business. These may be time limits, bookings only, set menus and minimum spends. These are survival tactics. If they dont suit you, dont go. Find somewhere else with rules you like, or wait a few weeks for restriction to ease up. Trying to push any rules is just going to stress out owners and staff and put businesses at risk. - staff will clean and sanitise A LOT. Be patient and grateful as this occurs. Help everyone by being super strict with your own hand-washing and cough etiquette. Stay home if you have the merest sniffle! - basically, kindness, patience and hand-washing will get us through. Enjoy your meal!
